All excellent points. I'm a 100% self taught player. Sitting at around a 1000CA (2000USA). As you mentioned at the end recieve as many serves as you can from as many different people as you can. You will eventually learn that though everyone has a different service style the ball still has to come over with some variation of spin. Meaning there is a way to make an effective return (we just need to figure that part out) For me the only way to learn these returns was to play as many people as I could (being self taught). One guy at a club I play at Is a DIC (double inverted chopper). Leanered how to receive underspin from him. Another guy, straight up looper. Always served long/ half long. Another guy, served with anti-spin. Figured out that I can punch through "float" no spin balls. Same goes for every other aspect of Table Tennis. Play against and with as many different people/style/serves/techniques as possible. You will be able to take that experience and apply to when facing someone in a tournament that you have never played. Most important point though is to make sure your having fun.
Hi Joey one more request, I was looking at William Henzell serve. It looks like a mixture of a Tomahawk serve and a hook serve. It could be interesting to explain this serve. Thanks.
i know the serve you are talking about and it's a killer! is this the serve you're talking about? ruclips.net/video/nhaAx6nwtnw/видео.html if so, i can try to break it down. i spent some time training with henzell in stockholm about 13 years ago. he's a great guy and a phenomenal player! he spent some time teaching me that serve but i could never quite do it myself.
Yes, From, what I can see in matches he can generate side spin, back spin and it seems to be deceptive. If you can try to break it down it would be nice. thanks Martin
Love all your videos. Is there a way for you to demonstrate the actual techniques of rally strokes with a playing partner in the videos? This would really help make things "click" for me and others. Thanks.
Thanks! I'll see what I can put together! I plan to start reviewing equipment with other players in upcoming videos so I'll try to add in techniques for movements and strokes to the videos.
Great video! You’ve inspired me to work to improve my looping, which is quite poor 😂 Could u make a video about how to perform a short topspin serve, the kind that kick off the table towards u especially? I always hit those long :/ I’m a penholder too, but u may not be able to advise in that :) Keep up the great content! Thanks!
Hi M M. Thanks for watching and for the comment! The penhold grip won't change the technique for most serves, including the pendulum serve, reverse pendulum serve, backhand serve, and many others. You actually have an advantage while doing them because you won't need to change your grip and you will have a much better range of motion with your wrist! I have a few short topspin videos made already but can make another one if there is something more specific that you're looking for. Here are the one's I have: Pendulum Short Topspin - ruclips.net/video/20x8IektAFI/видео.html Reverse Pendulum Short Topspin - ruclips.net/video/_6_o9F-3eQE/видео.html Shovel Short Topspin - ruclips.net/video/CQWqwHQLj24/видео.html My Short Backhand Serve Tutorial also covers the short topspin to some degree - ruclips.net/video/VBt4V37kJUU/видео.html Again, let me know if there is something more specific and I'd love to put it together!
@@TableTennisJunkie Wonderful! I do use a reverse pendulum serve, so I’ll watch these closely and see if I can add some variety, and I’ll try to learn the shovel one as well :) Thank you so much! 🙏
I am coming back into competitive table tennis after 22 years away (am in the UK). The game has changed considerably 9 not just the fact it is now up to 11 and not 21!) but lots more side spin serves which we’re not so prevalent last time I played. I find your videos easy to follow and very useful.
I like your straight to the point approach. I would even consider skipping the intro at all, I tend to skip it on videos. Especially on channels, where I watch multiple videos like yours. Yours is 10 seconds, maybe shorten it to something like 3? Anywayyyy thanks for your good advice and hard work! :)
totally agree. some of my older videos had like 30 second intros which was just ridiculous. i've shortened it from there and am trying to put together something that's only a few seconds. all my favorite channels have really short intro clips
You talk a lot about looping - how important it is and how much you it is your go-to. Can you give us a tutorial on looping pls. I also watched your game against Martin... forgot the name. You had there couple of returns (winning points) where you change the direction or the ball in something (forehand) reassembles windshield wiper. Do you know what I mean? What is it???
I'm currently putting together a video course that will cover looping in all of its forms! I'll have to let you know when it gets released! I think that that shots you are referring to against Martin Rogers are inside out loops. These are done to either change direction on the ball, add sidespin, or counter a sidespin that the opponent put on the ball.
“ I paid $20-$30 for every person with good serves to serve to me for 20mins and there were no consequences really. “ sounds like a great ideal assuming I have this money to spare and assuming the player genuinely shares all their serves.
i like the way you don't hold back your knowledge. thanks
Thanks! I'm mostly just a coach now so I might as well share what I know :)

that tip to loop whenever you can is great, thanks!!!
getting the first attack is crucial if you're an offensive player!
perfect timing, was looking on how to return a serve from a tricky opponent
perfect! let me know if there is a specific serve you'd like me to cover
Great insight: almost every serve is loopable (at lower levels). Thank you for sharing.
Great video with technical info. I will start to work on my serves' return, more. Thanks a lot.
Thanks for watching! Let me know how it goes!

The serve looks easy but there is more than meet the eye, from the way he touchs the ball.
Great video. Thnx a lot! For a long time, the short serve on my forehand was my weakness.
Glad it was helpful! The short forehand is a very common weakness. It's one of the first places I test players on.
Great tutorial
Thank you!
Great content. Could you do a video on third ball attack?
You got it!

Superb video, thank you :)
you are welcome! glad you liked it!
Can you do a video on returning the different spins from the serve
Yes. It’s in the works.
v good info ! thanks junkie
Thanks for watching! Glad it was helpful!

Some of this is familiar from a good table tennis book I read.
If I made a video of myself doing some serves you've gone over - would you give tips on how to improve it?
i haven't done that before but i'd be open to give coaching over skype or something. you can message me at tabletennisjunkie@gmail.com

Genius ..... 👍
Thanks! :D
I wish you did show some visual examples then explain all verbal. It's hard enough to remember all the lingo. Thanks anyway.
Sorry about that. I plan to pick this channel back up and have scripts written for serve return. Hopefully you will find more value in future videos
