- This opens with Genevieve not begrudging her two friends who bailed the night before the show /but instead, gave them them a shout out and acknowledgement that they just couldn't and that's OK too. It really shone a light on kids these days... Finding a place in the world to step in when someone can't and giving space and love to friends who are brave enough to say they need to step back to protect their own mental health,
If ever there were a lesson in grit, perseverance, and gratitude - it was this week. Juliette and Genevieve formed a band so they could play at their high school’s yearly Jamnesty event to raise awareness to take action on international human rights issues. They and a couple friends had been practicing for weeks and I had been hearing them except for one song- as it was a surprise for me, they said. Genevieve, about to graduate- was using this time for Juliette to do her first Jamnesty but since Juliette is a violist and not a guitarist- was slated to be the back-up singer since she really wanted to be with her sister but didn’t think her voice was up to snuff. They were both very excited to play the surprise song for me but were also having fun with friends and doing jam sessions.
At 6pm Weds, which was 24 hours from show time on Thursday- the girls got a call from their friends (bassist and lead singer) saying that they were no longer able to perform on Thursday and they were sorry but could not get in the right headspace to play/sing.
G & J were devasted, but more so, G. As a senior about to graduate, she knew this was her last chance to help her sister whose anxiety is ramping up at the thought of her leaving - and they both wanted to play.
Genevieve called my brother Jamie, who dropped what he was doing to come over at 7pm on Weds night to learn the songs the girls practiced for weeks, as he plays bass. At around this time, their drummer started having second thoughts (I would, too!) about the band falling apart and being in the spotlight of their friends at school. G reassured him that Jamie would pick it up quickly and 20 hours later they put on a GREAT SET and called themselves "11th Hour" :)
They didn’t give up, they supported their friends who decided they could not perform, they supported each other in all of the last minute chaos of it all- and in all of it found the wherewithal to be grateful for each other, for music, for friends and for Jamnesty/Amnesty International.
