    For defensive returns on side-backspin, I tend to favor mirroring the opponent's serve. This negates the sidespin and gives you better control over placement. After mastering this, flicking or driving the ball on the opposite side is more intuitive.

      I also do the same...it works wonders to recieve but then the ball which goes is easy for the other person to attack...as side spins has been neutraled by u..

    A good players doesn't mean he can be a good coach. A good coach do not have to be national player. Tom is good coach ! He is sincere and honest, and make us understand how to play in different situations. Not every player can do it. Cheers from Singapore.

      That's a simple thing many people don't understand. They think that the better you play, the better you should coach and viceversa. And that's not true at all.
      In football, for instance, there are many coaches that have never played the sport.
      Maradona is considered one of the two bests of history and as a coach he wasn't very good.

    I'm playing lot of Eleven Table Tennis game lately and Your videos are fantastic at getting me up in rantings. Yesterday I encouraged player with really strong side-spin serves that killed Me. Now I know that I lost because i try do be to defensive and wasn't using positive strokes. Also Your videos about faking topspin or backspin in serves is giving me lot of easy points in matches online. Thanks :)

    The positive stroke part is really interesting. I never considered that in the equation and I have to admit that, if I'm facing someone with heavy spin serves, I'm a bit more defensive and just try to read the spin and hold the racked correctly. But it always feels super risky and uncontrolled. I will try your tips and see if this works with heavy spin!

  • @leguminosa9

    in short : don't do a passive play (block, push, drive, put, etc) because without brushing (i.e. being "passive") the sidespin is gonna act on your rubber and fly away accordingly
    instead : do an active play (flick, push, drive, loop, etc) or being said, "positive stroke" to override the sidespin using brute force so you can play the ball normally.
    the key here : BRUSH the ball, don't just wait with open angled racket for the ball to bounce at yours.

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  2 года назад

      It all depends which way your opponent in spinning the ball and where you want to place the ball. So there's no definite answer to your question really. I don't particular think about hitting a certain side of the ball when returning sidespin serves. I focus more on directing the ball to a certain position on the table, which I try to do by swinging my bat in the direction I want the ball to go. Sorry, I'm not being very helpful here. I'll have to think about this a bit more!

      In 11 the sidespin is exagerated and, hence, irrealistic. It's more difficul to return sidespin serves than IRL.

    Hi there Tom! Thank you so much for this awesome video, it's so helpful and this service style is one that I often make mistakes with when receiving. I just had a query relating to this though... I find sometimes if I serve this to opponents, they may return it by just putting their bat there and getting it back on and as a result it comes back very high, but slow and with a little bit of backspin (probably side as well?) - this return is something I've never really known how to get back properly and I often hit that service return into the net when trying to smash it because it looks like a sitter. Was just wondering if you knew what I mean about this?

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  5 лет назад +1

      Yes! I know exactly what you mean. The other player doesn't return well, but the ball comes back high, with sidespin and possible some backspin if they try to push it. So to attack these, you need to play with some topspin to lift the backspin on the ball. So try to topspin upwards, rather than smashing the ball.

    • @frankwing7305
      @frankwing7305 5 лет назад

      @@TomLodziak Ahhh right!! Got it 😁 I think the problem is it's just so tempting to smash because it's so high hahah Thanks for this Tom! ☺

    In the vid, you are teaching to receive sidespin+topsin with open racket angle push. Is that good advice? Topspin will get the receiver killed in the 3rd ball attack.
