Thank you for using your platform to tell people about this game. I played it because of your beginner series, and fell in love. It seriously is a fantastic game and your content around it makes it even better!
Hey thanks! The last bit of Mt videos probably won't get seen well but the game is a fantastic, casual, and easy going game. Something that I believe more people would benefit from
What server? Crickhollow is one of the least laggy, and most friendly players one. Check out Voice of the Rings sometime for outstanding tips, tricks, and more.
Haha casually meeting one of the strongest characters in Tolkien lore and calls him a wierdo living alone in the woods. Yeah Tom Bombadil is a Major deal. Thats why when you reach him everything becomes lighter and you become stronger, your stats increase a little
To be fair: Tom is sneaky-powerful, and with him not being in the movies he's been fairly side-tracked for a lot of us. But yeah, I love how Tom is basically like "Okay, go try your best in the Barrow Downs. Do you feel accomplished? Cool, now I'll come and casually do my thing. You got to learn and achieve something, and I know you were never in any *real* danger cause I was here the whole time."
Good old Tom Bombadil, literally one of the most powerful beings in Middle Earth. Hes so powerful that everyone just straight up stays out of his way because hes an odd fellow.
I'm a huge Tolkien fan, but If I ever want to pick a fight with another Tolkien fan I would mention that I think Tom Bombadil is a stupid character. And I really do think that, lol.
@@tatuira93 Tom's there to show us what it's like to have never been afraid. The Hobbits show us what it's like to have almost forgotten fear. As opposed to Denethor and the Gondorians, a life of fear.
TOM BOMBADIL is one of the most mysterious being in tolkien universe .we never know what it is we just know is older then gandalf and sauron and meybe the same age of arda so same age of the planet
I've been playing it since it existed... I test them all, Age of Conan, WoW, New World, Guild Wars, everything that comes out... and every time, all the time, I come back to Lotro :)
You didn't do a skirmish, you did an epic battle, which is a different type of instance, and which I'm not surprised you weren't able to solo as a new player. Skirmishes have a handy tutorial and they ease you in more nicely.
Also, one thing to note that I always found interesting about the early game and prologue sections: depending on which Race you start out with, you'll have different storylines and get different pieces of the early story. So as a Man, you got the full Archet storyline, and have those ties to the Blackwolds, Brackenbrook, Amdir etc. A Dwarf character meanwhile getting to that point will instead have had multiple encounters with the dwarf Skorgrim and know his deal and why he's there, what part he plays. So there's a lot of threads that connect and come together in places.
I played from beta to year 5, then visited intermittently through the years. It has been simplified extensively but still is a very deep and rich game, and, of course, who wouldn't like the incredible Lore/Story associated with the game. I missed it so much that this video prompted me to do the full buy-in and I've created 2 new characters and am enjoying the new content at present as well as revisiting some of those old stomping grounds; including the Ettenmoors! PvMP is so fun, but even it has been simplified from back in the day. Overall, incredible game and it's good to be back. Thank you for the video!
I can say from playing early on in the game not at the very beginning Like you but the changels have been mostly for the better I would say especially the virtue system because I remember how it used to be and what a grind That was of course crafting has been simplified and they could still do some improvements I think With the early crafting levels maybe, Welcome back to the game I hope you're still playing
Been playing since day1 and it still the best MMO out there. Even more so now they have released 2 new lag free servers. New servers are 64bit while on release they were 32 bit. Game is a lot smoother so far but only VIP players are allowed on them atm .Still in Beta.
A shame that these videos get so little views in comparison to your GW2 content - I'm 100% with you. Level 12 right now and just discovering the Shire bit by bit. It's soothing and great so far 🙂
It's alright! I plan on putting my three videos into a compilation video of my total experience ce of lord of the rings to see if it resonates better! Thank you for the kind words!
I returned to this video the same time I returned to LOTRO and man, I relate to your experiences and what you found in this game. It's so good to just be in world of LOTRO, the community is great and the slow-paced game really helps me chill out after stressful day. Cheers to you.
As someone who still loves this game after 16 years, on and off... it's hard game to recommend. But if you get into it, you'll absolutely love it as a Tolkien fan. I love it, but I'm very biased. Tolkien fan, older MMO fan, lifetime VIP.. I'm priviledged and can see how bad it can be for free to play new players when I play my free account.
😅 I guess you’re not a Tolkien lore guy, even the tiniest details are lore accurate. The crebain (easily mistaken for crows) are used by Sauron as his eyes, he spies with em. I think this early on in the game they’re simply crows but ya, even in the movies the party avoids them 😄. Loving your content btw, great vids!
I had no idea! I have held high respect for this games attention to details thiugh my time here. Honestly I have been throughly surprised at its depth!. Also thank you!
I think they're meant to be a breed of somewhat larger, more intelligent birds. Crows that have been corrupted by the Shadow long ago, perhaps. I always liked that the Dwarves of the Lonely Mountain had a relationship with ravens and knew their language.
@@CaffeinatedDad Another thing to consider is that this game, now 17 years into its life, has had significant changes made to the content through the years. I recall when that confrontation with the Crebain flying down to attack Freddie Bolger in Crickhollow USED to be 3 waves of "signature" level Crebain and much more difficult. Back when the Old Forest was a place I hated to go because it was so dark, and with no discernible trails it was so confusing you would swear the walls of trees would shift and move closing off the way from which you had come. That content's difficulty has been lowered over the years to allow for more "soloist" to experience the Epic storyline, and rightfully so. Love the reviews by the way, as a Lifer from Closed Beta till now it always does my heart good to see new folks discover and enjoy Prof. Tolkien's world that Turbine/SSG has re-created for me to virtually live in. 😁
So, this is a thing that isn't made 100% clear unless you're reading notification and looking at the different Instance type sections in the Ctrl-J Instance Finder: Helm's Dike is one of the Epic Battles, not a Skirmish. Epic Battles (ie Big Battles or just BB) were introduced as an experiment to drop little plot beats and an alternate BB-only advancement track during the Helm's Deep expansion. For the most part, they were poorly received, they were written out and the progression-necessary one was replaced with an abridged story interlude, and overall there was much rejoicing. There haven't been any attempts to make more since, and about the only one people will do is run the 6-man Pelargir occasionally. Skirmishes have a brief 2-part tutorial you have to finish, and then as you level you get access to more of them as little mini-instances that aren't 100-scaled, they will be at your level (or whatever you set it to when you launch them) and don't have the major side-system dependence like BBs do. They've been hard-nerfed XP wise as they used to be the best way by far to level (like, seriously overtuned rewards) and were pounded into the ground going the other direction. But, they can be fun as well as helping brand new players get some leveling gear to fill in gaps.
For real though, Fatty Bolger is a hero. He stayed behind in the house Frodo bought in Buckland to make it seem like Frodo was still living there while the rest went into the forest. He survived a close encounter with the Ringwraiths that he *knew* might want to murder Frodo, though he didn't know they were more than just Dark Riders. I'm sure someone else has said it, but getting at least 1 month of subscription is a great way to support LotRO, rather than spending money on LP store points. The main thing you get to keep after your 1 month sub runs out is the ability to use the Swift mounts at the stables. Just be sure you log in each and every alt you might want to ensure they all get it. If you keep the sub you get a 500 LP rebate each month. Sub enough months and you can afford expansions without spending extra. It's a better deal than most F2P MMOs offer.
this has been a fin review series! you know, it would be interesting if you read the book nowadays after playing the game, and when you get to places like barrow downs or meet tom bombadil, you would get the feeling of - oh heck yeah i know this dude! XD from the other side of the road, coming to the game from the book, it is really phenomenal when you can go and see the places that the fellowship visits.. and even places that are just mentioned in a sentence. a favourite example: when strider talks (somewhat bitterly) that barliman butterbur lives less than a day's travel from horrors that could freeze his heart, we are left to wonder. and in the game you get to see these horrors: barrow down wights, the scary ambiance of the old forest, numerous bandit and orc camps, evil aorcerers from angmar, undead dwarves, and a good man turning into a minion of evil before our very eyes. lotro plays very well with implications that are only hinted at in the text!
Dude i think the yule festival in lotro this month. The place is called winter home(Christmas town) and you get a yule gift of random things. I got the hobby horse(toy stick horse) mount. Me and some friends did a hobby horse race 😊
Great Video(s) about Lotro! One very neat but easierly overlooked detail: You have no health or mana. You have moral and power! This is how a Bard or Captain can "heal" you by boosting your moral with shouts, songs and words. Also ever wondered how you can get killed in a MMO but are alive again later? Here you cannot get killed, you get defeated when your moral reaches 0! Such a small but interesting little detail ^^
I'm glad you enjoyed LOTRO. I'm sorry I didn't give the game a chance earlier. I think it's the best adaptation of Tolkiens work and it just seems so weird that the best adaptation is a video game and an MMO at that.
You ever read Lord of the Rings? If so, you would see that LOTRO follows the Lore pretty darn close. Been playing it since the start 16 years ago. Found that Crickhollow server is the least Lagged one, and like Brandywine, has the most friendly, and helpful players.
You should try Dungeon & Dragons Online. It’s a P2P turned F2P mmo also made by Turbine. I’ve never played actual D&D, but that game was really cool and unique. Having played mmo’s since they first came out (and MUDs prior), the cash shop on this game doesn’t bother me in the slightest. If I approached it from an “I just want free entertainment” perspective, then, yeah, it’d probably annoy me. If I, however, approached it from a “retail game costs this and subscriptions cost this” perspective (like the majority of mmo history), then I’d just buy the basic convenience stuff like bag space and whatnot, have the premium that would accelerate me and give me a fair share of bonuses, and then just do whichever expansion packs I thought just looked cool. This is what I did exactly for DDO. Think I spent about $200 over 6 months of playing total: $50 basic convenience account upgrades, premium monthly subscription, and 2 xpacs that I just wanted to play due to the theme/story. Kids nowadays spend that much on half a dozen crappy costume bundles lol
I just started playing this game, and I really think Lotro could be my new MMO-love - if I can sort out two things: 1. Is there a way to make combat feel less sluggish? There seems to be a disconnect between when I press a button and when the ability happens. Another example is when I suddenly stop moving with my ranger and then press a ranged ability (after releasing the move-button) I get an error message saying I can´t use that ability while moving. So I have to wait for a bit of time after stopping moving before I press an ability - that feels terrible to me and is the reason I can´t play one of the ranged characters (which I want to). I don’t think it’s lag since I’ve got a great connection and I remember having the same problem back in the day when I last played Lotro. 2. I just bought a Legion Pro i7 with a RTX 4080-card, but if I go any higher than "High Quality" graphics (and actually High as well) I get choppy gameplay when in more open areas. I feel like I should be able to play this game from 2007 on highest graphics - especially because I can do that in f.x. New World, GW2, ESO, WoW and many other games with no problem. Is there an option I should uncheck or something like that?
Lotro captain from the arkenstone server here. 1) I can only guess that your class is a hunter since you said ranger. And your skill tree is called the bow master/red line(you stand still or you lose focus to use attacks) like a sniper. The line you want is the hunter blue line to shoot while moving. 2) did you download the game on steam? The game has issues with steam. And did you make sure in the graphics settings in the game that it detected your graphics card and also make sure it is on Directx11 too. That should help.
@@morrowoblivion13 thanks for the answer! Sorry, yes, Hunter. 1. I am not talking about skills usable or not while moving. I am talking about moving then stopping then using a skill. The game is slow to understand I’ve stopped, so there is a split second where I can’t use a skill because the game still thinks I’m moving. It feels like lag, but my connection and PC is great and I remember this problem from every time I’ve tried the game. 2. How do I check whether the game uses my graphics card? That’s not something I’ve had to do before. And yes, it’s through Steam. I will try downloading the game from a browser then.
@@JensBal yes the game does lag from time to time(you got a point there) 1) Sounds like your hunter is in bowmaster/redline. because you loose focus when you move and regain it when you stop moving to use a skill. you can check your skill line by clicking on the button that looks like a person wearing a hat. (idk much about hunters since i am a captain main) There are lotro hunter guides on youtube to help you or ask around the server you are in for hunter advice/tips and stuff. 2) you can check to see that the game detects your graphics card by going to the graphics settings in the game and then click on the button that said detect optimal settings.
@JensBal There's also a way to make sure the game is indeed using your RTX card. On your desktop, click with the right mouse button and select Nvidia Control Panel, then select "manage 3D settings" on the left side of the screen. Now go to the "program settings" tab and select the Lotro executable and then select the option to always use your Nvidia card.
"There seems to be a disconnect between when I press a button and when the ability happens" I know exactly what you mean. Many other MMOs will dismount you when you try to use a combat skill. Others just feel snappier. It's honestly maddening playing a Loremaster, where almost all abilities are inductions, and having to wait an extra tick after I stop moving. I believe the problem is related to induction skills, which require your toon to stand still in most cases. I do not have this problem with classes that have a lot of instant-cast abilities (like Champion) or classes where I can induct while moving (like Blue-line Hunter). I distinctly remember being frustrated with this as a Red-line Hunter. Honestly, if they fixed this one quality of life issue, it would make the game feel so much more responsive.
Tom Bombadil is always okay. He was there before the world was young and will be there long after everyone is gone. Tom is Tom, that's who he is. Never say old Tom is not okay!
This month they are testing new 64bit servers. So if it goes well. All those servers will be upgraded to 64bit servers and hopefully the lag will go away.
I am super late but if you spent the $15 for the initial sub and then unsubbed right after you would of still got to keep almost all the sub benefits without having to pay a cent more and it removes a ton and gives a ton of what you see on the cash shop forever.. Essentially my point is that you can spend the initial $15 and then just save the LoTRO points you earn just playing up to Gundabad which is where you would need to purchase that and Umbar and you can do this quite easily just by playing the game and buy all the xpacs completely free.. So the cash shop and the issues surronding it can be negated heavily for just a one time fee of $15 and on that note I have a few friends that have earned the whole game and done so completely free through F2P although it can take awhile.
Tom Bombadil would say "Hey-do-marry-do" when you clicked on him back when this launched, and you would have to talk to him so many times it made me and my wife laugh. It was also aggressive enough that we would yell "Hey-do-marry-do-MOTHERFUCKER!" anytime we saw him, and we say it to each other off and on once and awhile
Honestly tom would have skipped his ass to mount doom destroyed the black gates slaughtered everything in his path destroyed the one ring and make it back to Rivendell to have tea with the Gandalf and elrond
I love Lord of the Rings Online, but I love the original better. Echoes of Angmar server is the best experience. It's the same game, but it's the vanilla version. Before any expansions. It's actually better than current retail version in comparison from difficulty to mechanics (including the old trait tree system). CC was far more effective, virtue traits mattered more, classes were different and not dumbed down or almost exactly like every other class. Far less grindy too! Oh, and NO CASH SHOP.
Problem with t hat mmo : Things are outdated, graphics, systems and the overall UI I tried it twice, had 60hrs in it as a dwarf warrior? axe swinging badass Obv i haven't reached the endgame so i cannot say anything about it, but overall - those things i said up there keep me off from playing it these days.

@@JensBal yes the game does lag from time to time(you got a point there)
1) Sounds like your hunter is in bowmaster/redline. because you loose focus when you move and regain it when you stop moving to use a skill. you can check your skill line by clicking on the button that looks like a person wearing a hat.
Tom used to have a different voice, but they changed it not too long ago. I think of Christopher Lee every time I hear it.
Tom Bombadil doesn't live alone. He has a wife, Goldberry. She wasn't included in the main books so I don't think she would be in the game though.
Goldberry is in the game. He might missed some quests that involve her.
@@Joker-rv4td ah, never played it myself. But if it includes such obscure characters it sounds interesting.
I did check this, and yes she is there! Also I have found out how drastically overpowered this guy is!
Goldberry is in the books. Not sure what you mean by "main books".
Tom Bombadil is always okay. He was there before the world was young and will be there long after everyone is gone. Tom is Tom, that's who he is. Never say old Tom is not okay!
This month they are testing new 64bit servers. So if it goes well. All those servers will be upgraded to 64bit servers and hopefully the lag will go away.
dude it was so sad when they changed to voice actor for bombadil after literally years of it being the same guy
4:24 I'm pretty sure I've seen his wife around. Lol also tom bombadil song is on RUclips with his wife singing.
I've only just found out that he's like some OP character in lore
Push the message of the lord further❤
Tom Bombadil would say "Hey-do-marry-do" when you clicked on him back when this launched, and you would have to talk to him so many times it made me and my wife laugh. It was also aggressive enough that we would yell "Hey-do-marry-do-MOTHERFUCKER!" anytime we saw him, and we say it to each other off and on once and awhile
Now do the Before the Shadow new player experience!
Working my way up!
no idea how i got here but i might try playing this in 2 weeks
hell yall. keep going!
Have you tried D&D online. Dunno if servers still running tho?
Another underrated game under the WoW shadow.
DDO is also run by SSG. Pretty sure it's still getting expansions too.
Caffinated Dad: *praises the game for staying true to Tolkien*
Also Caffinated Dad: *thinks Tom Bombadil is a hobbit*
😂😂😂
Honestly tom would have skipped his ass to mount doom destroyed the black gates slaughtered everything in his path destroyed the one ring and make it back to Rivendell to have tea with the Gandalf and elrond
FYI that is an epic battle you did not a skirmish.
I see that now! No wonder it took so long!
Weirdo living alone in the woods...😂
Problem with t hat mmo : Things are outdated, graphics, systems and the overall UI
I tried it twice, had 60hrs in it as a dwarf warrior? axe swinging badass
Obv i haven't reached the endgame so i cannot say anything about it, but overall - those things i said up there keep me off from playing it these days.
nicee
Hey thanks! It was a great experience!
P2W
I disagree!
