Thanks, Paul ! You've revived my interest. I'm an American living & playing ((Trumpet & Bone) in Japan. My musician friends love the blues & are always asking for help in learning the blues. This video will really get them on track to having blues fun !
Excellent tutorial Paul. Love your new studio. The Blues was my path to improvisation. I just couldn't seem to master the more complicated Jazz forms. I started hanging out at Blues clubs, seriously worked on Harmonica and took Bass Guitar lessons. I finally got confident enought bring my Bone to Blues Jams, at first just playing horn lines learning the rules of when to play and when not to play. I'm still much more comfortable with Blues than Jazz. Of course some of the best Jazz is Blues. You should have seen the look on my face when I realized than one of my favorite crazy Jazz pieces, Don Ellis' Turkish Bath is essentially a Blues. The only thing I'd add is listen to a lot of Blues. THose lines. licks and solos get stored in your brain and sometimes come out at the right time. No better source than Basie. Of course he brings to mind your mentor Phil Wilson and Basically Blues.
Brilliant, Paul! Many thanks. Exactly the sort of explanation and step by step process I need to impart to my jazz students. Won't do me any harm either, actually!
I play classical trombone, best classical player in my school, but my sound is more jazz oriented, ive tried jazz, and just couldnt get into it, do you have any type of practice advice
im wondering how you get the notes to come out so fine and relaxed because when i play it sounds like im playing an octave above what your doing which is making stuff harder for me
Is that a denis wick heritage? If so what size is it and why do you like it? I’ve been considering getting one to replace my old crappy mouthpiece but it’s a pretty big investment lol
If you Google or RUclips search trombone long tones, you will see what you can do to improve your tone. Generally long and slow notes will improve your tone in time. Start with notes you are comfortable with (Bb through F) and slowly keep adding more notes both up and down over time. Hope you can develop your playing skills to where you want and then even further!
Why at 10:35 do you hide the slide positions with the notes when doing the blues scale? Maybe everyone else already knows this? I will have to go look it up.
Thanks for stopping by. If you found value in this, all I ask if for a like and subscribe. warm regards
Been looking for someone who can donate a used trombone to me..😢

Please do more about the blues! Your teaching method is great!
Amazing, thank you. Finally, someone simplifies and teaches the basics! Wonderful!
Thanks it's a great way to start. I'm new to the tombone but can manage this. Love the blues vibe. Following you from South Africa,
great and to the point!! wish I had these videos growing up, this is so valuable for our students! Thank you!
This was a refreshing review for soloing over the blues. You do a great job at explaining things for people at all skill levels, great video!
Epic lighting!

Thanks good information. Can you down load the sheet music?
Thanks, just take a screen shot
Hey paul! Probably a dumb question, but I really enjoy the sound of your horn. Is that the horn itself or is it more about your embouchure
It’s all about practicing long tones . If you notice I play a different trombone in almost every video

These videos would be more informative if you would play along with a backing track whenever you are improvising. Thanks
I CAN'T DO IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡
