I've been wanting to play trombone for a long time. I went in today to check out a plastic model and got lucky as they had a boxing day sale and I got a used Jupiter 432 for $199.
I searched & found your video straight away and it turns out I was already subscribed.
Thank you!
Thank you for your great quality instruction. I have not played in 35 years. My goal is halfway decent in 5 years.
Thank you Paul! My 5 yr old daughter Hayley told me that she wants to play trombone in band one day, so I found you here on RUclips and we both enjoyed watching you as you thoroughly explained how to play and we followed along with you using our “air trombones” 😂.
Thanks for making it simple and quick to the point. Also, we appreciated how you explained the position of your mouth and the sound to make while playing the instrument. As I am a former drummer, that was neat to see how to use a trombone. Thanks again! Heidi & Hayley
thats awesome! thanks for the comment
I wanted to play clarinet then I wanted a saxophone now just a trombone TROMBONE IS MY LIFE

I haven't owned a trombone before, but the knowledge from this little video will definitely help when I finally pick one up one day.
While I play brass and most likely need to just learn slide positions and bass clef super well, I can probably gain from watching this in the future. Thanks
Rock on!

Thank you! I just blow air in then it just makes an air stream sound and my mom thought it was broken. Then, I did the buzzing sound and it worked! Thank you again!
I played clarinet for two years in school band and I think I might have finally convinced my band director to let me play trombone so I need to learn how to
Thanks for this, I just picked up a trombone today and I needed someone to explain what to do with my face (which now hurts lol). Your dog is completely hilarious XD

Hey man, I'm enjoying your videos immensely! I'm a fulltime guitarist and want to start playing Trombone. My favourite has always been bass-trombone. Is that an ok instrument to start with, or should I first learn the basics on a tenor? Thanks for the content, awesome channel
Trombone is awesome😎
I just started playing the trombone today is my second day playing
Thumbs up for the dog
I ordered a trombone yesterday and am going to try to play when I get it tomorrow. I've never even touched one. I'm in a band and want to play the intro to "Spiderwebs" by No Doubt which is why I bought it. I learned the harmonica for "Cryin'" by Aerosmith the same way. This video helped tremendously cause I had no clue what to do😹 thank you!!
thank you
Thank you! Im in 7th grade beginner band and ive been yelled at manytimes for missing notes and not playing right!

Been playing trumpet, just got a trombone today. Learning to play lol
I'm just starting trombone, and, question: When buzzing, just blow and buzz or kind of add a vocal humm to it if you know what I'm saying?
That is awesome. Thank you so much. Excellent, clear explaining and demonstrating! One question: I know you said “pitch will come” - I noticed when you played Three Blind Mice, you demonstrated in the mouthpiece, and then not in the mouthpiece. When you did it without the mouthpiece, you still changed your pitch to hum or buzz the tune. Do you change your pitch like that when you’re playing or do you just play a constant pitch or note with your mouth, and only change the pitch or note with the slide?
It’s all in the embouchure, which is the shape your mouth and lips makes when you’re playing the trombone. Since the trombone has only 7 slide positions, each note is achieved with the combination of slide positions and your lips adjusting for the note in question. For example, lower notes will have your lips more “relaxed” while your higher notes require you to “tense” the bottom lip up ever so slightly (or how ever much you need to get that note out). To form your Embouchure you’ll need to do long tones on low E, which is seventh position. It’ll help you relax as well AND develop your tone. The process is long as I’m in the middle of it as well even though I started on trombone almost two months ago.
I caved in to my indulgences and bought a second hand pBone. You can get any cheaper introduction to trombones, rite? 😅 I'm having hard time forming different pitches/notes, it all sounds the same despite different slide positions.. I feel like I'm playing my kazoo! You said something very good about "forming the buzz to match the pitch of the instrument" which I'm trying to tackle now. Any more tips? 🥺
Anyone else here because of band hw?
I am
Me
Thank you for teaching me. How do you trombone teaching kids so we can video that
love the dog
Just got my trombone yesterday
I’m learning trombone by my self after learning sax in school any tips to help he learn faster
memorize what the notes look like when playing, it'll help a ton. and another tip, maybe write the positions down beneath the notes you are unfamiliar with
I've played the trumpet for 10 years, but I've always wanted to try the trombone. What would you say are the main differences, in terms of playing? Does your right arm get tired?!
I play, for fun, the cornet so i know how to buzz, although the mouth piece is quite small so its hard to keep the buzz.
Id like to be able to play all vrass instruments one day but buzzing and finger/hand positions are different between them 🤔 maybe one day
Hi Paul, great video, thank you. I was just wondering, when you buzz your lips, do you need to create a specific pitch? Every time I practice my lip buzzing I get a different note (I am a beginner). Does that matter or are we mainly looking for pitch consistency and continuity at this stage? Many thanks.
At first the most important thing is to just lip buzz (don’t work worry about the pitch) . Overtime you will get more control it and what that will do is help you not “crack” notes as much. At beginning just buzz them lips on any pitch!
@@PaulTheTrombonist Many thanks indeed for your response Paul. I'll keep buzzing!
Very cool educating the 135, first third fifth and I'm obviously complex😊 be cool
Hahaha my 12yr old son just picked up band in school and has the trombone. I did what he said in the beginning of the video. I just blew on my and my son just laughed and corrected me
Thanks P t t. Oh !the dog 🐕 wants to play, cats play the piano dogs can sing as well alittle. We lov u man .
Great video, very easy to follow! However, your cute doggie stole the show.
id like to see a rendition of Do Ya Think I'm Sexy by Rod Stewart on the trombone for a laugh Maestro if you please😊
I just bought a Trombone at a pawn shop. How come it hurts so bad when I play? How do I get it to not hurt my face?
i physically cant do a buzzing sound like that and i got chosen for my school instrument am i screwed?
Ur cool 👍
Thank you! I’m learning how to play the trombone and this helped a lot
Nevermind, I’m learning clarinet now. Trombones are not for me 💀

You favor Paul Simon .
Thanks so much I just stared playing for band in 6th and I suck
you're breathing cos you're alive, HAHAHA IM NOT BREATHING famous last words
Just got my first trombone. Thanks - i will give this a shot as I have no idea what I am doing!
Can play but still don’t know how to blow correctly without my cheeks popping out so I’m still shit 😢
I like this Dude. Basic, love it! For me it was hot cross buns!
I bought a trombone today lol
veery impulsively
but I also thought about the trombone for a full week soo
What about a rusty trombone
Im 64 and i bought my first violin, and violins are fretless. Trombones are fretless, or better, valveless? I want to by a brass, wood, of like flute. So i foguresmd i have to play a trombone. isnt the only wind/wood/brass that doesn't have something to push. Ah, but you do! The trombone itself!
Now I just need to read notes right lol (can’t do that)
barking good
Is the trombone easiest brass to learn.??
yes and no
Odd comment , but your voice sounds like Adam sandlers😂. Anyways, that was a compliment I promise. But thank you for teaching me trombone lol.
I just played 3 Blind Mice!!!!
...still working on the buzz, with steady notes...
that buzzing is very tickly on mouth and lips
2000th like
Wow
i’m getting my trombone next week and i’m horrified

I tried this and now I sound better than Bill Watrous. 😂

so with 7 notes we can play all that jazz and swings? we need more teaching here.😅
Me latterly using a 83 year old trombone with no mouthpiece (no joke)😂
Lol thanks I’m getting a trombone for 6th grade band class in a day 😅
Edit:Instructions unclear because I am not breathing
i literally wss playing like farts before the video now im like actually good or decent
Jokes on you I’m actually a rock😂
I was bout to say 10!!?!?😂
Paul, not gonna lie, literally followed along with a trombone and ended up playing the song to boot! Thanks, perfect tutorial!
(Important disclaimer: have been a trumpet player for 15 years 😉. Figured I try something new)
ur dog is so curious about what's happening
Yeah he is highly intelligent and loves trombone
How do u get your lips in shape in 10 minutes!!l lmao!! Takes time to build that muscle!! Takes many months to create that beautiful sound!! I’m speaking from personal experience of many!! Nobody is going to sound good right away. Any brass wind instrument takes time, patience and countless hours of practice!! Not to mention the fact that once you stop practicing for a length of time you’ve lost that beautiful rich tone you worked so hard to achieve!!! Once you lose that lip muscle you start over!! FUN...YES!! Easy ....NO. Takes determination, dedication and countless hours of practice in order to KEEP what you worked so hard to achieve....(the beautiful sound that your beautiful instrument was made to produce!!)!!!!! I say this from not only MY experience, but from MANY!! Sorry, but this needed to be said!! There is nothing more glorious than the achievement of making beautiful music!! Losing what one worked so hard to achieve is a senseless tragedy!! This needs to be taught to every brass instrument student!!
It’s a life long pursuit , just laying out the foundations to build upon
@@PaulTheTrombonist that’s great but you’re making it sound too easy. Add the fun and throw in some dedication and the THRILL of each milestone accomplished. Share with your students about the pursuit of happy accomplishments......AND the importance of keeping the muscle tone in their lips!! !!!
Souded like hot cross buns lol
i learned nothing from this i was so confused
It doesn’t work
I'm in band and wanted to know how to play
