Sister Loreto left her birthplace Ireland over seventy years ago to become a teacher in Chennai, India. She has chosen to live out the rest of her years in India as the last Irish Nun in Chennai out of 131, never to return home. This is her story in her own words.
“India once nearly killed me, so I was lucky to be asked back there to make another film. It was a golden opportunity to ask India some big questions. I’m not very religious but I was invited to follow this beautiful woman Sister Loreto Houlihan, and found her deep love of India and it’s people, absolutely heart warming and deeply resonant. Sitting in front of her and listening to her talk, was like being warmed by the hearth of an Irish fireplace on a rainy day, hearing stories as she put it, from ‘the long ago’. I learned from her, that India and it’s culture retains more of the life she left seventy years ago in Ireland, than the country of her birth today, and so she chooses to live the rest of her days in India, for that natural familiarity.” - Myles O’Reilly

I heard that Sister Loretto passed away yesterday. She was my Grade 1 teacher in 1966 and I still remember her. RIP Sister.

Service to Mankind...Thy name....so lucky to have seen every day for years together and sometimes standing so close or sometimes holding her pink palm and looking up at her face imbibing all that grace in her smile....RIP our Dear Sister
This is a brilliant presentation and it moved me to tears. Having Irish roots myself, i remember my mom taking me to visit Sr.Loreto quite a few times.
For those who haven’t mer her, I’d say you couldn’t watch this film without shedding a tear. She was a blessing to everyone. May sue Rest in eternal peace.

"The inside is more important than the outside" is what she said to me when she prepared me for my First Holy Communion. I was only in Grade Three, but she managed to impress upon me the importance of listening to the voice of God at all times... She lives a life that will always inspire me...

Beautifully scripted... so well done... the colours and moods of India that dear Sr Loretto would have imbibed and lived with/ May her dear soul rest in peace. I remember her at the Prayer meetings at Good Shepherd Convent in the early 80s. God blessed her with a tremendous, long and impactful life!
