The important thing about the conferences is not to sit through lessons, but about making connections. I would sleep through the morning, and prepare myself for the poster session. This is a good time to start a day in a conference. In the congress, you get a list of presentations. For each day, you have to browse people in your field who are of interest. If they have a poster, great. Go talk to them. Once you are almost done, pick somebody, ask, "What are you guys gonna do tonite?" Then ask them to join you for beer, or ask to join them later, over a beer, and say we could continue this on the evening. Works like a charm.
This is perfect timing! I have a poster in a conference two weeks from now and I have already started feeling stressed. I am also an introvert and I get overwhelmed if I am around a lot of people or spend to much time with them. Thank you for making me feel less alone
Great video! I'm very introverted as well, but I thrive on being intellectually stimulated, so I think that's why when I get to talk about my research (or anything intellectual in general) I get excited and I'm able to last longer socially!
How are you walking like that and video taping yourself don't you care what people may think? You have some amazing confidence. I love your videos very inspiring.
Your videos are absolutely fantastic. I think there are lots of things which are having common. I'm an introvert, hard-working, 3rd-year Ph.D. student in this September specializing in macroeconomics. I have presented papers at international conferences. it is a great platform for getting spontaneous knowledge and meeting lots of experts. I missed some of those great opportunities because of the lack of funding. Can you make a video regarding the funding procedure for academic activities to the foreign students? thanks for keep motivating me in my work.
im going to my firstever conference in less than 2 weeks and i am already sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo nervous that i will have to rpesent in front of people who are likely to know more than me
This couldn't have come at a worse time. I just withdrew my participation from an international conference where I was accepted for poster presentation this October. As an undergraduate, I really wanted to go, but was unable to manage sponsorship/funds due to some wrong decisions I made early on. I hope I can make it next time though, as I loved working on it. Can you share what you think a poster should be like from your experiences at the conference?
Thanks again lucy! I have a question...did you feel that you were negatively disadvantaged by not being perhaps as "chatty" or "outgoing" as other attendees? Or do you think, at the end of the day, the science speaks louder than the person shouting it?
Exactly what I have in mind. As someone who likes to be quiet most of the time, I have always felt sort of "left out" from opportunities and possibilities (not blaming others here). Although I have been doing science for couple of years now, I always question if this is what I want to do in future. I love what I am doing and won't trade it for anything else but I am also starting to feel like science is more for extroverts, people who like to talk and be outgoing. All this pressure to present, share and build network with more and more new/ strange people is too much for me. (I am not sure if this is the real case. I am just assuming from my experience so far). I will be curious to know how (you or) others are dealing with this situation.

The same case occured on me. I always feel uneasy if many people focus on me, so it is a big issue for me to give a speech in public.
Wow, didn’t realize you were at MRS 2019. I had a poster there too!

This is great, Lucy! I hope Boston is treating you well!

Same for me! First conference in 2 weeks, super nervous. Are you presenting a poster?
I feel like I’m seeing myself in conferences 😆

Congratulations for the accepted poster! Using a dark theme is a common thing among the space researchers?
