    I have a 2000 bmw 528i and it overheats a tad bit when I start it back up from a stop( like gettting gas or grocery store) while it’s in park, when I take off and I start driving it will go back to the middle and then a bit hot when I stop at a light but after that it will not overheat after that.
    My fans work but I did notice that my front electric fan (auto transmission) doesn’t go as aggressive as it once was, it was always on and loud with the ac on (either stage 3 or 2), now it will only go into stage 1 and stay there. I see no leaks and my coolant level is perfect. Car runs great but I’m having this issue.
    Nathan, I subscribed as soon i got this car lol. Thank you!

      Really hard to say but you could have a thermostat issue , or possible a pulled head bolt

    • @theblackmambaplague
      @theblackmambaplague 4 года назад +2

      Nathan's BMW Workshop whaaaaaa?
      A pulled head bolt? Hows that possible?
      Oh, by the way, the car has 240,000 miles.
      No smoke or funny noises.
      No residue on the oil cap, oil looks good and smells like it. Also, when I squeeze the top hose from the thermostat when the car is cold and hasn’t been turned on, I hear the coolant pass through the thermostat and into the bottom hose.
      I don’t mind swapping the thermostat but on your video it seemed like they don’t usually fail by not opening but by remaining open.
      Thank you Nathan.

    Yeah, well, not long ago during a high speed run on the Autobahn between Sinsheim and Heilbronn, my daughter pointed out from the back seat that there was a red light burning in the display. Yep, overheating! I pulled off as fast as possible, but too late. Radiator failure, and pulled engine block studs. Fortunately, I found a low miles M52TU (about 65,000 miles). My car had about 150,000 miles on it. Lesson here is to replace that plastic piece of crap around 60-80K, along with the garbage plastic impeller water pump. Cheap insurance!

    First I had a coolant leak out the expansion tank hose I replaced that now the pressure builds up on my car so much that the coolant steams and leaks from the expansion tank cap

  • @themotorsportarchives
    @themotorsportarchives 3 года назад

    Dont forget the expansion tank problems, it can crack the housing of the level sensor (on e46 at least) and you get a leak where the sensor sits, and ET can fail completely from that crack. From what I ve researched if coolant level sits below the max it should be fine, just dont overfill or the pressure will cause the system to fail at its weakest point.

    • @Coolbimmerguy
      @Coolbimmerguy 5 лет назад +1

      Same issue but I can drive it for about 30-45 min then it will run hot because coolant leaks at the firewall heater core hose. It does NOT spay the stream of coolant inside the cap which leads me to think its not circulating and once under pressure it leaks at the firewall heater core hose. What creates the stream of coolant that's suppose to spray inside the expansion tank?

    I'm pretty sure a failed thermostat will only ever fail in such a way that the car will never get upto temp. By design the thermostat is always open and the mechanism that allows it to shut is what fails. Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm pretty sure only if the thermostat housing cracks will it cause overheating issues.

Now granted I eliminated the clutch fan cause it sounded like a bus and bought a electric fan to replace the clutch fan but left other electric fan there. So what actually could give me that code I've been getting. That and I got the p0172 and p0175 rich as well.

    Here’s a new question for you, my expansion to pump hose quick connect broke. I replaced the entire hose from bmw.
    It holds coolant until I start the car, it’s leaking somewhere onto all the drive belts and causing them to squeak. I pop the hood and there’s a bunch of steam and it’s leaking down onto the belly pan and dripping onto my ground about 2ft from where it’s actually leaking from. I don’t see the coolant leaking onto the belts or pulleys at all.

    Does that way of bleeding the cooling system work on M62's too? I usually let it go at full fan speed with full heat for a while (until the "noise" is consistant, i.e the bubble noise goes away), then i'll start it, let it warm up, then build upp pressure with a few revs and use the bleeding screw. Rev and bleed until there's almost only coolant coming out. But if i can just do what you did, that'd make it much easier.

    Hi Nathan, Hope you can help me out.
    On my 2004 X5 3.0i, I have a brand new dealership thermostat. I run the engine idling, the temperature stays normal at 12 O'clock and my code reader shows the coolant at 205 degrees F. Thermostat stamp says 97 degrees C which is 207 degrees F. Doesn't matter what I do, the coolant never goes higher than 205, needle at 12 O'clock. So I can't bleed the coolant system completely because the thermostat never gets the chance to open. So I'm left with air pocket I can't get rid of. Is this normal? Hope not!
    Please guide me through this.
    Thanks,
    P.S. The heater blows very hot air on the road and not so hot when idling

    ok, step sons BMW 1995 525i was overheating. I had it towed. Coolant level seemed good. But I changed the thermostat. Checked the old by boiling it. It worked and the replacemment didnt improve the results. Thinking possible faulty thermostat. Went to NAPA to get another thermostat. Changed again and flushed system because father inlaw said the bottom hose had no pressure but top was tight. Thinking it wasn't circulating . Started car and stayed on middle of gauge, not overheating but no hot air when turn on heat. Took for test drive and was in red within 2 miles. Father inlaw said the its not water pump because its not leaking. i said I'm not a pro on BMW's so I am not certain they have to leak to indicate that they don't work.. Seems to me that it may be the water pump. What would you think? Thanks for video. Someone else told me that it may be the silinoid because i don't have heat but would that cause overheat? Seems that would just keep from heat inside car, not overheating the vehicle. This is far different than my Chevy truck. I can work on it. (smile)

      when pricing a pump, it tells me you should replace fan clutch but it runs smooth as ever. May need cleaned but no vibration. I think I may just use the old one anyway.. Good idea/ or no? I'm not cheap but don't believe in buying thing just to have new.

    • @Yophillips3272
      @Yophillips3272 3 года назад

      In case someone else reads this, I would change the fan clutch too. They don't always vibrate when they fail, sometimes they just don't work and the fan doesn't spin at correct speed.

    Hi. I have a 525i 2003 E39. I'm having massive issues with overheating when in traffic. I think its the thermostat, which I will change. But... my water pump? I don't have that little spirting of water coming out from the top of the expansion tank when I turn the fan and heater on. Is that the water pump? Or could it be the smaller water pump at the bottom of the radiator?Thanks you!

    • @TheJond007
      @TheJond007 6 лет назад

      That little spirting of water is created by an auxiliary water pump. I'm guessing yours isn't working which could cause overheating when stopped.
      Edit: Actually I don't think that alone would cause overheating. And yes, that's the smaller pump at the bottom of the radiator.

      I bought a 525i E39 2003 BMW a few months ago. I done a lot of work to it to get rid of a few error messages but not have an issue with the cooling system. I have changed the raditator twice and am satifised that is not a problem.

    • @darrenmungal7921
      @darrenmungal7921 6 лет назад

      I have also changed the thermostate (a cheaper one from a UK supplier) and think this could be one of 4 issues. My auxilliry fan does not seem to be working (have not fully looked into it yet). Also, when the fan is set to hot and is blowing, there is NOT a little jet of coolant coming out from the top of the expansion tank. What is faulty? The water pump or the electric water pump attached to the bottom of the fan shroud?

    • @darrenmungal7921
      @darrenmungal7921 6 лет назад

      Also... (sorry), it over heats whe sitting in traffic. When driving, it cools down. But when coasting at around 60mph (in neutral), the temp still increases, leading me to think that although the aux fan is not working, this is not the main problem. Otherwise the natural airflow would still cool the car down. Would that be the thermostat not opening fully? Or the water pump not working properly? Or both?

      my 325 leaks from one of the tubes coming from aux water pump to heater core. The leak can't be noticed regularly because those other tubes are under the intake and the leaked water gets catched and evaporates before it could touch the ground. So there are many places to check for a coolant loss. You may get your cooling system pressurised and just watch it in a garage...
