The birds singing in the background is such a wonderful sensory addition to the video, I feel like I could be sitting in a Victoria parlor with the windows open crafting with other ladies after tea ❤️Thanks for the lovely video!
Im so glad there are artisans out there who preserve this type of art, because my patience left the conversation when she secured the wire and the hair to the needle, then taped it? No way
This is wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing this, Grandma Money! I'm somewhat of a novice still with hairwork, and mainly focus on braid/weaving, so this was a highly appreciated demo. If there is anything else you know about hairwork, I would be hugely interested in seeing/hearing it. Please make another video if you're so inclined! Cheers!
Hi grandma! I know you posted an updated video 10 months ago, but could you maybe do an update on any new crafts/work you've done? Your videos are so relaxing and I love seeing what you've made! You're very talented! Much love from Canada :)
Thank you so much for this! I'm teaching a class of teenagers about mourning traditions during the 19th century and this was a fabulous video! We're going to try this!
Amazing!! I only saw a couple of them in person at historical houses we've visited. They may be creepy for some people but it's definitely art. A nice example of a family heirloom. Thank you for sharing. Greetings from Orlando, FL.
thank you for the tutorial. i have seen a couple but for some reason yours seems to be clearer. i have my moms hair after she passed and would like to make a flower from it, thank you
Very interesting. I have a piece of jewelry made from vintage hair. Not from family and I don’t know what to do with it. I also have the braids cut off of Mom, me and our daughter. Maybe I can make a small posey from each for saving.
@@beckymoney I have been practicing a bit here & there and I think one of my fails is, that I'm working with goat hair from a friend and I'm trying to work with too much hair at once. It's finer hair than horse hair but still not as easy to manipulate as human hair (if that makes sense). I'm going to try using less and see how that turns out. I will get it, like you said, it just takes practice. I did order one of those clamp on hobby vices to try out. I'm hoping that if I can clamp the knitting needle once the hair is secured to it, it will be a bit easier to wrap around and keep things straight. 😃
@@pahalloweenfreak I’m so happy you are even trying it. I actually used rabbit fur from my daughter’s rabbit once. You could practice with some thin yarn. It’s a little easier to hang onto. I’d love to see what you make😊
Thank you so much for this tutorial sweet lady. I have wanted to do something with some special locks for a very long time now..and this is lovely. Blessings to you.
Wow you are amazing, I always wanted to learn a craft using hair. Your work is amazing... I only wish I could find long hair like that. Is there anyplace that I can buys some long hair? Thank you for sharing your beautiful work.
Can you post how to prep hair from start till finish. Any type of hair jell or anything needed? Do we have to set the finish hair wreath with anything?
Thanks so much for the tutorial! I have an issue when I take the hair off the needle - it twists around and loses the shape, and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Any tips?
Hi, when I wrap the hair around the needle, I make sure it is tight but not so tight that it won’t slide off the needle. I also use my whole hand around the group of loops when I’m sliding it off. If the wire is tight when you cross them each time then they should stay tight when they come off the needle. It does take some practice. I was not successful in the beginning so keep trying 😊
What do you set the wreath with when your done or do you finish it with anything? I just had a total knee replacement and I actually have time to finally try this!! I cut almost 2 Foot of my hair off!! 😂😂 thank you soo much for everything!! Wish me luck!!
When I make each flower, I make sure there is enough wire to wrap each flower in a wreath pattern or in a bouquet. I then wrap the stems with floral tape that has been cut in half to make it skinnier and easier to wrap. I mount the wreath in a shadow box. It is usually helpful to practice using yarn instead of hair to start out with. I hope all goes well for you and your surgery 😊
Beautiful, thank you! I’ve been wanting to make small beaded and embroidered heart pillow for my partner for our anniversary, and I wanted to include hair. This is a great way to incorporate it :)
I think you could. It would be best to wet the hair and attempt to straighten it some. I have used horse hair which is very thick, curly hair( which I tried to straighten with water and yarn ( which works well to practice). I even used some bunny hair😆 from my daughter’s rabbit one time. Practice w yarn first👍
I have used horse hair but it it much stiffer. I prefer hair that is at least 9 inches long that is cut rather than from a hairbrush. I guess you could use hair from a wig but I haven't had a need to. You can buy hair. I have also seen this technique done using yarn. If the hair is curly you can wet it to make it easier to use.
I heard if you boil curly hair and let it dry (or bake it) straight it'll stay. Apparently this is because the heat breaks the sulfur bonds (which is what makes hair curly), then they reform as they cool, making the hair hold the shape of however you left it
I am an embroidery artist and blacksmith. My health has made me have to retire from all of my blacksmithing and made me where I can only do things that are easier on my body and can be done from bed mostly. I have always been interested in mourning jewelry and mounted are accessories with hair from humans and pets but I am an antique lover so that means I was introduced to human hair mourning jewelry and accessories many years ago and it stuck with me, yet I couldn't really find much info on it and others I talked to casually about it seemed really creeper out by the art. I have no idea why people are so weirded out by human hair art but they really are. They seem to accept the horse hair or pet hair art easily and act as though it is completely different than human hair. I see it as the same medium, just a different source and maybe different texture etc. But same principle. I have used pet hair in my embroidery and collected my persian cat fur and my children's hair for many years. I think I might practice on human wig hair first before I attempt to make anything from the hair I have collected that is precious to me. Your demonstration was excellent and I intend to watch all of your other videos to learn as much as I can. Your technique seems straight forward and you did a great job at showing while explaining at the same time. Your work is amazing and I hope your family appreciates the skill required to really be good at this art. Thanks a lot for taking the time to show me how to do something I have always been wanting to try.
No, I’m not the one w the museum or on that show. I actually learned this art from Ruth Gordon who demonstrated at Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan. I think the museum was in Independents, Missouri and I think the owner was Lillian Calhoun.
I have been inspired! I will be saving my hair from now on.

I have a whole box of hair I’ve been saving for generations to do this. Thank you for the tutorials ❤️👏
You are so welcome!
Grandma Money, PLEASE make more videos!
We need these arts more than ever ! ❤
Now I can fix my heirloom hair flowers. Thank you so much.

Thank you for sharing. Going to try this next time I do a haircut

This is so cool! I’ve been wondering for so long how they used to do this! I’m going to do this with my families hair and my pets!
This was excellent and you made it look doable. Thank you!
I am going to learn so I can make one. My aunt just passed and I am getting all of her hair.
Great tutorial! Not may videos out there showing you some techniques and this really helped!
Great tutorial, thank you. You are very talented too. Your pieces are really gorgeous.
such an awesome video!! thank you for sharing, this is such valuable information! ❤
Thank you so much for doing this! I have been wanting to learn this for a long time! I can't wait to get started now! Excellent tutorial!
I’m so glad to have others try it and continue this lost art. If you have trouble let me know how I can help. It does take practice.

Nice
that was very interesting what kind of wire did you use?
I use 28 gage wire from the craft store. It is an interesting and nearly lost art.

Beautiful, thank you! I’ve been wanting to make small beaded and embroidered heart pillow for my partner for our anniversary, and I wanted to include hair. This is a great way to incorporate it :)
Those are so beautiful!! You have skills. I do have a question though, is it possible to do it with black peoples hair?
I think you could. It would be best to wet the hair and attempt to straighten it some. @@beckymoney awesome! Thank you so much for the info! I’ll give it a try. I’m thankful my sons hair grows really fast.
For practice purposes you can actually make these w yarn. I have seen them made that way.
How can you make these if someone had short hair?
I have added another video
Can you explain more about types of hair that’s best. You mentioned horse hair? I’m guessing I may have to buy hair. Human hair wig?? Thank you

Hate dealing with wire... but now I really wish I didn't just toss my hair in the trash last time I cut most of it off :(
What gauge wire would you recommend?
She is using 28 gauge here.
I use 28 gauge wire.
You need a helping hand. You know those clips you can clamp to a table to hold everything while you work.
