I was a college DJ back in the day. I would put this song on so that I could walk to the dining hall, eat breakfast and get back to the studio in time! They played the college radio station in the dining hall. Life was good. 😊
I first heard it in small town, British Columbia from 1600 KJET In Seattle. When the air was right. Drove me nuts because I think it was for their station ID, and they never said the name of the song.
Haha! I would play Stairway to Heaven when I needed to use the restroom or get a drink. I never had a show when the dining hall was open. Besides, I'm not sure Alice's Restaurant would have been long enough. It was on the other side of campus.
@@TBishopDean The program Director made sure we played nothing that anybody would consider popular. I would get in early to listen to music so I’d have some idea what I was playing.
Great interview! And I agree with Peter... Blue Monday is just the tip of the New Order iceberg. There is so much additional depth in a whole library of New Order material.
I was in Costa Rica last month and the one restaurant I was in for dinner wasn't busy when I arrived. The 19yo waitress asked if I had any requests and Blue Monday was the song I asked her to play. She said she'd never heard of New Order before and she loved the fresh sound, didn't realize the song was made 20 years before she was born. She really seemed to think it was new. We listened to a few more songs while I ate dinner, dessert and chatted. The next night I walked past the restaurant again, it was busier and they were playing songs from Power, Corruption & Lies. Think we converted a new fan or two.

An amazing song that transports me right back to my college days. Still gives me goosebumps and I still turn it up loud even after all these years. One of the defining songs of that era and genre I think.
I'll be the first to admit that I should give a whole lot more attention to the music of New Order it does appeal to the part of me that not only enjoys original disco but post-disco like what they tracked during the 80s. I can just imagine in December 2024 how Peter must feel this holiday season. It's the first one he is experiencing without getting that greeting card from Quincy Jones
I was late to New Order somehow, even though i lived in London in '82-'83 and late '84-'85. I discovered Bizarre Love Triangle back in New York in '86, then went back and listened to everything. Blue Monday remains one of my favorites.
I adore your Ocean Blue shirt. They are one of my favourite bands ever. I’d love to see you dig deeper in some of the great college bands of that era (Mighty Lemon Drops, Innocence Mission, etc.) Keep up the fabulous work!
Peter Hook is one of my greatest musical influences! The first thing I ever played on my guitar was the bass part of New Dawn Fades! I named my favorite guitar after Ian Curtis (1968 Epiphone Wilshire).
When New Order came out with Blue Monday back in the 80's especially 1983 the year i graduated high school that was my favorite song and they were one of my favorite new wave synthesizer bands seeing them on MTV and now on RUclips but another favorite group of mine Gregorian do a great cover of Blue Monday which I listen to a lot. Thanks for this episode on New Order and thanks again for another awesome show Professor.🎶🎶📻🎶🎶
Tne slight imperfection actually made it better. In this world of overproduced everything and control, sometimes a little imperfection adds a human element and whimsy to songs. What an unexpected episode. I've seen Peter Hook and the Light four or five times, and it is always a great show. His novel is fantastic as well. The great thing about this episode is the story about why it was created in the first place (great story) and learning about the four distinct influences on "Blue Monday" - so cool. I had no idea, but it is evident when you hear the licks presented in this video. Wow. Another great thing I learned was New Order and Peter's relationship with the recently deceased Quincy Jones. If you haven't seen the documentary on Netflix about his life directed by his daughter Rashida, do yourself a favor and watch it. R.I.P. Q. Thanks POR. Brilliant.
I didn't even need to watch the video to know EXACTLY which song this was about, but maybe it's because Blue Monday is my all time favourite 80s track.
I wonder how many of us bought Power, Corruption and Lies after hearing Blue Monday and were surprised that it wasn't a track on the album? In any case, what a joy PCL was...
Omg. More of this! I want to know stories like these! The lore behind all my favorite songs & artists. I get on these kicks where it's almost like a drug. A hit of nostalgia.
I love this song. I love the synth so much. This is so cool. This is a Great interview. This is another I had on cassette tape back in the 80's. Thank you.
Awesome episode! Hooky is so genuine and down to earth. Have seen him with The Light twice in recent years, just fantastic. Still have my original 1982 12" of Blue Monday. That song defines the 80's for me (as well as Confusion, Thieves Like Us, True Faith, et al) For those who love the Manchester music of that era and haven't seen it, I strongly urge you to seek out the movie 24 Party People.

Omg, I love this song! This played in the clubs I went to every weekend and there was barely any room on the dance floor to move! I did get both the original album and the extended club mix. This is quintessential 80s right here.
Wasn't 1st time I heard it, but will always vividly remember the song playing on at a local punk rock bar in downtown Trenton NJ (City Gardens), between sets or bands. Loved New Order in the 80s, love them even more now.
What was great about the early New Order albums is that they didn’t include the singles released around the same time. But the albums still had songs as good if not better than the singles themselves. Leave Me Alone is the best track on Power, Corruption, and Lies and one of their best songs ever.
I always go to Hooky's show when he comes to The Paradise in Boston. This last "Substance" tour was fantastic- now I'm waiting for another "Low Life/Brotherhood" show.
The Ocean Blue! They were pretty good, got their first 2 albums. I have a suggestion for you. There's a 90s techno band called The KLF, sounds kind of like the band in this video actually, synth and guitar. Not exactly rock but then you do videos on bands that aren't all exactly rock. If you read the wiki page you'll see it's kind of an interesting story. The two guys who fronted it, King Boy D and Rockman Rock, are both still alive, maybe you could score an interview with one of them. You may recall a song they did with Tammy Wynette in which she sang the memorable line "all bound for Mu Mu Land".
