Faithfully came out while i was serving as a missionary for my church and my then girl friend copied the song and sent it to me. 3 months after i finished my mission we got married and 3 months after that i joined the army. I spent 15 years in the military and my wife did a lot of waiting and that song encapsulated our feelings perfectly, and after 40 years she is still by my side
@@ProfessorofRock Thank you Adam! I adore Journey. Steve Perry's voice still gives me chills. My favorite song is "Girl can't help it." But, the Neil's guitar on Who's Crying Now just gets me everytime. It actually makes me cry. What a great Christmas gift! Journey! Love them!! ❤ I could write about them forever but I won't. Merry Christmas Adam!
I have to admit while I was a teenager I viewed band like Journey, Boston, Foreigner as “old guy music”. I acknowledge my stupidity now and have become a huge fan and recognize their influence on those that came after. Seeing them live this last year was incredible, Steve Perry was missing but they put on an incredible show. Faithfully is such an amazingly touching ballad. I loved every minute of it!
Yeah I was more into grunge back in my mullet days. I didn’t appreciate all music and at 67, I’m having fun adding new discoveries of music I had missed and adding to my ever growing play list!
Man, what a great interview! Was telling my wife this might be your best yet. You really made Neil the sympathetic character he deserves to be. Bands do not come without egos, and we are all blessed to have him, Steve, and Jonathan fighting it out to bring us something real, legendary, and lasting. Great work!
Neil was so open here that I have a new appreciation of him. He’s an awesome storyteller. Next to your interview with Benny Mardones, this is my favorite. Thanks Neil and Adam Merry Christmas
This video showed some previously released interview footage, but this time around included new material. Each time I see Neil and you (The Professor) sitting down and reminiscing about the absolute glory days of rock n roll, I hear something new that only intensifies my admiration for Journey. That Neil took you on a tour of his old stomping grounds shows he appreciates and respects the manner in which you "interview" various musicians. I've watched a lot of interviews with musicians, not only on your channel, but many others, and with you the musicians notice your authenticity toward music and the craft. They seem to decide to go a bit further with you than the interviewers of other music rags. They give to you the respect you give to them. We definitely see this in their attitude which makes for a more laid back and "friends chatting" vibe. Neil and a several others actually treat you as a long time pal. That's how well you fit in with them as you pull off the interview. The feeling I get when these musicians chat with you is as if you could call them up and say, "Hey, I'd love to hang out with again" and they'd be saying, Totally, me and the band were thinking the same". Great video, Adam.
My Mom got introduced to Journey music when my brother John sang Open Arms at a bowling banquet!! She loved the whole Escape album after she heard it!! Then when they released Faithfully, it became her favorite song of all-time and any genre!! It's been 18 years since she lost her battle with bone cancer and I still think of her whenever I hear it!! Thanks for sharing another awesome video Professor Of Rock!! Merry Christmas Eve!! Cindy Snow

POR you do great interviews. You are so prepared and surprise the artists with the knowledge you have but you let them talk and slyly bring up this knowledge at the most opportune time. You and Rick Beato are my favorite. Both great interviewers.
My all-time favorite band, all-time favorite singer (Perry), and one of my all-time favorite guitar solos!!!! Love, love, love “Who’s Cryin’ Now”!!!! “Send Her My Love” is my very favorite but followed extremely closely by “Faithfully”. There are just so many fantastic Journey songs, sometimes it feels like my favorite is the one I’m listening to at the time!
Great show Prof. Its really an honour to be a part of these interviews, to catch a glimpse òf the inner workings of these artists, what it took to make all the music that we take for granted in the "Free World". Whoever created this show, they were geniuses when you were chosen to be the centerpiece. Love it bud, "three chords and the truth" my friend. Merry Christmas to all! ❤🤘😎
That story about Perry's posthumous duet with his dad is one of the coolest things I've ever heard. Sure, Natalie Cole did it with her dad's voice, but he was a solo act, not part of a chorus. The work put into the result shows how much it meant to Perry, and that hits home regardless of culture or language.
You had me at multiple names for Columbia House subscriptions (and RCA), but as I have made perfectly clear several times in the past, I LOVE Journey. What a great episode. And I am even on the HP list today! Merry Christmas to you and your family, sir. Thomas L. French

I've always loved both of these songs, and I've actually done covers of both of them on my RUclips channel. I did Faithfully in the early days when I was doing all Chipmunk versions. I chose it as my first Journey cover because I did it in a Karaoke contest when my wife and I went on a cruise ship years ago. I took 2nd, which surprised everyone, including the guy who won! I fell in love with it when I was a kid, watching the video on MTV. I did Who's Crying Now a couple of years ago, including an air guitar solo. I hope you have a very Merry Christmas! Thank you for all you do!
Neil hardly ever gets mentioned in debates of great guitarists, but he is certainly one of my favs from the 80s. His solos are featured on many Journey ballads, but that does not diminish the fact that he is a brilliant player.
This was during my high school years and these songs poured out of everyone's speakers in their cars and they even played it on the school bus. Brings back many memories.
I love all your videos about Journey, but this one was especially enjoyable. I love Steve 's "Call Me Irresponsible" duo with his father. The video that goes along with it is a tearjerker.
A portion of the solo from Who's Crying Now makes a return on another splendid Journey song, Signs of Life off of the Arrival album. Journey is such a cornerstone of my musical world. 💜
I’d love to see Steve Perry back with the band. He lives near me but is rarely seen out. For anyone that loves classic rock and the stories behind them this is the channel to follow. It’s so rare to hear anything close to this on radio any more. The Sound 100 (now defunct) out of LA had some DJs that knew the stories and history. But that is mostly gone from radio now. Thanks for what you do!
These two great songs are two of rocks most epic and long enduring classics. Journey will live long in history because of these two songs, and others of course.
I've always thought that Neal Schon is woefully under appreciated as a guitarist amongst the average casual listeners. Not guitarists though. We recognize his greatness, and we love Neal's contributions to the instrument!
Yup. Total metalhead growing up. Not too much into Journey back then but Schon has always been a favorite. Very tasteful player that can absolutely blaze when he wants to.

I always had "Faithfully" in my head as an earworm while driving a freight train into the sunset, and once when our unit was in the back of a CH-47 Chinook flying low over Seoul, Korea.
I wasn’t a fan of Journey growing up in the 1980’s, but now I’m a huge fan! One of the biggest reasons is the guitar solos. I have noticed in recent years he’s speeding through the cords in concerts and I personally feel it was much better when he took his time hanging onto the notes.
JOURNEY!!! Awesome! FEELING THAT WAY/ ANYTIME is my favorite!! Speaking of Journey,,, Thank you for the journey with all your work and putting out the ROCK and ROLL Gospel!! MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎄🎁⛄☃️❄️✨☯️☮️🎸😎
“Faithfully” was written on a tour bus on the way to a concert at SPAC in Saratoga, NY about 20-30 minutes from my house in Schaghticoke NY! Journey is LITERALLY the soundtrack of my life! I learned all the songs and got all the albums (drums for me) and mastered them! Nowadays the emotions really flow listening to this music, and it is strong 😢. Such beautiful music from amazing people! And yes, that “simple” outtro is an epic sound I think is a very important part of that soundtrack! Absolutely my favorite band EVER!! Absolute brilliance!! Tears will certainly shed from me when these incredible musicians start leaving this earth. Merry Christmas

I have loved Journey since the 70’s, I was born in 67 haha. I have very clear memories of riding my banana seat bike with the gorilla handle bars, red transistor banging off my wrist, listening to SP blending in with band seamlessly. ❤❤❤ them. Neal’s playing is as easily recognizable as Steve Perry’s voice. I was devastated when they separated and then elated for the reunion only to be heartbroken again. Always a big part of me.
Columbia house! I had somehow forgotten about them. They built my music collection. Faithfully will always remind me of my husband. He spent 23 years in the military and was gone a lot
That's how I built up my cassette collection. Spoke to my brother yesterday he served and we did a lot of writing through the years. My husband was always on the road so I understand.
Merry Christmas to all of you in this amazing community it's been great talking music with fans who totally appreciate everything that Adam has done for this community be well and have a great one
In the late 80s and throughout the 90s, I traveled extensively for work (computer business). My son was born in 1990, and those years were tough on our little family. "Faithfully" become my anthem, to sing when returning home from a trip in my car, or in my head if on a flight. That song helped me get through those years. In 1978 I was a fill-in board op/DJ at a college radio station, and I played the promotional LPs of the day. Playing hits off "Infinity" made Journey one of my favorite classic rock bands. I saw Journey play a private (corporate) event in September 2024... Neil Schon and Jonathan Cain are still incredible musicians.
I still sing and play "Who's Crying Now", half for the vocals and half for the guitar. The chord Neil uses to end a verse was made popular by Stevie Wonder in the 1970s, a stretch over four frets. Neil uses a phase shifter for effect, also a barre chord in Gm when Stevie did it with open strings. The beginning of the end solo reminds me of a John Coltrane sax riff, huge intervals, so I start with that and take it from there. Our love will never die.
I’ve always loved solos that elevate and compliment a song and not just showcase a guitarists technical ability to shred. Three comes to mind…Stairway, of course. The Spanish guitar influenced solo in Cockey Rebels Make Me Smile, and the mellow solo in Marley’s Waiting in Vain.
I remember playing the Journey video game back in the 80’s. l spent a lot of time in arcades back then and it seemed Journey’s music was always playing. What a time. I really wish Steve Perry never left that band. Great vid, Prof. Cheers from Tulua, Colombia 🇨🇴
Great episode on the GOAT of rock bands. My wife still has her Frontiers Tour Tee in her closet. I personally saw them open and close the tour Once in Seattle the other was the Tacoma Dome. We both attended the Tacoma show but didn’t know each other then, but Faithfully was the song we danced to at our wedding, so as you see we are a Journey Household. Thanks for all the great content you put out on the great era of music
Neil’s greatest (technical) guitar solos were from Journey’s very first album (well before Perry joining the band). I’m sure many of your followers have not heard that album, but I would highly recommend a listen. It’s truly a progressive and different sound than ‘classic’ Journey.
Ive seen Neal in a bunch of other interviews and he always seems to play coy and comes off as a bit big headed. But witn the professor he is as nice and open as can be and its really nice to see because im a huge fan of his. Alrhough i will never understand the sunglasses 😅. What a fun interview
That guitar solo on Who's Crying Now always seemed to have an Alan Parsons Project sound to me. I was in High School when most of the biggest hits came out and I enjoyed every one of them!
My accounting professor at mortuary school in San Francisco was Susan Maher. She got into accounting because she was Journey’s manager or financial manager when they started.
"Faithfully" is my first Journey song, and "Heaven" is my first Bryan Adams song. I heard each of them when it was a new song. It's fitting to acknowledge the impact that the first had on the second. I only became aware during the 2010s that Prince had written the title cut from *Purple Rain* and needed Jonathan to sanction his usage of the accompaniment. Even if I knew that Prince had written a ballad with the same 1-6-5-4 accompaniment, it didn't occur to me that he was afraid he might be infringing on Jonathan's composition. Add epilogue portion about Steve Perry managing to electronically assemble that duet with his father, that is the kind of thing that dreams are made of. It isn't difficult for me to relate. My own father wasn't really a singer himself and never made recordings of his voice, but I wish I had the capability in me to do the same type of pairing.
I consider “Who’s Cryin Now” to be one of the best songs ever!! Come out my jr year in HS and I was in love with a girl who didn’t quite share my depth of emotion.
Neil Shon has orchestrated some of the most incredible melodic guitar solos and accompaniments of all time. Infact, I don't know of any other lead guitarist that plays melodic guitar consistently in rock. Just my opinion... but I doubt anyone would disagree. 😊
Journey was incredible. Who's Crying Now is such a great song. It really ranges from ballad to rock anthem. What a great album Escape was. Frontiers was also very good. I love it. Merry Christmas to you and yours!
I loved Columbia House until they started shipping records without liner notes. Once they cheaped out I stopped my membership. The liner notes were ESSENTIAL!
Just when I thought this can’t be about Journey because you’re wearing their t-shirt, you pulled a switcheroo and fooled me. I saw Journey at The Cow Palace and Loverboy was the opening act. Great concert!!!

I wasn’t a fan of Journey growing up in the 1980’s, but now I’m a huge fan! One of the biggest reasons is the guitar solos. I have noticed in recent years he’s speeding through the cords in concerts and I personally feel it was much better when he took his time hanging onto the notes.
Great interview prof! Really liked hearing Neal's perspective on the interplay between him and Steve Perry.
For sure!
JOURNEY!!! Awesome! FEELING THAT WAY/ ANYTIME is my favorite!! Speaking of Journey,,, Thank you for the journey with all your work and putting out the ROCK and ROLL Gospel!! MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎄🎁⛄☃️❄️✨☯️☮️🎸😎
I saw Neil Schon in Old Davis, his previous group, in a tiny club. I was blown away.
What a job. You love music and you get to sit down and talk to the greatest musicians still with us and discuss those that have left us.
Love your content and the respect you give to everyone you cover, regardless of genre, you are a modern day, Casey Kasem.
Great topic. Thanks Adam. Happy Holiday's everybody!!!
@@jstnxprsn happy holidays to you and the Mrs!
***PROF. TAKES A 'JOURNEY' BACK TO 1981, TO TELL THE TALE ABOUT A ROCK BALLAD WHO'S NOT "...CRYING..." ABOUT ANYTHING, DUE TO IT'S SUCCESS...*** ..well, RBS is still healing for the Holidays, but a quick tale about this Rock classic...I was professional DJ Once, and did a gig at an upscale clothing Store in NYC...(cont.)
....I was always told by the Store manager to "...play upbeat...." as MUCH as possible...One day, it was raining, cold & MOODY, So, I slipped in "Who's Crying Now" (to fit the mood).....and I had that Store *TRANSFIXED!* ...A French chick came to my Booth, and thanked me for the Music, and I apologized, for playing a 'downbeat' tune....
...She said, "..If the Music is GOOD, that shouldn't matter, because it will always MOVE you, on the inside..." ...and THAT, was ALL she wrote! ...ha-HAAA! ..SO, October 1981....

Straight up getting Richie by the dollar!
Another fantastic video, Professor. Thanks, Adam
I've been told Neal Schon owns some convenience stores here in Central Indiana. They play Journey songs 24/7 inside the store.
Journey has a great catalog. There is an album for every mood
Amen!
Thanks for sharing Lisa!
That's how I built up my cassette collection. Spoke to my brother yesterday he served and we did a lot of writing through the years. My husband was always on the road so I understand.
You can never go wrong with Journey. No matter what you do there is a song for something by Journey.
Who’s Crying Now was my favorite when I was in college. Now, I realize I liked a lot of Journey songs.
Thanks for sharing!
Happy Holidays, Professor!
Professor if you ever get the chance ask Neal about a great duet, he & Carlos did called " Song of The Wind".
Great interviews, great stories, and you gave me information that I didn't know. Thank you.
I remember playing the Journey video game back in the 80’s. l spent a lot of time in arcades back then and it seemed Journey’s music was always playing. What a time. I really wish Steve Perry never left that band. Great vid, Prof. Cheers from Tulua, Colombia 🇨🇴
I remember those days! THANKS GIO
Very cool! Thanks for watching!
Neil’s greatest (technical) guitar solos were from Journey’s very first album (well before Perry joining the band). I’m sure many of your followers have not heard that album, but I would highly recommend a listen. It’s truly a progressive and different sound than ‘classic’ Journey.
Another GEM of a video. Thank you!
THanks Steven!
Merry Christmas, Adam!
Journey is easily in my top 5 favorite bands. There is no song that moves me more than Faithfully.
I can hear that!
You are a very tall guy, professor! Love your show❤
Great interview! Love your content.
Thanks Lisa!
I consider “Who’s Cryin Now” to be one of the best songs ever!! Come out my jr year in HS and I was in love with a girl who didn’t quite share my depth of emotion.
Journey... Prince... wow!! I am so glad to have spent my youth during the time when music was so great. Thanks Professor!
"Faithfully" was a staple at HS dances and played across the street at neighbors homes daily.
Neil Shon has orchestrated some of the most incredible melodic guitar solos and accompaniments of all time. Infact, I don't know of any other lead guitarist that plays melodic guitar consistently in rock. Just my opinion... but I doubt anyone would disagree. 😊
I was late to the game on Journey. They had a few albums out and I never heard of them. My cousin played a cassette and I've been a fan ever since.
Still tear up with Faithfully every time it comes on.
I get it!
Journey was incredible. Who's Crying Now is such a great song. It really ranges from ballad to rock anthem. What a great album Escape was. Frontiers was also very good. I love it. Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Merry Christmas Jerry!
My favourite Neil Schon solo was 1986's 'I'll Be Alright Without You'.
To this day I’m still flabbergasted that Don’t Stop Believing didn’t go to #1.
Truly grew up with Journey. Love this band.
My children know that when "Who's Crying Now" comes on, there is no talking allowed!
I loved Columbia House until they started shipping records without liner notes. Once they cheaped out I stopped my membership. The liner notes were ESSENTIAL!
Love Journey, Edge of the blade, such a good song. First albums 77-80 great records. So many great bands.
Merry Christmas everyone!! Got to see them in ‘80!! Absolutely amazing!🤘🔥
At their Peak! Merry Christmas Brent!
Just when I thought this can’t be about Journey because you’re wearing their t-shirt, you pulled a switcheroo and fooled me. I saw Journey at The Cow Palace and Loverboy was the opening act. Great concert!!!
Thanks!
