Rather than the Friday Night Chit-Chat I think I will change the pace a bit with a detailed video on the subject of Cart Chips!
Ever wonder what those little chips attached to your Ink Cartridges Do or Don't do?
Do they really help you to control ink levels and prevent problems or are they simply there to prevent you from using 3rd party products or options?
This is gonna take about 30+ minutes because it deserves that amount of time so please bear with me!

Jose, very interesting and informative video! Thanks. Hope I can continue using P.C. inks on my carts. My OEM carts are now close to the half way point, so it won’t be long I will start using my refilled second set of carts.

Printer companies could discourage refilling by reducing the cart costs 30-40% but then they don’t make as much money.
Or charge a lot more for the initial Printer like with the L series the Eco Tank ones and CANON equivalent Tank Printers. Then they can sell you cheaply priced crappy quality bulk dye inks to print with that doesn't even come close to the REAL inks you pay $$$ for. That would not work for serious Photo Printing folks like us.
@@cheo1949 they would make money because people would buy the genuine cartridge instead of the knock off one if they were competitively priced. This increase in sales would result in more revenue for the companies. They only cost pennies to make. But i would also like to know why my printer cartridges are always empty when i only print a few pages a month. I am constantly changing them all the time but getting very few pages out of them. THIS IS WHY I DONT LIKE INKJET PRINTERS. this is less than 30 pages of regular text and some simple small graphics and the cartridge is empty. constantly empty. I went back to my dot matrix because it just works and a $10 ribbon lasts over a year. No print head cleaning no streaks like in laser printers when the drum or cartridge decided it will fail early. none of the BS. it just works period!! and for a 24 pin printer it is really good quality.

What an inclusive and in depth review and analysis of the state of home printing and the scam of OEM printer manufacturer ink cartridge controls! As you state early in your video that with some printers, depletion of one of the 3 primary colors being empty, resulted in NO PRINTING. This was my case, even though I had a nearly brand new black ink cartridge, - not even black and white was being allowed. I've had this printer for several years and believe (if I recall correctly) that with one of the previous firmware versions, I was able to print with some of the colors being depleted. It would not be in Hp's (or apparently others) best interest to advertise this fact to consumers as we would feel too bound to buy their expensive $100 cartridge sets every time we ran out of ink.

I recently started refilling the cartridges in my Canon Pro-10. I'm refilling with OEM inks to top off partly full cartridges. I'm replacing the 5 colors in the right block or in the left block at the same time to minimize wasted ink. Then I extract ink from the partly full cartridges I removed to bring one cartridge back to full. I'm using the Redsetter to reset the chips. When I put 3 of these refilled cartridges back into the printer and tried to run a bottom plate cleaning, the printer gave me a message that those cartridges weren't Canon cartridges (not true!) and refused to run the cleaning. Have you run into this issue before or do you have any suggestions? I'm trying to eliminate a problem with some edges of the print having small black spots on them - I thought the bottom plate cleaning might help.

Do you by any chance have, or you know any folks who's got, a resetter for canon MG3620 or an OEM ink that can work for the cart? I got one that i have refilled with third party ink, but unable to print a single page. Any advice?
I have a Epson Work Force Pro WF-4830 printer and it would not take refillable ink cartridges or OEM cartridges at all. I am trying to find a way to overcome that. Thought of the resetting the chip on the Cartridges and trying to find a good way get it to work. Any suggestion or recommendation would be much appreciated.
I have a canon Pixma 3120 printer. It uses 243/245 ink and I think 246 for color. What would be the better option- taking it to get refilled or get some kind of eco tank printer? thanks

Nice presentation! Where can I find a chip resetter for Canon 210/211 & 275/6?
I've been using Canon MX320 then "upgraded" to MX360 for 7€ (yup, got a barely used one from a liquidated company). I have 4 litres of cheap Chinese CMYK ink for document printing and the PG-512 and CL-513 will last me almost 2 years when properly kept for about 100 pages per month. With the printhead on the cartridge printhead failure is no big deal. This way I get cheap ink, cheap print per page, cheap printhead replacement at the cost of slow printing, manually refilling my cartridges and replacing them every few years.
With all the real world factors such as cleaning cycles, cartridge prices and what not I get some 15000 pages out of my 24€ black ink which amounts to some 0.02€ to 0.03€ per single black and white page which is just insane compared to the scam that is being ran on the average consumer.
Maybe you can help? I have a Lexmark Genesis S815 that I LOVE… what type of refill/chip reseter do I need???

Depending on the printer type, some only go by time, so after a set time, the cartridge indicator shows that it needs to be changed, regardless of how much ink/toner is in the cartridge. There is some firmware that override it for some models. Need more people to develop chip overrides.
You stated the Canon Pro 10 cartridges are awesome to refill and how Pro one and 1000 are single use chips which is controlled by firmware.
So does that mean if you purchase a Canon Pixma Pro-10, that one should never update the firmware for fear that it may change the acceptability of refilled cartridges?
Yes. Never upgrade firmware if you are a refiller.

Now that I've never encountered. From whom did you but these carts? And you forgot to mention the printer.
Canon printer ink is liquid osmium. No wonder many are preferring the Epson ET series models, even though they might not be of such high end as the Canon Imageprograf models. Ink is relatively inexpensive, even for dye ink, with the ET models. But with careful profiling, an Ilford Galerie semi-gloss or smooth gloss papers, decent results can be obtained. As of today, Nov 12 2020, the ET series Epsons are still in production. I am tempted to buy a few and never open the boxes until needed, warranty be damned!
Hi Jose, would you please answer a question for me I have only started printing at home for a short while, I bought myself the pro100, I bought myself the refill set from OCTOINKJET here in the uk.
My question is,Do I have to flush them before refilling, please forgive me if I posed the question wrong.
You do not. But you need to use a clean flushed modified cart for the YELLOW ink. Also swap the ORIGINAL Yellow CLI-42 chip to it before using unless the pre modified cart is already a cli-42. The reason is that CLI-8s are the ones usually being made available for this swap. Those chips will of course not be recognized. Martin from Octoink claims it will not cause a problem but I respectfully disagree.

Whats your oppion for the HP APP? Which primarily underscores the ink level as the means to reorder thus claiming no or low ink levels. I run HP 5055

You mean direct to garment or DTG? I think that C88 is not meant for that but I could be wrong. Anyway I've zero experience with that type of printing. But if you mean you will be sublimating to polyester fabric then I would buy inks from CONDE or Sawgrass. Carts you can buy from any reputable vendor as they will be about the same regardless the source.

Sublimation inks. They are special and unique and not at all like regular Photo inks.

Even if there was how would you refill those carts? It would possibly work for auto reset chips found in the refillable carts.
But to answer your question yes. I think you just need an EPSON 9 pin resetter.
hello Jose, My problem is that after installing Epson xp330 on my laptop, it asked for upgrading of which i unfortunately press yes. after the upgrading the printer always shows that the cartridge is incorrectly installed whether there is an ink cartridge in the printer or the cartridge is removed, what must i do though the printer has a continuous ink tank
That's what happens and why I say never update firmware. I'm afraid you are stuck.
Roll back the update or uninstall and reinstall and pass on the update.
Hello Jose, Do you have a chip resetter for Epson WF-4734? I bought some that were expired (unknown at the time as seller didn't disclose that).
I do not sell any merchandise. All I can suggest is to look on EBAY. Are you talking about OEM WF-4734 carts? Can you even refill those? What do you mean expired? That has nothing to do with chips.

I am not sure. I don't have that printer.
Not too long ago I found a company on amazon that had aftermarket cartridges same as the small one in your hand had refill plugs on top with self resetting chips even had matching epson ink . well the self resetting chips worked for a short while witch had me having to manually checking levels from time to time. But so far they have been absolute champ other then the checking levels and the printer has never refused them yet. No special tools to refill just run down to rural king and buy a set of horse needles for $ 4 .
Refillable cartridges work well on Epson printers but not recommended for Canon. I'm glad you have had some good results
@@cheo1949 yes they have been wonderful for my epson ,In fact i`m refilling ink now as I caught the reply. I was looking at the company name witch I keep in the bow so as when I need to repurchase because I`ve had this ink long enough to see that it does meet it`s claims as epson color match and quality.

I bought my ink from -- Gigablockshop still has for $19 but thats for #98 epson , there are lots of cartridges on amozon some refill most remanufactured with full ink pretty cheap but main thing do the colors match so the software will give correct prints . I took a chance on the brand I bought and paid off.
Omg. Latest Epson has lots of workaround behind the chips and sensor. Wish I get programer modified the firmware.

Would it matter resetting a color chip seeing how the colored cartridges need to be full also to just print with black ink?
Yes! Printers do not just print with "black" ink. They use ALL the colors along with black to create black! It's called compositing.
@@cheo1949 I remember when there wasn't such a thing as a "color printer" and I remember my printer printing black with no problems. Interesting how it needs blue, yellow or red to print black, first for me.

just measure the sensor when full it will probably just have a set resistance then wire in a smd resistor then it will work forever

the chip is there to try and stop non oem ink being used. it knows what colour it is and tells the printer its genuine. it gets the ink level from the printer which knows how much is is being used. some chips cannot be reset and the ink level is not displayed or is rejected.
How long until the chips authenticate with the printer with a challenge/response protocol using a secret code known only to the manufacturer and buried deep within the silicon?

Get a new one. If it uses chips then the chip might not be good. Is it is NOT Original then that might be the problem.

I have a Epson xp-4105 and they seem to have closed all the holes in using other carts other than theirs. I even bought some compatible remanufactured Epson carts and they will not work either. We need a class action lawsuit on Epson like they did with Lexmark.

No. The only PRO100 source is oem carts for the PRO100. No other printer uses that ink.

Do you think there will come a day when both Canon and Epson feature chips that can never be reset? This in self would render refilling pointless because the printer would just show empty cart status and wouldn't print even with the cart full of ink. Would Canon/Epson legally even be allowed to allow only their OEM ink carts to be used?
Well that is here now. All they have to do and what they have already done with our P800 is to demand that it sees a new color I D#. Done! No more resetting. You can't reset many printers already. None of the current new Canon and Epson Professional printer chips can be reset. Being able to use their party single use chips in printers like the Canon Pro1 or Pro1000 is different than being able to reset the same chip. Currently that is not possible.
Not in Australia, our consumer law will not allow it.
Not in the EU. That would be warding off third party competition on consumables and would fall foul of the antitrust laws. Imagine if car manufacturers could force you to refill your tank only at their authorised filling station network, at their predetermined prices....

The Pro100 after USA rebates. Otherwise not really unless you are not talking dedicated photo printer. If so I can't help since I do not use regular non photo printers.

Then search for a model that fits your need and then look up if the model is even supported for third party products. Many new models come LOCKED from use of refillable carts and only allow OEM.

Thousands! So no. Your theory will not work. HOWEVER....the printer ONLY records TWO codes for the Waste Ink Maintenance Carts. So you can reset and repack a set of two carts and indeed rotate those. Just NOT the ink carts!
The chip "counts" the number of pages printed. It doesn't measure ink levels. That is why it may indicate an empty cartridge but still have ink inside.
Thats not true on PRO Photo printers. Maybe on cheaper AIO document office style printers.

Well people start developing open source printers with no lock on inks from those mechanical parts.
It happened in PC operating system forming Linux ,happened with mobile devices like custom ROMs of android now librium 5, it will happen with printers too

Another thing that needs to be considered is the planned obsolescence after say a year or two they start letting faults happen that keeps you from using the printer and the printer just gets stupid and becomes a piece of junk. My cannon TR8520 is now a piece of junk.

As far as I know, no one! You have to use an EPSON Printer and use refillable carts with the correct set of Black and gray value inks. You can not just print with BLACK inks. go here wwww.inkjetmall.com Look at Piezography inks. But you will not be able to print with your normal driver as you will need a RIP software!

@@cheo1949 I put new cartridges in and it says: "You need new cartridges, your cartridges aren't recognized, etc. Yesterday I put Authentic Epson Cartridges in, and the place where it says charging, it said Epson, and that's it, but I could hear it charging. When it was done, I printed out a couple of things and the ink was really faded and light. I bought these cartridges from a big box store. (Not Walmart) I had bought ink from Walmart that was supposed to be an upgrade for my printer. I tried everything to get my printer to except the ink. I ended up taking them out and then throwing them out. I had a Canon printer that I bought for around $60.00. It ALWAYS accepted the new ink cartridges, last longer, and printed awesome. This Epson, even gives me error messages when I load new paper! It is a total piece of junk from the time I bought it. I wish I had taken it back. It is so frustrating.
Yah but even genuine epson cartridges the printer sometimes doesn’t recognize as genuine. Or it will tell me that a brand new genuine epson cart is unrecognizable.
That would happen if you reset that OEM chip. So far I have never had a problem with OEM cart recognition as long as I have tampered with the chips.
@@cheo1949 Strange. It happens to me about 15% of the time on my WF-3640. Genuine Epson. More often it will say I am putting in non-genuine cartridge - might ruin your printer do you want to continue blah blah? Then there have been a few times it flat out refuses to accept it because it says unrecognizable.
That is weird. So far I've never had that happen to me. Knock on wood!
Maybe if the company’s stopped making the cartridges so high tech to prevent refilling they wouldn’t cost so much to make since that’s there claim

Thanks but I found it in another one of your video's. The reason I asked is because you said in the video that you would post a link in the description. Also I don't own the 1000 yet I have a Pro-1 that I got of of ebay for $100 that was damaged in shipping looks like crap but I got it working. Also bid on what was listed as a pro-100 for $100.00 new in original box. it turned out to be a pro-10. I emailed the guy and told him about the mistake but he told me not to worry about it.

someone should come up with a way to stop the printer writing to the chip cover the right line on the cartridge. or someone should make a rightable chip and sell them
ON MANY EPSON Printer there is something called CHIPLESS Firmware. You install and all levels remain FULL. Now you have to constantly add ink.
It’s a big con. The ink cartridge costs nothing to make 25c they sell them for loads. It’s just a big con .

If you buy two or three packs of replacement inks for your printer, then you have already paid more for them than you did for the printer and that does,nt include the cost of it going into landfill, because the pads that are used to collect the ink that was used to clean itself and that does not include the ink left in the cartridge because the printer told you that they nerded to be replaced. It needs to be stopped and we need to stop purchasing the printers and the inks, then maybe just maybe once they have been dealt a blow in the profits that they recieve, maybe then they will listen. Something will happen or they may go bankrupt, we as consumers hold the key, all we need to do is use it.

It’s highway robbery, I can’t believe I spend 25-30$ on a black ink cartridge, and it only lasts for maybe 150 copies if I’m lucky. I know there’s ink still in the cartridge because I took one apart after it said it was empty. I’m getting tired of these big companies taking advantage on consumers the way they do. I just bought a 3,000$ Samsung tv, and now it’s garbage after a year. Screw these companies.

'Planned obsolescence' is another big word that conceals a worse concept: planned *DURABILITY* that is. Landfills are getting full to the brim with electronic stuff designed to fail soon and for good, while waste taxes are going through the roof.

I baught canon pixma mg2577s printer. After refulling catridge for 3 times it never works it isn't clogged. They program their printer not to work after the cartridge is finished. Such an ass**le comapany an Japanese firm without Japanese heritage. From this day I take an outh never to buy Japanese products I will only buy indigenous made in India products, I own japanese brand motorcycle,my cousins own japanese carsetc . The thing is japanese cars have good mileage but its cheap while Indian Tata, Mahendra companies cars are perfect.If Indian brand Tata car whom produces jaguar,Range Rover Land Rover hits an Japanese Suzuki of same price the suzuki gets squashed like rotten tomatoes while Tata just get mikor scratches. I won't buy any japanese shitts.
