  • This Quicktipp is all about how to make a Cargo Transfer Station, why you need them and how they can work properly. In order to maximize the amount of available imports, Cargo Transfer Stations come in handy, because they let you utilize multiple Cargo Train Stations where each of them handles different streams of import in an efficient way.

    I play on console (PS4) and had a problem with exterior and interior trains jamming things up until I separated them with a similar cargo transfer setup. I recently discovered the Airport cargo train station has two sets of tracks so its now possible to have the cargo transfer in one station. Exterior track goes into station but doesn't leave and the other track is used for internal only. It works great.

    I know it's useful, but I'm not a big fan of this because it looks unrealistic. In real life you wouldn't have a transfer station, what you would have is a marshalling yard where the local branch and industrial spurs would still be connected to the main line, and where trains would be sorted and switched.
    However, to get around that, there's ways to disguise a transfer station as a marshalling yard. What you need to do is set up your freight depots in your marshalling yard so that trains can only ever go onto the local network from the freight depot in the marshalling yard. It ends up being a little bit more awkward traffic-wise since you have locals and imports/exports going in and out of the same stations, but it looks far more realistic. Run parallel tracks to create 4-track lines wherever you need local freight and main-line traffic to use the same right-of-way, and for even more realism you can use TM:PE's junction editor to isolate the networks themselves while still having connected tracks.
    As a separate note, I've actually never had issues with train congestion caused by freight depots. The issue I've found to be the most common is junctions - you need to have long enough sidings to allow trains to pass through for junctions to work, otherwise you get rail gridlock.

    Building these at the entrances/exits to the map also work well, as long as you realize that passenger trains can't enter or leave you city at all. I consider that a plus, but to each his own...

    • @user-eq6te1mw8e
      @user-eq6te1mw8e Год назад +2

      with TMPE you can ban cargo trains on certain tracks. Make a bypass of the station that allows only passenger trains and you are good to go

  • @rickatchison4706
    @rickatchison4706 2 года назад +2

    so here is how this works
    the import/external trains comes into your city and drops off the imports to the first cargo station. it has only 1 way it can go, in and back out.
    now that station spawns trucks to deliver the product, in this instance to the station right next door, and then this station now spawns trains (when it can fill a train I assume) to deliver those same products to another station (a 3rd station) in your city (perhaps by your commercial buildings) all it is doing is transferring those same products closer to your stores (commercial) and that is all that one is doing.
    now the 3rd station will spawn trucks to deliver the products to your commercial stores
    I hope that is clear enough to understand how this works

    • @rickatchison4706
      @rickatchison4706 2 года назад +1

      however this is the case of no industry the only imports are for the commercial

    • @rickatchison4706
      @rickatchison4706 2 года назад

      so if using industry that 3rd station would be near your industry they would get the product and make the goods for your commercial which you can let the trucks deliver or make another station to bring those products to your commercial area

    There doesn't have to be any loop for cars - once they deliver to the cargo station from wherever, they don't have to go back - you can block exit or return way for them and they will teletransport them which is even quicker, but less realistic.

    • @VGEvery
      @VGEvery 2 года назад +1

      @carstenzimmermann4435 2 года назад

      @@VGEvery that's true irl, not in CS; I'd agree with MacLuk: all trucks only deliver to, never from. if they can find a route back to its owner (station, warehouse, factory...) they'll return empty. if no route is found, they just despawn at the destination (great to reduce traffic). new cars become available at the owner once the cars have either returned or disappeared.
      i.e., in the video above, a one-way road connecting the stations would do the same job as the loop

    Replace this with one import cargo train terminal, connected with only a one way road leaving it to the city. After Trucks complete deliveries they despawn since there is no way to get back to the terminal, no mods required.

  • @trevaush

    This is a lot for a newbie, but repetition helps. Didn’t quite understand the role of the top cargo station, though. It seems to connect the external and internal trains.

    • @chiliplayer3510
      @chiliplayer3510  Год назад +2

      The top cargo station handles only the (import) cargo coming by highway connection (its the shortest route for trucks) - to not interrupt the other stations with it. So all highway traffic goes to the top station which will send trains to the city then - so all the highway cargo is going there and nowhere else. This will keep the travel distance for trucks at the minimum and not disrupt the transfer stations south of it. The time it needs to spawn/consume trucks is really the limiting factor of a cargo train station and everything is laid out in a way, to give every source of cargo a shortest route to where you want it to go

    • @chiliplayer3510
      @chiliplayer3510  Год назад +5

      sorry for the late reply :-) The thing with these sorts if builds is they just don't work as a single entity. Some things are important to be setup in a distinct way, like the upper station has to be the closest thing to the highway for example - as a workshop item, people would expect it to just work, which wouldnt be the case. This video therefore shows the concept/idea WHY it works, so everyone can recreate something similar for his own situation. But I may try to wrap my head around it, if there is a way to generalize it

    Really great idea. Now we need a build video so we can SEE the thought process in action. If I understand correctly.
    1. One cargo station is import only and is not connected to the city lines or roads.
    2. 2nd Cargo station is connected to city and delivers to another cargo station in the heart of the city? I assume this will export as well?
    3. Third cargo station is next to hiway to catch overflow imports by truck and is not connected to the internal roads or cargo stations?
    I can't wait to try this but I am still unclear HOW?

    • @chiliplayer3510
      @chiliplayer3510  Год назад +2

      1 Cargo Station is for exporting truck deliveries (the one closest to highway as its closest for the trucks, important detail)
      The double station works as a relay to circumwent the troughput limit of a station in terms of imports->trucks it's important no other trucks go there as it will drastically limit the throughput (every station can only have x trucks on the road including return time)
      The city station does not have direct connection to export - it can only deliver to the relay station.
      This all relies a lot on the fact to force the traffic via smallest route and maximizing throughput 🙂

    • @ausmanpizzaoodie3322
      @ausmanpizzaoodie3322 11 месяцев назад +1

      Yes i had the same question about exports - The key is 'the shortest route' between the two stations that act as the double station scenario. They need to be super close.

      @chiliplayer3510  3 года назад +1

      The 1-lane road comes with the "Network Extensions 2" Mod. In order to ge the roads inside the terminal, you need the move-it mod and just move the end-node of the road inside the building (needs a bit of adjustment until it works smoothly). There is another mod which switches the locations where the cars go in/out f the building - just in case it's needed .. but I dont remember the name

    how do you make a station import or export only?

    • @chiliplayer3510
      @chiliplayer3510  2 года назад +3

      You have to make it logically. Exporting is always Building -> Truck (spawned) -> Export (closest). So the trucks will (only) go to the closest train station for them. Make the import station just further away (from everyone), so it will not do exports
      Incoming trains will basically do the same so make the import train station their closest option

    Train comes in trucks come out straight into the inner hub, train then goes to where assuming a station in the city? Then there's trucks that come out deliver and then come back to the station? So I've ever missed the point or just don't understand it

    • @nickcraggs3394
      @nickcraggs3394 2 года назад +1

      i think i understand, hes taking the trains that come from the outside of the map [import] and then to eliminate the traffic in the city caused by terminals he gets the trucks to take the cargo 100m down the road to another terminal which only goes from that terminal and the city basically taking out the time delay and traffic build up from cars and trucks taking the cargo from outside the city and having to drive it all the way in when the "to the city" train line does that for you"... im probably completely wrong but i take it as double handling in one spot to eliminate traffic having to cross the city to deliver the goods.

    • @richcooper6989
      @richcooper6989 2 года назад +1

      OK so I the import trucks come on trains then they deliver to new train and the import trucks go home, the trucks that then come out the next terminal are they then owned by the city goods buildings? If so then this now makes sense

      I have a one way 4 lane loops of road through my industry with horizontal 3 lane one way roads alternating to have minimal clogging
      Also, commercial gets about 10% as much vehicles delivered from industry so have commercial have easy access with more lanes to prevent backups.

    Explain how you made the train cargo station. Your commentary is bafflingly unintelligible. For example, at 1:51, you say "the import train will either go directly into the target cargo station right into the city which is down here, we have two of them, or it will just turn around and do so that's not very good so what we do have to make this very good happening is we do have this one station..." What does that mean and who could understand it?
