One of the key strengths of Deterline's talk is her ability to explain complex ethical concepts in a clear and accessible way. She uses relatable examples and anecdotes to illustrate the importance of ethical leadership and the dangers of a culture that prioritizes profit over people.
Deterline also emphasizes the role of individuals in creating and sustaining ethical cultures, pointing out that it is up to each person to take responsibility for their own ethical conduct and to hold others accountable when necessary. She provides practical tips for promoting ethical behaviour, such as encouraging open communication, modelling ethical behaviour, and creating incentives for ethical conduct.
Deterline's TEDx talk is a thought-provoking and insightful exploration of the importance of ethics in business. It challenges viewers to think critically about their own values and the role of businesses in society and provides practical guidance for creating more ethical cultures in organizations. I highly recommend this talk to anyone interested in business ethics or corporate responsibility.

I was training to work in another area of the company and the standards of the program, the basics were not being taught. I asked family, friends and co-workers what I should do. Should I report the instructor who was not aligning with the mission and standards or report it. I was surprised to find out I was told to keep my head down get trained and be better than the instructor. I went back to class sat for 30 minutes, left and reported it online knowing I would not get the position. The courage I had that day, helped me sleep at night as the training not only affected me but the safety for the people who came in contact with the instructor. I stayed with the company three more years in another role and gracefully left for a better life. You have to be willing for the consequences for yourself and others - that's why it takes courage to do what is ethical. It's easy to look the other way but that degrades your standards and the standards of your company.

Building an ethical culture within a business is not just about adhering to laws and regulations; it is about establishing a set of values that guide behavior, decision-making, and interactions at every level of the organization. An ethical culture fosters trust, transparency, and accountability, which are essential for long-term success and sustainability. Without these, companies risk not only legal repercussions but also the erosion of employee morale, customer trust, and brand reputation.
To create an ethical culture, leadership must lead by example. This means that executives and managers should consistently model the behaviors they wish to see in their teams, demonstrating honesty, fairness, and respect in their actions. Establishing clear ethical guidelines and a code of conduct that aligns with the company’s core values is a crucial step. However, this is just the starting point; these guidelines need to be reinforced through regular training, open communication, and a system that encourages employees to report unethical behavior without fear of retaliation.
It is equally important to embed ethics into the company’s core processes. This includes performance reviews, hiring practices, and decision-making procedures that prioritize integrity and fairness over shortcuts or profit at any cost. Organizations should also establish mechanisms for accountability, ensuring that those who violate ethical standards are held responsible in a fair and consistent manner.
Creating an ethical culture is not a one-time initiative; it requires continuous commitment and adaptability. Businesses should be open to feedback from employees and stakeholders and willing to evolve their practices to maintain high ethical standards. An ethical culture promotes a positive work environment, attracts top talent, enhances customer loyalty, and ultimately drives sustainable business growth. It is a powerful, long-term investment that can differentiate a business as a trusted and respected leader in its industry.

Profit and Money is the main goal of any Corporation. Anything else is secondary.
Appearing 'ethical' is treated the same as any other marketing/advertising costs. A company will spend the bare minimum to 'appear' ethical in order to maintain revenue and profit.
The only way for true change is to create an environment where Ethics & Values are the Key Drivers to Profit. Any other solution is a band-aid.

I like how she presented her discussion on ethics. if you have watched enough of the Ted spokesmen and women you would realize not all of them wear suits they wear regular clothes. Some people dress as everyday people because they are everyday people. What she is discussing is important not the way she is dress. I rather feel like I relate to my audience in a down to earth matter. A person in formal clothing doesn't mean their thought or opinion will be clearly heard or taken in more consideration.

Notice there is no reference to the consequences. The whistle-blowers in every instance listed in this talk lost their jobs and more as a result of their actions. Training people to act with courage and integrity is great, but where is the help when that courage impacts you and your children's future?

Didn't read what happened to those individuals but I do believe like-minded people tend to commune. If they didn't provide the help, I think the government, nonprofits, charities, and churches can provide help. Unless you're living in a third world country, you can survive on that, albeit without luxuries. But I think a wise person will be able to understand that suffering isn't the end of the world.

True. But you can speak up and still follow orders, right? I truly have no idea but am asking for anyone in the same boat.
For instance, Pat Tillman was killed by friendly fire but the administration lied about the circumstances of his death, and
they and the NFL used the lie for their own purposes. Once people spoke up, the lie didn't have the same power and people
could be inspired by the truth instead of the fiction.

Great content. I wish she spoke a little louder and her body language transmitted more "courage" though, so people would be motivated to take action. This woman comes across as sanctimonious. It's a serious topic, but it should be said in a way to rouse the audience to action, such as telling them to get off their butts and participate in democracy. Instead, she turned it into a sleep-inducing mumble.
Also, I find the men's clothing she's wearing distracting. Why do women think that putting on men's attire makes them more powerful and, therefore, more believable?

    • @preasail

Intellect has nothing to with it; tolerance is the word you were looking for. The men's attire comment was for the general masculinization of women nowadays.
Maybe you should get tested for logic and English usage and, while you're at it, learning a sense of humor.

    • @LeiaAskin

Pants and a t-shirt is gender neutral attire. I’m guessing that you have a narrow definition of gender roles based on your “general masculinization of women” comment.
