Y'know Paul., I hgave been playing trombone for 62 years, but I have always believed that you never stop learning and you should listen to everyone. I had forgotten about long tones and tend to go straight into arpeggios low to high. My bad. Thanks for the reminder, man. On another note, you really need to get on Pateron. I support three or four other content providers there and would love to provide support there to you as well. Please think about it. Namaste
I played trombone as a teenager. I have just, at the age of 76, decided to take it up again just for enjoyment. This video has been really helpful. Thank you
I recently picked my trombone up after 34 years. The last time I played a single note was 9th grade in 1990. As I was cleaning out my grandparent's storage shed I found my trombone in its case in the corner. I couldn't believe it, and it was in pristine condition. I cleaned it, polished it, oiled it, and started to play. Brought back a lot of fond memories of my time in band. I have been taking lessons but I come here on my off days. You're instructions are phenomenal and I appreciate you sharing your expertise with us.
Not me having played the trombone for a good four weeks now and going on my school's band and orchestra trip in less than 48 hours... i really, really needed this video, thanks:D
You hold the slide almost the way baseball players are told to hold the bat-so gently somebody could easily take the bat out of their hands. No tension. Then you can have an ultra fast response.
I can't reiterate enough how important it is to practice buzzing on just the mouthpiece. If there's ever a line that I'm having trouble playing, i'll usually try to buzz it on the mouthpiece. It definitely is crazy how big of a difference it makes. Can't hit that high A above the staff? If you can buzz it on your mouthpiece I bet you can!
Another to adjust the pressure is while you are playing pull the horn away until air starts escaping from around the mouthpiece. I do this when I do long tones and when I start to get tired as applying pressure is something you think you need to do, but that's not good. Thanks. I appreciate your videos.
The buzzing exercise you suggested is the best I have heard - I have been trying to learn the trumpet and it has been hit and miss - your advice will help a lot.
Thanks Paul. I'm pretty new to trombone (about 1yr in) and having a blast. I've definitely noted my challenges with tension (i.e, squeezing the grip hand holding the trombone) as I increase my effort and pressing to hard on the mouthpiece, especially when I try to hit a high D, Eb, F. Love the tips to back-off and revisit the long tones.
One really important thing that doesn’t get talked about enough when you’re beginning trombone is posture. Posture links to smoother air flow and can increase air capacity which overall makes you sound better. I remember that my sound instantly got better when I realised that I’d been playing on bad posture all along. And, it’s really easy to fix as well!
My sons been playing for 4 years, I played all through school but the last time I touched one was 21 years ago. I picked his up with wayyyy too much confidence and made an ass of myself lol I need to get back on the bike quickly. I told him I’ll learn a song over summer break
Oh man, i miss those days lol. The Bb scale was the best and most amazing scale, until i met the Eb major scale. The best of them all, along with Ab major and F major as well. A major, B major, D major Etc. All suck, the C major scale is rather nice however.
I’ve also just started getting the hang of the Bb major scale… though now that i’ve gotten an actual brass trombone, the 12c mouthpiece feels weird compared to the plastic, pbone 11c mouthpiece i was using.
Just from a trumpet players perspective cause I watched this out of curiosity for what overlaps trumpet you want lots of air pressure not a lot of air and that pressure to be highly highly controlled you want very little physical pressure
as a didjeridoo player*, who is starting trombone, I can say that pressure is important. not all the pressures are important, though... ...just the so called "back-pressure": that's extremely important because it makes you not struggle on buzzing *"didjeridooing" since 2003
Thirty years ago, I played in college as a music major until I realized I'd never be good enough to make a living and teaching sixth graders didn't interest me. So, I earned a different sheepskin. Now, my son is a degreed and happy music educator: define irony. 😆 I haven't touched a horn in thirty years and am humble enough to start again (technically, I can still read and the like) from ground zero. Your videos are very helpful. Thanks.
Hey, I just started on the trombone after many years on the tuba, i also recently got braces, I feel like I don’t have the same sound when I don’t press as hard on the mouth peace, could that be because I’m not used to the instrument, the braces or just need time to practice not pressing as hard?
Hey what would you recommend me adjusting, my problem is I can play just fine when I have the whole instrument but when I have just the mouthpiece it sounds way different.
My son wants to hold his trombone “lefty” with the bell on his right shoulder and sliding with his left hand. Is this an issue? His music teacher is telling him this is not allowed.
When I blow out of it I get it. Then as soon as I do it right. I breathe into it again and change the notes. The notes stay the same I don't know if it's me or my trombone 😅😅😅
Unbelievable. You advocate for less effort and then recommend buzzing. That is the worst of advice for beginners. No. The instrument is NOT an amplifier. It is a resonator. And the mouthpiece does not have that resonance . It takes much more effort to "buzz" the mouthpiece than to play the full instrument.
Me too. The plastic ones has a relatively muffled sound and give more resistance to the air. Some notes on the brass ones are extremely easy to play (resonance in the brass metal).
thanks for liking and subbing, it helps the channel out a lot. I appreciate you all

Thanks Paul !
Is anybody else an experienced trombonist watching this to make sure they haven't been doing any of this wrong the entire time?
Thats me

Woah makes so much sense

Yeah but start buzzing and then put the horn up to it and you'll get a different tone than you normally would

I am in 6th grade and I play the trombone, in 3 days is our concert and this helped me a lot, thank you❤
I'm a beginner trombonist and I'm finding it the hardest instrument I have ever tried to learn! Thanks for all your great videos and advice.
Good trumpet 🎺
facts
It's a trombone
Thanks for helping with my tone, I’ve had many problems with my tone, it was always low and less like a trombone
Another great video👍🏼
Thanks for the visit
Thank you, I always walk away with good stuff and enjoy the way you present, sometime I get a little smile or laugh .
Thank you, I just got home with my 1st trombone and I'm playing long notes!
I’ve been learning trombone for a while now, this has helped so thank you!! ✌️😙
Very helpful, Paul
Contains helpful info and is dramatic. I love it:)

DUDE! You just helped me with moushen!
Thank you just started playing and just working on getting the Bb major scale down.

New video set up looks way better bro
thanks for noticing!
Great video! Love it!
Thanks so much!
Iam trumpet player, interesting how much similarities exist. Longtones are crucial!
My trombone teacher says I play the trombone notes to low, and I don’t know how to raise them.
Good tips, thanks 😄

Sub'd! As a returning player (32 year break), I need all the helps! Appreciate what you are doing!

Hey what would you recommend me adjusting, my problem is I can play just fine when I have the whole instrument but when I have just the mouthpiece it sounds way different.
Just wondering what mouthpiece you use and how important that is to your playing?
How would you recommend holding a trombone with an F attachment that doesn't have that brace for the thumb?
I think it supposed to have a brace for the thumb and that is why called f attachment (Im not very well sure)
I’m a clarinetist that is learning the trombone for jazz band and I could use all the tip and tricks I can get🤣
I wish I could subscribe more than once
I’ve been playing for a while now and sometimes it’s just hard not so to put pressure when I’m trying to play in the higher register
All trombone players can relate
Thank Paul my name is also paul😂 my band director recommended me to you cause we have the same name
The only issue I was still making was pushing the mouthpiece too hard on my face, thanks you.
Its my first time on trombone I learned my first song today it was happy birthday
how many notes can you hit with the buzz??? seems endless right now...=)
My son wants to hold his trombone “lefty” with the bell on his right shoulder and sliding with his left hand. Is this an issue? His music teacher is telling him this is not allowed.
No there are no left hand trombones with a valve system
I learnt much better from the examples
Lip muscles is key. After that you figure out your octaves
LOOK MA!! NO HANDS AND ON MY KNEEEEEES!!😂
When I blow out of it I get it. Then as soon as I do it right. I breathe into it again and change the notes. The notes stay the same I don't know if it's me or my trombone 😅😅😅
I've noticed that you are making kind of like a frowny face. Whenever I do that, the sound is really flat. what should I do?
I hope trombone kids watch this because they always puff their cheeks out, which makes it sound horrible
It's easy to understand why beginners exert too much pressure. Less pressure means the lips have to work harder. (I find.)
Just curious how many people here are drummers wanting to learn how to play something new
Unbelievable.
I have a ''P- Bone'' Trombone, what advice do you have to play it since it's plastic?
My advice is to switch to brass when you get to an intermediate level:
Me too. The plastic ones has a relatively muffled sound and give more resistance to the air. Some notes on the brass ones are extremely easy to play (resonance in the brass metal).
