Thank you for sharing your tips! short takeaways: making slides: - check dimension (4:3 or 16:9), stick to the theme, make sure color works in low contrast - keep thing simple, one point per slide, use minimal text - make every slide consistent, graphs should be distinctly differentiated speech part: - look at the audience: turn to the board only when you need to use a laser pointer or check clicker is working - don't overuse the laser pointer - don't fill the temptation to fill pauses - make sure talk loudly - introduction: how specialized your audience is, and skip unnecessary content - think about where you come into your story, why your work is new/ relevant/ important Q&A - don't end with a thank you slide - feel free to say "I don't know", "come and talk later"
I'm an undergraduate student and presenting at a virtual conference in a month. I have never presented anywhere except in front of the same 30 students I study in my class with. I am extremely nervous. these tips are amazing. Thank you so much
I really like the energy and how enthusiastic you are when you talk about this. Lemme tell you, after many years of sadness I got the motivation to present something in a conference again and here I am, listening to your good advices. Hope I will be accepted in a conference. Thank you.
Just want to say 'Thank you'. I'm preparing my very First conference in my life. (for my Master research) and your tips help me a lot. Hope I can get throgh it well! Thanks again. :))
First rule of a great presentation is always break the ice before starting. Know your material through and through. Treat your audience as if you are talking to one person and never take a cheat sheet.
Hi Lucy! I am PhD student too, and I can understand how nerve racking presentations are. The problems we face are definitely with the slides and keeping them engaging. Could you please share your slide format or template if you don't mind?
Very nice video Lucy! Regarding the last slide. Many people dread the "Questions?" or "Thank for your attention" slides; some just put a black page in the presentation. What I like to do is end with a slide that makes it obvious that the presentation is over, even though it does not say it explicitly: almost always a slide with my contacts for non-academic presentations or a slide with citations for academic presentations will do the trick.
Lucy, you're so so sweet. Just staring at your eyes all through, lol. Though you were fast, I got the whole point. I'm so sure your presentations are awesome. Also, I would have preferred if you had a video presentation/example showing the presentation tips 😁
thank you so much your tips. I am going to present my research in conference this saturday, and i am so nervous. But your tips are so helpful, thank you !
Hey Lucy :) I am giving my first high stake seminar in a week and your input comes in so handy , just the right tips and tricks .... keep up the good work and good luck with your academic career :)
Really appreciated your insights on this topic! I recently uploaded a video on my 5 key tips for presenting at a conference from my own experiences. Was neat to hear your take on a similar topic from a different field! :)
Thanks for the conference crucial information! Going to have my first conference and your tips definitely going to help since I didn't find any video that could provide such a details!
Thank you so much, I needed this! I'm applying for a workshop and when I get accepted (this workshop or any other event afterward) I'll take your notes into account.
Hi Lucy... Love your hair 😍. Thanks for the sharing, my debut is in october 2019. I'm starting on with my slides as I search through for presentation tips, and walla I found your awesome vid. Good luck to you and thanks again. (P. S. I am in 3rd year PhD too 🙏😁)
Thanks for a great video once again! I'm considering doing a PhD in roughly 1.5 years and your videos are great for getting some insight into all the stuff that would come with one :
I love this. And I love how you presented it (I literally held my head high when you said to :D). You have one more subscriber. Thank you for sharing! Good luck on your PhD!
Thanks Lucy! I have to present at a conference in May and I'm pretty nervous. I am nervous about the questions at the end..and nota understanding them haha 😅
hope the conference went great! Oh my goodness the questions bit might be my least favourite, at this one conference I had to ask someone to repeat a question twice before just accepting I couldn't understand them and making up something to say....
I had my first conference presentation yesterday, and am crying right now, I really fucked up, I didn't prepare well, I tried to learn by heart the script, then when I was presenting I forgot many lines, and as a result I stuttered any many words because my brain went blank, I think my presentation was the worst and I didn't eat anything all day, today am searching how to heal from this trauma and started to question my life choices, and whether I deserve to be in this place, this feeling sucks and I just can't forget about it
Wonderful tips! Also, the overall production quality of this video is very impressive! Would you mind sharing what camera/ microphone you used to make it?
Hi Dr. Lucy, I am a new subscriber. Just want to know where did you get the sound you put at the end of your every video? Is it your personal composition or an online clip? I would like to hear the full track. It really stuck to me from the first time I heard it. Appreciate the response! Your work is inspiring!
Thank you for sharing your tips!
