I have to agree on every point about both these knives. I also use them every day at work and home. The orange one is still my favorite. Mine also has the same two different color handles that started happening after a few weeks of working at my railroad job. I thought it was the grease that did it. But must be just in the coloring they use. The green handle silver blade $5 knife is also a good one with buttery smooth action. My new orange ones arrived in the mail today, my local store sold out immediately. Fun stuff 😀
That's another aspect regarding these knives.....it's just plain fun to get them if you can, and watch the availability. Then when you finally do get it or both variations, just fiddling around with them is akin to a kid with a new toy.
The grin on your face belays your excitement about these knives. My local Walmart doesn’t have the white, $5.00 model as of this time, but I appreciate your heads up call last Thursday night regarding the website availability of the newly released D2 version. I ordered three while we were on the phone and they were delivered on Saturday. They are all you say they are right out of the package, smooth and sharp. What a value at the offered price. Given the quality, I really don’t see how they can sell them at the going prices. Thanks for keeping your viewers in mind when you discover good, useful products. 😊😊
Those Ozark Trail knives are providing a pretty good blade for a very affordable price point. The knife components and the build quality of the knives covered in this video is impressive. For $10 or less these knives are priced for mass purchase at the big box retailer by the common man types. Simply, these particular knives work. They deploy pretty smoothly, they cut, and the slide lock allows the knife to close one handed. Thanks for your review and demonstration of these knives. - Tennessee Smoky
Very good information. If i find some I'll try them out. I like things that work well and are affordable. Thanks again my friend! Keep em coming and good luck with your deer hunting!
Great video… finally someone doing a real world task like skinny a dear… great recommendation on sharpening as well… overall one of the best indepth videos I seen in quite a while !! 👏👏👏
Great look at these knives! They have been all the rage, but I’m not seeing many people actually doing real life use for them! Honestly have several of both knives and never have them the time of day but your review has really peaked my interest in trying them out! Preciate your time and thoughts
Brother, I found you here!😂 I really like this gentleman's channel! He's an outdoorsman...hunts..and loves vintage .22 rifles!!! All in my wheelhouse!!!
Thanks, I went to two local Walmarts and could not find these knives. I checked the website as you mentioned and the new one is on there so I'll place an order. Thanks.
The orange one is better with a true more pronounced drop point blade especially for hog hunters & even deer hunters. The top edge has a more rounded back near the point. This really helps push the guts away from the skin when gutting. Especially helpful on a hog where the front legs are closer to the back legs than on a deer. You might have to gut a hog to understand what I’m trying to say on this.
D2 tool steel is a great mid-grade improved step up from the usual lower cost 440c stainless or such. The high ranking high toughness, high edge retention steels for knives would be CruWear, CPM-3V, or CPM Magnacut but be prepared to pay the money.
Just ordered my second one hopefully it’s the new version, I started watching your video sold out online checked at the end at it was in stock again so I ordered that and the CIVIVI mini praxis so I can meet the $30 for free shipping great video where did you pick up your sharpening tool…? Tractor supply maybe…?
Would like to see a video from someone who is knowledgeable about sharping a knife and actually good at it ive tried for years and for some reason never get an edge that will shave hair or cut paper as smooth as yours did
Freehand or fixed angle? Either way, the vast majority of the time the problem is not fully removing the burr and/or starting at too high of a grit and not removing enough material to form a clean new apex. Or it's taking so long to get a burr that they start rushing and using too much pressure and compromise the new apex. If you're reprofiling or doing a full sharpening of a dull knife you want aggressive cut. 200ish or lower and always minimal pressure and create nice big obvious burrs when you're learning. 75% of your time is on that first stone and the knife should be sharp and mostly deburred before you ever move up in grit. High grits are just refining scratches and cleaning up any remaining burr. If you're getting somewhat sharp edges, but trying to get to paper towel cutting, hair splitting type edges, are you stropping with compound? Stropping is huge, especially if you're not confident with burr removal on stones. Steel and heat treat quality plays a massive role in sharpness too. Some knives just won't get ultra sharp and are too soft to get a clean burr removal. When you're learning, use knives with a proven steel from established brands and take that variable out. Check out Neeves Knives sharpening video playlist. He has very in depth and detailed tutorials and knows what he's talking about.
Mr. Cumberland!!! I do not like you and your you tubes. Just kidding!!!!! I need to stop watching your YT. I saw the Remington 581 and had to go buy one. I live in Wylie Texas. and enjoy all our YT. I just can not spend all my Grandkids money.. I enjoy spending it on things I like, but they or some of them may not be a excited about what I leave them. I went on ling for these two knives, they had two (2) orange ones and one (1) white, but subedited green ones. But i was happy and thank Walmart for all they do for the people. Thank you Sir
Your comments gave me a chuckle. Just what I needed after a long day at work. Thanks for your support and, may you and your family have a wonderful holiday season.
I bought one of the five dollar fixed blades. It’s a shame we’re at a time and place that we can’t buy American and are possibly buying a product made by slaves. And often times a design that’s been stolen. But hey, we all have finances to manage and yes one stashed in places is good. If they’re cheap we will really use them. My Microtech and other high end knives I tend to baby and often find myself carrying my good knife and a folding Klein utility (which I love too)
It's a type of steel developed in the early 1900's and has been used in tool and die for it's resistance to wear. It's also called "D2 tool steel." Contains roughly 1.55% carbon, 12% chromium, 0.25% vanadium, and 0.8% molybdenum. It's not a "stainless steel" hence the coatings used on some D2 knives to improve oxidation resistance. These names such as "D2" or other steel grades are given via patents with people who work in development of materials in the foundry industry.
@@exothermal.sprocket Thanks for that info. I also just looked it up on the internet and there was an extensive description. Couldn't you just wipe the blade with an oily rag for oxidation resistance? Thanks again!
@@eb1684 Certainly just a light wipe of oil would do you well. Even if you've cleaned the blade and completely dried it, the oxygen in the air will work on the contents of the steel and oxidize it over time. Most people will have it pocketed, and there's sweat moisture that would also affect it. Main thing is just to keep it dried and a rub of oil across it. There's some corrosion resistance to steels that aren't "stainless" but it's typically less.
I have skinned, field dressed, processed untold numbers of deer. I have used many different knives, so I wanted to try one of these. If you don't own one, you really can't understand how handy these little knives are. Alot of bang for your buck.

I was thinking the same ever since I first used one. The price point suggests they are "punching above their price level.

Your knives seem very sharp. Have you done a video on your knife sharpening method?
If you want I can do that.
Great review! These are great especially at the price! I purchased several of each. These make great gifts.
Yes they do.

I like the orange D2 knife a bit better myself.
Great video, informative. I have the tan model, am hoping to find the orange. Like you, I use my knives. Thank you.

And the reason people can’t buy them is because people are buying 5-10 at a time be normal and just get 2 so other people can enjoy something
It would be nice if they came out with different colors, and blade styles. I have one and it's a work horse.
Yes, I am wondering what else they come out with.

It is shameful the way you quickly justified slavery because of our "finances."
Are the good for throwing?
Depends on the thrower.
Sold out again as of Monday 11/18. 😒

I seen eBay had them for $30
Its my EDC
Nice. Not legal here in ny. 😢
I wouldn't want to try to skin with those cheap knives.

@CumberlandOutdoorsman ok
Sorry I can’t own an ugly knife same as an ugly gun. For the money, the best buy is an Opinel with a carbon “carbone” blade.
Bless your heart
