Hi Joey! This was a informative video regarding shovel serve.will try it out. Also wanted to discuss about my equipment . I use hinoki 7 ply tibhar H-3-9 blade with tenergy 05 on both sides. I am 53 yr old and have just realised that using my spectacles +1.00 for both eyes far vision improves my game .😀
You had mentioned that you want to start the serve level with the contact point. I am shorter than you, and I notice that my contact point tends to be right where the table would hit the racket and so my follow through is bad at the hinge point. To compensate I have been moving my racket sharply down to avoid the table and it tends to make the serve high. Any tips for shorter players on this serve? What 32 things am I doing wrong on this serve?
Hah! Good question! If you are contacting the ball close to the surface of the table then you're on the right track. It's much more common for players to contact the ball too high which causes the ball to bounce high. If I'm understanding things correctly then you are probably too low. I would start by raising your arm a little bit higher to avoid the contact with the table and continue to follow through by going forward and around the ball (while hitting the southern hemisphere and staying underneath it). You can actually modify this serve by coming down the back of the ball like you mentioned but to get backspin and to keep the serve low then you will need to brush the ball and really grab it with your rubber.
I liked this video very much. As a side note when presenting the serve from the side where there is a white background, the ball disappears a bit. More contrast would enhance this video
Hi Joey, great tutorial as usual, thank you! Any tips for improving the consistency with these heavy backspin serves? When practicing serves, I can always get plenty of spin and make the ball return to the net if it stays on the table, but my success rate is considerably lower when using brushing motion for heavy backspin (ball is either too high, dumps into the net after 1st bounce, or over the net with no bounce😖). Thanks!
I like the question but it's a little tough to say without seeing you do it. I have a hunch that you're probably too flat with your racket and brushing the ball too much. If your contact point is too thin you'll get very good spin but it makes it hard to contact the ball properly. If this is the case I'd suggest to actually spin the ball less until you can get consistent with it and then work your way up to more spin and a thinner contact. Another suggestion is to go a little more forward with your stroke on the serve. If you do this, you can actually swing harder and generate more friction/spin while simultaneously having a better contact. I hope this helps! Let me know how it goes!
Hi Joey, currently i am using TB ALC. I am looking for a new bat to get more 'feel'. Do you think Harimoto innerforce ALC is good in feel and speed to replace TB ALC? Thanks
It's good question but I'm not the right person to ask. I haven't tried the Timo Boll ALC but I can say that I love the Harimoto racket. The reason why I use the Harimoto is because it has a bigger head on it and prior to switching to it, I had used the over sized Stiga Clipper racket for about 20 years. I needed to upgrade but I didn't want to switch to something with a small racket head so the Harimoto was kind of in between what I was using and the standard head size. I plan to do equipment reviews soon, so I'll have to add the TB racket series to my list.
A physical demonstration ,when demonstrating in this instance a service is everything. Sorry but the vast majority of this video was taken up by you talking without demonstrating so personally I learned little. but as the vast majority of comments on your teaching style are very positive this is on reflection obviously me.
All your videos are easy to understand and work for me , keep them coming.
Exactly what I was looking for, great video! Keep it up
Thanks! will do!

You are soooo sooo good at teaching 😍😍😍
perfect, going to try this later
Let me know how it goes! It's a pretty tough serve to learn but hopefully the video will help
great coaching videos. Keep up the good work
Good one.
Kindly upload a video on reverse pendulum sidespin/topspin and backspin serve
Good advices!
Thanks!
Nice👍
Thanks ✌
What prevents the returner doing a return flick with the forearm. Would that mean i didnt get enough backspin

In this serve, we will not be using any wrist movement?
