- Note: I have been told that finding aftermarket barrels to ream to 10mm is extremely challenging now. Please research parts availability before getting too excited about this project!
This video is a short overview of how I put together my USP in 10mm. It's a pretty easy and inexpensive process that leaves you with a reliable 10mm handgun and the parts to switch back to 40S&W again easily. Reliability for me has been virtually perfect for me, and while I say at the end that it won't be a defensive piece anymore, I think it would probably be fine for that purpose. Highly recommended if you like the idea of a 10mm HK pistol.
Parts List:
A 126mm STI 2011 magazine in 40S&W. The notch I cut is about 19.5mm down from the top/center of the mag's front surface.
Barrel reamed - I used Van's Gunworks in Sandusky, OH. Good service and not expensive.
18lbs recoil spring from Wolff Gunsprings.
The capacity is 13+1 in this configuration. AMMO THAT RUNS WELL (SO FAR): Buffalo Bore 180gr JHP, Underwood XTP 200gr, HRS Bear Load 200gr, Sig Sauer 180gr, Remington UMC 180gr, Hornady XTP 155gr, Armscor 180gr, and PMC 200gr (had a couple hang-ups with this one).
My full write-up is on HKPro: tinyurl.com/jtp...
If you like USP content, stay tuned for my epic ALL THE USPs review in the near future.
I like the fast talking. Its infinitely better than the usual drawls and "i just drank a bottle of nyquil" speech patters that most gun videos have.
The guy talks SO fast, you can barely hear when he's supposed to pause or take a breath. The other extreme is - as Fatlas mentions - the usual lazy drawl which has me zoning out halfway through the video.
Gotta start out with some guy with a beard saying “hey guys” then a boring ass story

You can increase the speed on RUclips videos from the settings button up to 2x speed.
"It's one of my absolute favorite guns ever and I plan on making a thoroughly prepared full-length video love letter about the platform in the near future."
Two years later and still no sign of it or him, makes me tear up a little.
Probably got married, had a kid, or both.
Been close to 5 years now. I bet it'll be coming out soon!
Jokes aside I actually would still love to see it, so more waiting I suppose.
Truely...
i miss him...
What are you talking about? He's still around, he's been posting on Reddit nonstop and he was still doing gun photography until 2020. I don't know why he got out of guns, but apparently he's really into music listening now.
"And believe me... there are dozens of us!" I actually lol'ed at that
he meant dozens worldwide lol
Same here!
Hk needs to make a 10mm, period.
H&K SOCOM!
Just find an mp5/10. Good luck
Absolutely.
The USP .45 Tactical is the finest looking polymer frame handgun I've seen
A 3D-printed fitting baseplate would be a great finishing touch to this piece!
Exactly what I thought at a first sight
For kicks, I cranked the video up to 1.5 speed and I could still understand you fine. Your rate of fire went up too! Keep up the good work.
On this one, I made a serious effort to speak slowly. It feels really unnatural for me but I've gotta give the people want they want, I guess! :-)
I've never had an issue with your rate of speech. Long time fan here of all your content.
They need to go ahead and make a USP10
Every since I found out about the usp, I've wanted one with a silincer, just like the one I rented at the range that day. But I can't justify that price for a gun that huge shooting regular handgun cartridges. I think this would make it a lot more justifiable... for me atleast.
Leave .40 S&W. Add “10MM &” in front of .40 on slide. :-)
No BS, no crappy music just great content, best wishes LSP wherever you are now.
Agreed, HK should make the USP in 10mm.
By far one of the coolest things I've seen!
$550 all in is a steal. I've never had much interest in 10mm Auto but you're making me want to buy an old beat up USP40 to do this myself!
elektro3000
Worst thing I've read since reading Killary is still able to roam free..
10mm is a true hard hitter (when talking pistols), so I think you should be on board with it.
Buy a Glock in 10mm. Only product they make worth owning unless you drop serious cash on a 1911 10mm. Even then, you'll end up getting an aftermarket barrel for reloading.
Copper custom has USP .40s with LEM triggers for $385. The LEM is actually a really cool system. Not going to be as pleasant as a match trigger but, not bad.
Thanks for sharing the details. I love HK; I really like 10mm.
There are dozens of us, dozens!
Best part of the video. I would love [anything other than glock] as a tupperware 10mm.
I really enjoyed this video. I knew you were a USP fan, but I had no idea your exploration was so diverse! It looks like a neat project and I think it's a great world that has snowflake hipsters to do this stuff. Well-done as usual.
Just a FYI never slow down the speed of your speech. Perfect length of video while I'm taking a dump, and a lot of info during these sessions! bravo sir, bravo!
Nice mod man. That's awesome. I love the comment "There are dozens of us" lol. Thanks for the video. Good work.
It´s official Mr. Potato, this is my favorite gun site on YT. Thanks! Have a great New Year!
That's a lot of work. Thanks for making this educational video.
A USP has faithfully stood guard at my nightstand for years. I too shoot it better than my other handguns, although a 1911 is a close second. Great guns.
I don't envy many men but that collection of yours keeps on giving and giving.
The HK USP is my all time favorite Handgun as well. I've always wanted one since growing up. By the time I turned 21. I saved up a ton of money to get that gun. Currently mine is the 9mm. But don't worry I like the other verity of diffrent calibers as well.
Finally the perfect sidearm to go with my 10mm MP5
you are extremely concise and to the point in your videos, as well as well informed.
Easy sub
Yes there are dozens of us, nice to see another HKPro member. Was going through your videos then saw this one and finally realized where I had seen your name before.
Cool video. Hopefully with guys like you, the cult following of the Delta Elite, and Glock 20. The 10 MM cartridge will be here to stay.
There's just not enough of us. I've always thought that 10mm is the best mm. I believe it to be the best general purpose pistol caliber out there. Not the cheapest, nor the easiest to find.
I'm not into 10mm, but am totally into USP's. That group of USP's has got me jealous!! Congrats!!
Now that's cool! I'm not surprised that the USP can handle it; you could probably hand load a 10mm with a double charge of powder and fire it and the USP would just laugh at you.
Now what would really be cool would be to convert a USP 45 to .460 rowland. It should be rather simple; just reaming the chamber and a heavier recoil spring. No need to change the magazine since the 460 has the same loaded length, just slightly longer case length. 460 puts the 10mm to shame!
Thank you for still uploading. Love your collection and thoughts on firearms.
I actually really like how the magazine looks hanging out the bottom like that...
That is a FUCKload of USPs. Hawt.
No decent person wants to see your disgusting immature vulgarity spewed all over an open forum son. Grow up, and learn to communicate respectfully and intelligently.
Oh I could do much, MUCH worse.
Welcome to the internet, pal.
TheFew TheProud I enjoyed it
Oh shit its you. Make a new video with a USP already
+TheFew TheProud I enjoyed it too... fucking funny!
Awesome project. I've become a fan of the USP platform myself recently, picked up a new USP9 Fullsize for $650, I'm debating the match trigger upgrade.
Do it. Totally worth it in my opinion. There are guides online that will help you install it, it's not too hard.
Such a cool project. And what a great price.
I'm a .40 and 10mm fan who recently got my first USP. I managed to find one of the few remaining EFK .40 barrels and I'll be doing a 10mm "kit" as well (a kit because I plan to swap it back and forth). I also plan on attempting to cut and weld the mags, biggest downside of this project is the mag price, puts HK prices to shame. I look forward to your eventual video on the USP platform.
wow, no bs review. u have my like sire
Awesome! I love 10mm. I am so going to do this at some point soon. It's the closest I'll get to a true HK 10mm. Now, if we 10mm fans could just convince IWI to dust off the .41 AE Jericho and make it the 10mm Jericho.
Just for your excellent delivery and the interesting topic I gave you a thumb up. I'd give you a hundred more if I could. Nice to hear someone articulate, very to the point who understands his subject thoroughly.
Looks like this USP has been....Augmented
I never asked for this, but never knew I wanted this.
The HK handguns are freaking tanks I have no doubts this holds up I saw a guy do the same thing you did to a Mark 23 and convert it to 460 rowland
Nicely done, thanks for sharing your experience.
Man i hope this guy comes back
I am one of the dozens! Great video, and thanks for sharing.
H&K needs to make a USP 10mm ASAP!
yey more videos ahhhhh the therapeutic sounds of potato and info about guns and stuff
I am impressed ! But I;m sticking with my G20 !
I did that with a Hi-Point once. Worked great. Shot more reliably then ever. Also, I can assure you I had no problem with the steel being too hard, haha. I found it could still fire .40 S&W as well, but since you are relying on the extractor holding the round back far enough for the striker to hit, I do not recommend it.
A Hi-Point 10mm? Now that's an interesting project!
Hi-Points like hot ammo anyway. Also, they are fun to modify because if you screw up, who cares? Just throw it in the recycling bin and try again, ha. Great guns to test projects on since they are so cheap, and the soft metals are easy to work with...sometimes too easy.
That's brave.
Not really. Hi-Points might be clunky and made of pot metal, but they are made of a LOT of pot metal, so they do not normally blow up.
Hello, don't assume this isn't interesting man. I LOVE 10mm, and I LOVE USPs - so there! XD
Snowflake Hipster fan club, checking in
X 2
please don't breed.
Lapine yeah horrible seeing these people enjoy different things
Choke on a fat one
You have given me hope. I may need to contact you for help, but based on my .40 +p++ reloading (SAMMI compliant)- oh yeah- the usp40 can take 10mm, and much more. Yes, love the fast talk- bless you. I've been sorta dormant on gun for 20 years- you are inspiring me. I was all set to just get a glock 20 (and i probably should just for a benchmark), but a third USP40 converted? Oh Yeah, Oh HELL YES. You are the Buddah- thank you
"Why?" Because you can.
love the channel man
you are my spirit animal, 10mm, .357 sig, USP fan. AND YOU KNOW WHAT MATEBAS ARE
I wish I had seen this before buying my 10 mm Witness, although I love that gun too. I have a police trade-in USP40 and it's definitely one of the best-made guns I've ever handled. I could get over the fiddly live round removal but I'd really like a last round hold-open. Are there any other magazines that might be convertible to work for this?
as for the mag sticking out, You should see if someone in your area can 3d print a spacer that looks like the bottom of the grip that will slide on the mag. It looks like it would be an easy part to make. I agree on the ejection port. Enlarging the ejection port doesn't make much sense. You aren't using this as a carry gun or competition gun. You might have more failures to feed if you were shooting reloads, but i cant imagine enough to make modding the slide necessary.
It might be easier to start with one of the skirted competition floorplates for STI's 140mm magazines, and then trim it at an angle to match the bottom of the frame.
Another possibility, he could start with one of the 120mm length magazines meant for the STI compact models like the VIP, Guardian, and Falcon.
That's a properly cool gun!
"There are dozens of us" LOL
You sound like the guy who'd know the very best way to make my 40 into a 9mm
Guess not.. Lol
I'm not sure that changing the recoil spring is the best solution. For other such conversions (38 super or 45 Rowland) the coeect solution is to replace the hammer spring. Adding a heavier recoil spring will certainly slow the slide down on recoil, but it will batter the barrel and frame upon return. While you note that the HK is overbuilt, long-term battering by an oversprung slide could still be a problem in this gun. Just something to consider...
not replacing the recoil spring when shooting more powerful rounds would decrease the lock time and make it potentially dangerous to shoot.
In a hammer fired pistol slide delay is accomplished by the slide/barrel mass, locking geometry, the recoil spring AND the mainspring (actually the magazine spring comes into play too).
When "converting" a gun, most DIY hobbyists only change the recoil spring and ignore consequences of the slide slamming home. The gun's not going to suddenly disintegrate but there will be consequences over time. The ideal approach would involve replacing BOTH the mainspring and the recoil spring.
Ah, i misinterpreted your op.. I thought you were implying that the 10mm primer was harder and thus you only needed a heavier hammer spring to make it work properly
+RabidMortal1 but you forget that will make the double action pull heavier.
I didn't forget that. That's just the price you pay to make a gun run above its weight class. Like the video says I'm sure the USP can take a lot of abuse...but then again everything has a failure point.
Awesome! I was actually hoping you would make this video.
By the way when are you going to da a HK45 video?
I guess I could. I'll put it on the list but it'll take a while to get there.
Lol, dozens of us
Great job, dude.
Awesome video
I would love to see this done with the slide modified for ejection and the roll mark removed , may aswell have one of those shops do a glock like slide mod scalloping at the same time
Except you would want to keep as much beef for strength and mass in the slide as you can.
"He was cheap and fast" Oh boih :33
aún así disfruto cada uno de tus videos de tu canal
espero que me puedas entender bien
Still waiting on that USP review vid.
I never knew why people liked 40 S&W, now I know why.
I am still waiting for your USP love letter.
you could get something like polymorph (google it) to cover the exposed part of the magazine. it's heat activated mouldable and durable plastic and sets to whatever form you make, meaning you could stipple it/give it grippy texture and i'm fairly certain it comes in black. and if you don't like it, set it in some hot water and peel it off or try again :)
Great video!
Thank you kindly!!
I've been planning on doing this. cool!
Ding Chavez would be proud.
I think your stock of HK pistols is worth more than my personal net worth...
don't know why this never occurred to me, since I love H & K, and my Glock 20 has the ergonomics of a 2 X 4, but thanks for the heads up.
So cool!
Calling a 10mm, a .40" cal is the same as comparing 9mm to .357"
Just found A LIKE NEW used USP 40 ... I HAD BOTH THE 40 AND 45 when they both came out years ago.
Thats a very nice backwards clips you've inserted there. LOL
Im surprised that nobody could cut the stock HK barrel. A carbide reamer should have been able to.
I doubt anyone had a carbide reamer. 10mm is niche enough that there is probably only market enough for one company to manufacture reamers, and those reamers are unlikely to be used more than once or twice. Thus tool steel is the obvious way to go for the reamer MFR.
I have never reamed a barrel but I do however have a couple metric carbide reamers. I think I have a 5 10 and 15 somewhere. There actually pretty common in jobber shops.
MrLiamCooley Chamber reamers are different from normal fixed reamers, or the common expanding type. They are shaped to the cartridge case dimensions and cut by plunging in stages. Typically, you drill and conventionally ream to near the case dimensions, then finish up with a chamber reamer.
Ahhh very cool. Ill have to ask my local gunsmith about it see what he has lying around. Seems pretty neat
Never did like the 10mm as a pistol cartridge, very uncomfortable to shoot, love it in the few 10mm carbines (and the one and only SMG) to be found. So not a USP in 10mm for me, but I'd wish for H&K to make an SP5 in 10mm.
"there are dozens of us" lol
Is the case fully supported in the modified barrel?
I have 9mm USP ! love it ! cheers
Cheap and fast is why your Gunsmith did not have a tungsten carbide insert 10mm headspace & chamber reamer, that will chew right into H&K steel.
Cool concept, just hope the frame doesn't get beat back into recycled Hefty bags. The LAPD found that to be the case with the Glock during their testing after the North Hollywood shootout. Long Live the 10mm!
Very cool. I trust the HK USP more than any other handgun. My EDC is a USP .45 but i am wanting to ramp it up a bit. I already did a 10mm Beretta 96 10mm conversion, which was both way more expensive and way more complex than what you describe. So i may have to give it a go. Anyone know if any of the newer 10mm magazines work for this?
Thanks for sharing! At some point I'll figure out how to fix the rollmark, even if I have to do some welding... that hostile environment finish though...
,45 Super is nice, however the 10mm is where it is at. Great video.
As opposed to the 40 short and weak? Which was derived from the 10mm cause the girlies couldn't handle it?
+Keith Brockmiller 10mm drives bullets too fast, they over expand and underpenetrate, ill stick with un-hot-rodded rounds like 9mm and 45 so i dont have to pick between over penetration or over expansion
@@jonahpatton8879 or you could simply carry the proper projectile and not worry about it like the majority of us with more than 2 brain cells to rub together.
@@donovanchilton5817 interesting, so what is the proper projectile for the 10mm? I'm gonna take a wild guess and say you carry Underwood ammo, right? With way to much gunpowder loaded behind a Hornady XTP, Speer gold dot, or a nosler JHP.
@@jonahpatton8879 Your wild guess is wildly inaccurate. Hard cast hand loads. I don't carry it for things on two legs. Their .45 super has the same problem, which I'm sure you know judging by your comment. I find 7 inches of penetration unacceptable as well.
God damn, you must have a really great job to afford all these guns.
Plz come back I ended up using rock island 2011 40 s&w 16rdrs since they’re $45 cheaper
Good afternoon. My name is Alexander Lopatin. Please let me know the actual dimensions of the STI 40SW/10 mm double stack magazine, width and thickness, what should be the dimensions of the magazine shaft in the handle. Thank you
02:00 - a shooter I knew in 1989 used to make reloading dies using an EDM machine.
Why not try?
I would love a factory USP 10mm Roll marked, on a USP 45 Tactical sized frame
But, it's nice the local gun shop has got used Police trade in's for under $500
It’s been 5 years. Where’s that video planned on making?
It worth to see this video and I do appreciate the effort and time spent to modify a gun do you like to fire 10 mil but I would simply use a Glock 40 or such even I am not a fan of Glock .
Now I need one of these altered to look like the 10mm pistol from Fallout.
There's probably a Nerf product around for you. I never could decide whether the designer of that was completely ignorant of firearms, or knew a lot and was trolling masterfully. Here's the description: Mag fed 10mm with a revolver cyl and what looks like a pump action forend, that is weaker than 9mm luger? What? How? Why?
Revolver cylinder? that is pretty stupid.
KYh3adhunter Like I said, I never could tell whether it was a joke on purpose. Brian Fargo always did have a good sense of humor.
Speaking of Fallout and 10mm, HK made a 10mm MP5. Saw a video of it on Larry Vicker's channel.
I have to give some credit to the folks that say the .40/10mm is the worst of both worlds. You don't get the size/power of a 45/45 Super or the round count of a 9mm. I'm a 45 Super fan. I have a Para-Ordnance longslide that holds 16 rounds of 45 Super, 15 in its STI 140mm magazine and 1 in the chamber. My LabRadar says the 6" Mag-Na-Ported Kart c/p ramped barrel throws a 185gr HP at 1350 fps. I could go on and on but it's my favorite gun/project. I love longslides and double stack frames. Having said all that...there is a certain name carisma that H&K has that my workmanlike double stack longslide never will.
It’s nice to hear someone well spoke for once. No uhhhh’s or uhhmmm’s.
A USP 40 is still a decently expensive gun even used. Unless you have a big thing for the USP, I would just save the trouble and get an actual gun chambered in 10mm. I also didn't like the way that recoil spring looked. Might work but I wouldn't feel confident with it. I also use a 24lb recoil spring in my 10mm, and have no idea how you would fit that in a USP. EA makes a cheap 10mm, though I went with the RIA because I wanted a 1911.
"... the steel are just to hard..." well i heard that its use the same steel used in leopard 2 gun barrel, maybe not. but still german steel best steel
