I have gone through 60% of this man's videos and there is still not a miss! Every video adds value in less than five minutes. Love how takes what he knows his viewer knows and then relays the music theory to it. I've noticed he portrays music as a language and he just teaches you to speak the language of music. All you have to know is how to speak and he'll show you the way.
Except for the intro. Entirely unrealistic. I’ll give the size of the trombone a pass since there are tiny trombones out there but there’s no way you could wear headphones that big. And don’t even get me started how he’s holding it. 😬😬😳😳🙄 (this is satire obviously I just thought I should share because I found it funny)
This is the best I´ve heard in 20 years. None of that NASA kind of explanations about chromatic pairs and multiplying binomial equations to do a solo. These is what most people want to hear. A simple approach to the solo/chord logic. Now the student can work on his phrases. Many thanks!
I appreciate you all and don't forget to comment and like to help the youtube algorithm. Some of you were asking for the link to the free lesson I talk about at the end of the video. It's in the description below the video.
I’m a sophomore in high school, and I’ve played tuba and baritone for 5 years. I picked up trombone over the summer to play in jazz band, but I have a very basic understanding of the instrument, and my band teacher already has me improvising in front of the whole class who are playing their primary instruments, and it sucks. If we’re in F Major blues, I just play the 1st 3rd 5th and 7 in different ways.
I’m in a similar situation, I’m a senior who’s been playing tuba since 5th grade and picked up the trombone about 2 months ago and might be soloing at a concert in 2 weeks, this one video just helped me make more progress than I have to this point
Incredibly simple tip that should be a principle for every soloist no matter their skill level. As a performer and aspiring teacher this is something I talk about constantly with my fellow musicians. Great video Paul, always look forward to them!
this is the best thing i've heard in a long time. thank you for this quite well said and played example. it's one of my weakest points, no one has ever mentioned anything like this before. keep up the good work.
I love everything you dedicate to your videos, I do not stop watching your videos, I quite appreciate this channel that you give to the whole family of trombonists and musicians, you are a great musician for your professionalism, if I could follow you on patreon I would love to but for now I'm just saving for more tools for the trombone, beautiful video
Can you do a video where you talk about playing faster but still sounding calm and collected? Like still having a pretty and together tone quality, yet faster than your average ballad? Thanks!
Hi Paul, it would be very helpful if you notated what you are explaining. I enjoye your interview of the famous guy who was told his time hadn't come. I bet there is more to that story. I left a comment on the utube.
When you are improvising in a changing chord progression, do you start and end on the chord tone of the current chord that is playing, or do you start and end on the chord tone of the key of the song?
Hey Paul, Probably don’t remember me but I was one of your Violin students at St. Anastasia some 5-6 years ago. Just wanted to say thanks for the inspiration in music. Also, I’ll never forget your cereal song! 😂
Do we choose where to end on the chord tone? I mean if several measures go along on a certain chord progression can they all be blurred together till you feel like it or clearly defined every one or two measures or chords? I am literally just starting to grasp a little bit of improvisation thanks a lot for your video!
as long as the chord tone makes sense on the direction your line is going and not a chord tone just for the sake of a chord tone. (I hope that makes sense) . Think of it as talking a sentence and your first word is a chord tone and your last word is a chord tone. (in relation of the chord that you are on in that current moment)
Awesome video Paul! I have a question and maybe a future video request... I believe that most jazz trombone playing should be played on the straight trombone... Yet, I often see students in my district playing jazz with tenor trombones with the f attachment. (Non-bass trombone players) I have only seen Fred Wesley perform in a pop context with it. I think that traditional jazz band and jazz combo should be on straight trombone. I know one can play jazz on anything (I play jazz euphonium) but I am concerned that band directors are pushing a symphonic concept into jazz bands... IE going from a bright sound to a darker sound... Could you enlighten us on this topic?
Hey Paul, great video!! I’ve been meaning to ask but do you play any classical trombone repertoire and/or have a background in it? I love your content and was just wondering
sorry if this is a silly question, but could you improv in a key signature that isn’t the same as the background track? my school has a band concert in 3 days and the songs that feature solos are in f major and a major but I really only feel comfortable improvising on the b flat scale. Idk if I should try learning in a different key signature or just what to do in general
Too much tension = “free jazz”. Too much release = “new age”.😂 I’m wondering now what it would sound like if you played 2,4,6 and avoided the root. No resolution drives me crazy...but could it have a use? 🤔

Even though I am not at your level of playing on the trombone, this has really helped me as always. Motivation to improvise is at its highest!
you got this! keep on keepin on!

Thank you! Happy to hear it is a useful video for you
Marvellous simplicity. This is exactly what I needed...someone who can explain it clearly, simply and succintly
Extremely helpful. This actually make sense!
Happy you stopped by 🙏
I think the lessons are very practical, which makes our work easier. Respect !🖐👍🙏

wow, your comment made my day! thank you for the nice words and your message motivates me to create more!!
I just started in my school's jazz band, this will be handy.
Helpful and straight to the point! Thank you!
Paul, thanks for this great ans inspiring video. I just play and learn for fun and that is great input and encouraging.
You are great Paul
thanks Archer!

Nick! I totally remember. Great to hear from you! That class was fun. How have you been?
Paul The Trombonist Been doing well, picked up the piano instead of the violin and glad to see you’re still teaching!
Epic as always 😎 helped a ton!
makes me happy to hear it was helpful! thanks
Thanks Paul. As always, good stuff.
I appreciate you!
Thanks, Paul. Very helpful.
Thanks for stopping by!
Can you do a video about how to find the primary positions on the slide for each key?
here you go! ruclips.net/video/-oBURpUC5Ho/видео.html
@@PaulTheTrombonist Thx!

I personally like the f key just because it is easier to reach 6 and 7 while playing faster
I know this is an old video but I really hope you see this. What mouthpiece is perfect for high notes? And what mouthpiece is good for jazz?
I use a Denis Wick 6bs hertitage. Link to my equipment in description
Hey Paul, great video!! I’ve been meaning to ask but do you play any classical trombone repertoire and/or have a background in it? I love your content and was just wondering
I grew up practicing that music and do some etudes for warm up
Paul The Trombonist that’s great, thank you!
How on earth did you come up with that intro. Its great
I feel that jazz improvising is definitely one of the most difficult things to improve on when it comes to music.
so do you end with the same chord you started?
I never wanted to play the trombone until now.
its never too late to start!
I hope you picked it up in the last year this comment has existed
Hey Paul, do you ever get canker sores? If so, what do you do about them? I've had to stop playing for weeks at a time because of them.
Clean your mouth pieces often with hot water and mild soap. Use mouth wash on each practice break. Use a good over the counter lip balm at night
Podrías hacer este video para la comunidad latina o subtítulos en este video???? GRACIAS
Good idea! Do you think google has a translate feature for youtube?
👍

How’d it go?
@@thejabberwocky5884 i ended up thinking of a tune beforehand… lame but it was also my first time 😅
apologies I am new, is that an alto or a tenor?
tenor trombone!

depends on the shapes you create but at some point, the listener is going to want that chord tone!
Do it, post it and tag me. I'm curious now
So you aren’t ending every bar on its chord tone you’re starting and ending the phrase on the respective chord tones.
why do you auto pan your voice
Hii sir
