Can't you just disable this Genuine cartridge check in advanced settings in HP Smart? We have a similar menu on hp laserjet pro ml203dn, and we just disabled the fake cartridge check. Hence, we are using third party toner which is 4 times cheaper, with 9nly issue so far being printer warning about low toner level way before it needs to, but otherwise printing despite warnings
Pro tip: insert empty syringe into cartridge first and pull the plunger up to create a vacuum inside the cartridge, you should then be able to inject the new ink much easier with less mess! Hope this helps everyone! 😊
A HUGE THANK YOU FOR PUTTING THIS ON YOU TUBE! I COUDN'T AGREE MORE ABOUT HP's price gouge ink scam. I refuse to pay their outrageous prices for ink. They also block 3rd party cartridges when their printers are updated, so make sure to not update, and disable updates if using other cartridges. It's a huge hassles to reset some printers.
I've been refilling my old Brother printer for 11 years and still have not replaced the cartridges. Two tips: 1. Figure out how much ink you need by SLOWLY refilling till you get a tiny bit leaking out. After that, just use one ml less. 2. No one mentions this, but the ink is water soluble. I do this in my laundry room sink with hot water running and plenty of paper towels. Now that I'm good at it I never have any leaks or accidents anymore. Always use rubber gloves, of course. Since it's water soluble, you can clean the syringes by drawing hot water in and out and flushing them until they are completely clear. This works great trust me. Follow all the other directions watch a few more videos there's a good one about priming and drawing the air up out of the empty cartridge. There's plenty to learn, but it does work and I must've saved hundreds and hundreds of refilling. I think I paid 20 bucks for my kit and haven't used it all yet.
Thank you for this valuable information. HP is a really big scam. I just canceled my subscription, and they told me that I cannot you the 4 filled cartridges that are installed in the printer and that I have to buy new ones from the story. I got a message in the printer that I could not print any page. This company is a big scam and needs to be exposed because to their practices.
It’s hilarious the gov is suing Apple for $20b for increasing price of iPhones but turn a blind eye at this printer scam that’s been running for a few decades.
I'm glad you mentioned marking your cartridges A B, etc for switching them out... I refilled my cartridges A and popped them back in the machine. The printer prints fine but I have an error message stating used or remanufactured cartridges detected. I thought about switching the A cartridges out with the still sealed package HP cartridges (B) and then reinstalling the A cartridges later, but since I'll know when my ink is getting low, simply by seeing cruddy printing, I'll know to pop the B's in. Since I have to replace my cartridges every 3 months, I should have plenty of bottled ink for a few years. Thank you!
Syringe tip: When you've finished with a syringe you will use again, but maybe not for a good while store with the plunger pulled out a quarter inch from fully in. When you come to use it, just push it fully home to get it moving. Sometimes the seal sticks in the barrel and will detach from the plunger when pulled..
Just came across your video today. I did the same thing with my old HP. It wasn't as advanced (Stupid) as your printer. It had a 2 cartridge memory for each colour. So I had 3 cartridges which I switched around - numbered 1, 2 and 3. When cartridge 1 and 2 were empty (of the same colour) I just had to install cartridge 3 and the printer would accept the cartridge. No stupid questions or anything 🙂
For some printers you might even need 3 to 5 cartridge sets, since they remember the last 2 to 4 used cartridges. No need to refill all of them though. Just re-install the old (empty) cartridges one after another (turn printer off-on between changes). Then re-install the refilled one. To "fool" the printer you best use original cartridges, since non OEM cartridges often have the same, limited, range of serial numbers, so there is a fair chance you will have duplicate serial numbers and so this trick might not work.
@@julianweiser9985 This right here is why I bought an Epson Eco-Tank. 15 years worth of ink in the box for a home user like myself. I could throw it away and buy a new one when it runs out of ink and still feel like I got a bargain.

I don’t have 2 sets of cartridges (yet) so I am periodically refilling the cartridges as I go. But to be sure, your video is AWESOME for a getaround for these expensive cartridges.
How many people were on the way to the store to buy another ink cartridges, yet gave this a thought and you’re here watching this video?? 😂 Now your going to Amazon to buy the refills instead 😅😂🎉
Excellent explanation that they've pre-programmed the printer NOT to accept the last used cartridge hence your 'work around' A and B swap out...thank you. Not ready for the messy job but getting there...they're charging extortion high prices for simple ink - license to rip you off.
Another important tip: Be very careful with the bottom part of the cartridge, as it is quite easy to damage the print-head, ruining an othewrwise perfect cartridge, forcing you to buy a new one, just for a working print-head. (Hard lesson to learn...)
Honestly I don't print that often, only a few pages a year, so I quit buying ink and just started doing my printing at FedEx. It's annoying because I have to drive 15 minutes to get there and back but it's worth it.
Hahaha lol if you only print a few pages a year it's cheapest to just own a 50$ printer and buy a set of cartridges every 4 years or using the cheapest instant ink subscription
This is probably my plan when my current printer dies or I get fed up with the ink nonsense. I barely use it and dropping $78 for a new set of cartridges is dumb as hell.
@@markfesenk0 Why so many updates? Epson, for one, uses that firmware update to invalidate third party ink cartridges, one model at a time. When you install Epson cartridges it sets a timer going to estimate how many days printing you will be likely to do. I do not print things out ver much at all (less than 1 document/month) so it always said that one or more of the cartridges were empty when they definitely are almost full. Hello Christopher, I have the HP Office Jet Pro 9018e, and the Cartridge depleted display is on for both the Cyan and Yellow Cartridges. I went ahead and purchased the JETSIR 4-color refill kit from Amazon. Based on the video the second set of cartridges is needed as I was going to try and fill the original ones by turning on and off the printer. BTW I bolted down to Staples to grab a quick replacement set before finding & watching your video and got sticker shock on the 962XL 4 color which was $122.99 before tax and roughly $132.00 OTD I thought thank goodness there were not like French fries with choices coming in sizes small, medium, or large. Sir the large box is $199. Thank you Christopher for the Video and if you have anything else you would like to add please do.
That is a great video. Thanks. I wonder if you replaced the refilled cartridges and then as a last step completely uninstalled the printer and drivers if that would work. There would probably still be a single file left after everything else was removed. Look for it and delete it as well because that is the file that would have the cartridge notifications to try and trick you even if you go through all those steps. But somehow you have to get or burn a hard copy of the driver software. I don't know if such a thing is even possible. I never connect my printers directly to the internet. I think the IOT is a completely insidious invasion of privacy and a hacking vulnerability.
Canon had a great printer the Pixma IP 1000. Very easy to refill the cartridge and it has no sensor so it can't tell if it's counterfit or not. Too bad I had no idea about the ink waste pad. If I did I would have drilled a hole at the back for draining excess ink. If that waste pad sensor is triggered it will tell you it's full and it will lock out your printer you have to take it to a repair center so they can reset it.
I have contacted a few professionals and they told me to refill these cartridges when they show you a low ink level. You have to do it immediately or they are done for.
Yup. I am doing the same thing. I’m sure they have corrected the software to recognize the “A-B” method. Of course, nothing like a hard reboot for your printer! 😊
Yes I'm having the same problem with my cannon ts3522 and I sent 100 dollars on it and the ink runs out in a week I truly only get about 20 prints and that's with only 3 or four pictures
Be sure to get a slightly used model that's still in good condition. But try to find one that uses more generic older drivers. Do not ever load new drivers or buy a new printer. Eventually, we won't be able to buy good used printers, but try as long as possible. Hp links the hardware with new drivers that disable the printer if you try to refill the cartridges.
Thanks - so in other words it can be messy! What is the shape on the front of those syringe needle? Has it been blunted? I have bunch of new carts for other printers that I want to use so will go buy a syringe.
When I buy a printer, I never use it online or upgrade it. I make sure I don't get one with cloud service either, keeping it offline ensures I will not be updated from the original factory settings, beyond my own personal settings. I also have an eco-tank Epson, I never use HP or Canon.
Does it have to be fully depleted or can it almost be fully depleted with a warning sign? I tried to run out of the ink intentionally but the estimated ink cartige levels won't go down no matter what, even if the prints turns out inkless.
Don’t be conned by the ‘recycling’ scam that is for fools it’s MONEY they are all about there image maybe all about ‘green recycling’ but that’s for the stupid people!
I followed the instructions... refilled original HP 910 Cartridges (HP OfficeJet Pro 8035e)... the refilling process worked out fine, kept printing normally... but 2 weeks later, Printer doesn't let me print anymore and is showing the following message: 'CARTRIDGES REJECTED - The indicated cartridges have been recently identified as used or counterfeit". Is there a way to print with refilled Cartridges with this Printer?
My HP9025e is still stuck at "depleted cartridges must be replaced…" on yellow when it is full. Not sure how to get past this because it won't print yet
Been doing it for a year. It always shows “low”, but keeping an eye on it so it doesn’t get to “depleted” is working for me. 4 black ink refills so far on my 8020. 👍🏻
@@NotSo-bp9opHigher cost of entry, yes. But that extra upfront cost is saving you a lot of money and a lot of headache in the long run. If this guy had an EcoTank (for example), he could have bought the same refill kit or similar off Amazon and just poured the bottle right into the tank. No hassle. No syringes. No having to "trick" the printer software to get it to work properly. Simple process. I'll never buy a standard cartridge based system ever again, unless cartridge prices plummet. And even then, it it would still be more hassle than a tank based printer because you would have to buy another cartridge set and/or do this extra long refill process every single time. Tank based is fill and forget for a considerable amount of time.
You told that it remembers the old cartridge so you cant use it again. that means it only remembers the last used cartridge? so you can practically change two cartridges between uses and its okay? what about the chip? is it reusable?
I refilled when near empty but not empty. I printed and it went fine. then it informed me that it was empty. It printed white papers since. I then did like the last in your video and it went and shut off my printer and now the printer does the same thing over and over again goes on you see the line and dots from left to right and shuts itself off again.
😅the HP we had would not accept the ink we used it said that it was not genuine HP ink there was no way to get it to print or give us any options. Had to buy new cartridges
That's a great question. I bought a type of printer ink that has very thin nozzles on the bottles and mililiter markings on the sides of each bottle. Seems to take, as he says, about 19 ml. of ink per color cartridge.
Looks like they may have updated the firmware. I am not able to locate the HP Smart that allows you indicate it is a used cartridge. Can no longer replace it with a refill. PLEASE HELP!
This is for Envy 7640 with a 62 cartridge: You can try this but I cannot guarantee it will work: Locate the reset button on top, it's an indented circle and press with a pointed object (but don't puncture) for about 10 to 15 seconds... it sometimes works...
@@tigerlilly6895 I actually RESET to factory and restarted as if the cartridges came with the printer. I still recognized it as a refill and it is show it's empty HOWEVER it is allowing me to use it. I WILL be trying your suggestion next time. Almost out of another color. Thank you tiger for taking the time to share.
I realized something else today when I refilled and it wasn't printing right. I always clean off the cartridge very well before putting back but I realized the pins inside the printer when the cartridge lines up had some ink on them so I used a qtip to clean and it worked just fine. Hope that helps.
For my Canon cartridge I had to drill a hole in the top to refill. I just cover it with electrical tape. Works great. Been using the same cartridge for over a year, printing daily.
Boy o boy, what a damn racket... Can you explain why you need the extra empty cartridges? How does the damn printer know you put the same cartridges back in?
The carts have a (smart card) similar to your SIM card, it stores information (among other things) about how it’s used when it was used and if it was originally depleted or not. So you’re paying for this technology not for the ink.
This is insanity. A friend gave me an HP inkjet printer like yours and it was maddening to try to change the language from Russian to English, nothing in the PDF manual about that, had to do deep search on RUclips to finally find the solution. Then configuring the printer via bluetooth to my Mac was another nightmare. Gave up, wrapped up the printer and will give it away to someone. Bought a Brother laser printer which works great. I hate HP.
Fill them when they are still 1/2 or 1/4 full. If the printer doesn't set a flag that the cartridges are empty, then you won't need multiple sets to defeat the "used or counterfeit" message. This is just a question that occurred to me during the video. I've not tried it, but seems like it could be a solution. Has anyone tried it?
The printer doesnt actually check the ink level in the cartridge. It just assumes it will be empty after set amount of printed pages. So even by refilling it midway it will still show up as empty after some time.
@@MrPauls40and you can't print anymore then? Because after refilling and all the messages it also says the cartridges are empty and you are still able to print
It works not letting them deplete! Fill periodically. Of course they always show “low”, but it works. “Depleted” means the jig is up for that cartridge.
Hate Hp! …have 3 of the 8600 and all give a message of printer head error on one and other doesn’t register a 1/2 filled authentic ink shows empty then the last one won’t work at all because it still shows empty black authentic cartridge. Don’t have a regular computer so couldn’t do this last step of troubleshooting.

Yup. I am doing the same thing. I’m sure they have corrected the software to recognize the “A-B” method. Of course, nothing like a hard reboot for your printer! 😊
Helpful video!
May I ask which refill kit you ordered? Does the ink in that kit work just for HP printers or all inkjet printers? Many thanks!
Interesting and thanks.
Thanks - so in other words it can be messy! What is the shape on the front of those syringe needle? Has it been blunted? I have bunch of new carts for other printers that I want to use so will go buy a syringe.
SPOT ON
When I buy a printer, I never use it online or upgrade it. I make sure I don't get one with cloud service either, keeping it offline ensures I will not be updated from the original factory settings, beyond my own personal settings. I also have an eco-tank Epson, I never use HP or Canon.
THANK YOU
Hi, can you refill the HP office jet Pro9120 cartridge?
Does it have to be fully depleted or can it almost be fully depleted with a warning sign? I tried to run out of the ink intentionally but the estimated ink cartige levels won't go down no matter what, even if the prints turns out inkless.
All good thill they program the chips in these things to only allow for a certain number of prints. Then it won't matter.
Might already be the case
It's amazing what lengths they go to steal from the public, how much does making the item know the cartridges are old add to the cost of the product.
It's because the printers cost more then they sell for so they have to earn money somewhere but it's still expensive as heck
Yeah cartridges with chips. Where have we gone in this world
Where did you buy them ink bottles from? I need this because I got the same printer
Really shows how little companies care about recycling when they pull this scheme
I have to agree on that. They only care (allegedly) when WE they want to blame us.
Don’t be conned by the ‘recycling’ scam that is for fools it’s MONEY they are all about there image maybe all about ‘green recycling’ but that’s for the stupid people!
May 2024 here.
Hi Can you show how to refill this printer model? HP OfficeJet Pro 8120e
Thanks so much! 😎 4:05
Do you know maybe if I can do the same mine doesn't have the touch screen though
How do you know when it's full? You cut out that part.
Does this trick work after participating in the instant ink program for 6 months?
My HP9025e is still stuck at "depleted cartridges must be replaced…" on yellow when it is full. Not sure how to get past this because it won't print yet
Does this procedure work with other brand name?
Hello..can i use this method on hp catridge 955
thank you for info
THANK YOU.. THANK YOU... THANK YOU!!!!
I've been trying with the refill process on an other printer, but I had a lot of leakage, and bad printing results. What am I doing wrong?
Thank you!
Can you link the ink you used? Thanks.
Mine wont read what should i do it says the are empty?
can i refill my "refill ink into hp 1255" or is this not refillable?
Thanks!
Thank u do much
What if you refill the cartridge before it's completely empty? Like when they get down a half?
Yeah I also thought that would be better
Have you tried this? Did it work??
Been doing it for a year. It always shows “low”, but keeping an eye on it so it doesn’t get to “depleted” is working for me. 4 black ink refills so far on my 8020. 👍🏻
i am not sure if hp would even be able to enforce the warranty unless they have a lab to test the ink or see a refilled cartridge.
This video demonstrates why you should buy a tank based printer: no hoops and no blue fingers.
Aren't tank based printers higher in price? Like $200+? This method might save you that $100 or so markup for tank based printers.
Pro-tip here: DO NOT buy HP at all, mever! Buy Epson EcoTank printer and forget about that shitty scum.
You told that it remembers the old cartridge so you cant use it again. that means it only remembers the last used cartridge? so you can practically change two cartridges between uses and its okay? what about the chip? is it reusable?
Just keep 2 sets & keep swapping them. That’s it. Don’t refill the current cartridge in use.
Some (newer) printers remember the last 2 to 4 cartridges. (See my other comment for some hints.)
@@syedali9383and why not refilling when it still has like 20-40% left?
@@syedali9383does this trick not work with only 1 set? Do they lock you out of your printer then?
Thanks
I refilled when near empty but not empty. I printed and it went fine. then it informed me that it was empty. It printed white papers since. I then did like the last in your video and it went and shut off my printer and now the printer does the same thing over and over again goes on you see the line and dots from left to right and shuts itself off again.
😅the HP we had would not accept the ink we used it said that it was not genuine HP ink there was no way to get it to print or give us any options. Had to buy new cartridges
Wish there was a solution to expensive color laser toner cartridges.
In New Zealand we pay $50 per ink cartridge.
Well gee whiz, I’m moving to New Zealand!
看来不止中国这么做,欧洲也是呀,不过我们用的是中国版墨盒,型号是965
HP and all the other printer manufacturers should have gotten their asses sued off for pulling this shit.
I don't have an extra cartridge can I just refill the one in it
How do you know when it’s full ?
That's a great question. I bought a type of printer ink that has very thin nozzles on the bottles and mililiter markings on the sides of each bottle. Seems to take, as he says, about 19 ml. of ink per color cartridge.
I think by the weight of the cartridge
when it spills lol.
When it starts to drip from the round mesh connection. Don’t blast it in, be easy until a drop or 2 comes out.
@@1AcreHomestead For me it works at least a few times... Try different amounts of holding it down, 10 seconds, 12 seconds, 15 seconds...
I realized something else today when I refilled and it wasn't printing right. I always clean off the cartridge very well before putting back but I realized the pins inside the printer when the cartridge lines up had some ink on them so I used a qtip to clean and it worked just fine. Hope that helps.
@@tigerlilly6895 It does!!!!! Thank you!
Canon User : Press Stop and we good to go 😂
Can this work with Canon cartridges?
For my Canon cartridge I had to drill a hole in the top to refill. I just cover it with electrical tape. Works great. Been using the same cartridge for over a year, printing daily.
Boy o boy, what a damn racket... Can you explain why you need the extra empty cartridges? How does the damn printer know you put the same cartridges back in?
The carts have a (smart card) similar to your SIM card, it stores information (among other things) about how it’s used when it was used and if it was originally depleted or not. So you’re paying for this technology not for the ink.
Software tracks the UNIVERSE. Nothing is hidden. We have the illusion of privacy.
@@xruud24 It might depend on printer model, but mine just straight up refuses to pull ink from a cartridge once it has been flagged as empty.
It works not letting them deplete! Fill periodically. Of course they always show “low”, but it works. “Depleted” means the jig is up for that cartridge.
Should weigh a newly bought cartridge too.
Ditch the cartridges and get an ecotank. You'll save hundreds of dollars.
