Can you do the hook serve when you play penhold?

Most top penholders use the hook serve. The pendulum is less used as because the serve receive has a higher chance to come to the bh which rpb and tpb aren’t weaker in. You could argue to pivot in order to utilise the fh however unless you have a guaranteed strong forehand you risk leaving your wide fh open. Hook serve spins the opposite direction so it’s more likely to come to the forehand side.

Although you see bh oriented players like Wang Hao or Lin Shidong typically use the hook serve does not mean that the ball comes to their bh side more often. It comes to their fh side or the middle which allows them to stay more centre to utilise their bh more as they are stronger there.
