Hey, I know this is an old video but thanks for making it! There are a few tricks in here you did that I learned and I appreciate you taking the time to make this video.
I made a newer video w a few updated techniques, especially the post notching. If you look through the videos you’ll find a coop made w a pallet wood exterior. Check out that build if you have some time 👍
Excellent design. Thanks for all the work to put this together. Liked the look so much that I down loaded your plans and built one like yours. My cost were around $650 for the coop. $820 for fenced in chicken run, chicken food, accessories and chickens. Lots of fun so far. Thanks
I announced to my husband I’m getting some chickens today, his response was, I guess I have to build you a coop then. I said I wanted a 4x4 coop, I opened RUclips and low and behold your video was suggested. Such a great design and video. 🙏 thank you.
If you have a chance, watch my build long video for the coop w a pallet wood exterior. There’s a new and improved method for doing the notch cuts on the 4x4 posts.
I like everything about this coop except the hinged roof on the nesting boxes. I made my nesting box roof a solid piece, mostly because after doing commercial roof repair I see a bunch of problems possible with it, and then made the back of it (on the outside) fold out downward to access the nests for egg collecting and cleanout. The coop isn't finished yet, since it hasn't stopped raining here for the last month, but the next time I have two+ days of sun, it'll *finally* be done. Nice work on the video!👍
Since you stayed 'til the end, so did I! ...And I'm glad I did. Excellent, detailed video that contains LOTS of tips and shortcuts for the beginning woodworker/DIYer.

Great job, both on the coop build and in the way you made it relatively straightforward for those of us with only rudimentary carpentry/construction skills. Thank you.

Thank you Sir for posting this. I will be using your plan out of many I have seen. Excellent job with the video, best explained so far and a very solid construction job.
Hey everyone, the greatest success that I have ever had was by using the coop magic tactic (i found it on google) definately the most useful course that I've followed.
Thanks for sharing your crafty ness ❤love the notches ❣️❣️🔥❣️❣️ One suggestion - drop down door to fetch eggs on the back in stead of pull up door on top. Coax you won’t have syco birds they will be calm and no leaks from rain. 😮 but I Absolutely love your design thank you for sharing your build your amazing❤
THANK YOU! You have such a perfect, casual voice for this. I learned so much. Key points for me were to load the weight on notches instead of screws. I will do this with 2 treated 2x6's sandwiched together using the inner boards top edge as the support. I don't like 4x4's with their cracks. You also mentioned the importance of sizing the roof sheeting to match the frame perfectly, definitely noting that. I really love the nice pics of your roof design. I do wonder why you didn't put the last two center 48's attached to the load bearing boards though. Maybe it has to do with the roof sheeting? My idea is for deep liter, and to have all the maintenance at one end so I have less snow to shovel. Have a wall sized door which opens to have two interior stacked nest boxes in mid, with water on one side and feed on the other. Above this two foot section will be a little storage. Because the roof will be slanted to the side like yours, vent space will not be affected in the main hen house interior.
Just finished a slightly modified version of your coop. I will email you some pictures for your flickr page. I've done a ton of surfing about chicken coops and I have to say your video was the best and most helpful. We get our baby chicks this weekend! My 7 and 8 year old girls are super excited.
It's not like I would ever build the coop you built, but it was a very nice coupe and I would use this video more as a guideline to build my own coup. I thought the coop was very well thought out and very well built. Thank you so much for the content.
You're welcome. Your video was well done and the design was easy to follow. I made one mistake-location not level/perfect and my siding panels didn't quite match on one corner especially. MY FAULT, shoulda made sure it was really really level when I added platform
I’ve been watching dozens of coop building videos. This was the best I’ve found! Thanks so much for such clear explanations and video footage of each step. This was extremely helpful. I really appreciate all the tips you shared too. I’ve been trying to learn how to notch out the 4X4s. Your explanation was the best. Thanks again!
Thanks! I actually have a new way of notching 4x4 which you will see near the beginning of this video. It makes a much cleaner cut. Chicken Coop: Step-by-Step Build 2.0 (Long Version with Commentary) ruclips.net/video/56FA-STOZKw/видео.html
Good job . I do have some thing I'll like to add . When making the walls you should make a box and put your studs in it, screw the suds from top and bottom . Then put the walls in and you can screw then in on the sides and floor .
Agree with some of the other comments here...best one I've seen, wonderfully detailed video that is easy to follow and understand - with some pretty awesome tips thrown in to make the build easier and more functional. I am looking forward to giving this a try... Thank you so much! Wow!
Love this design..., best build I have seen for awhile without all of the crap. Love the fact that you put in all of the mistakes aswell. Huge thumbs up.
Thanks!! In my newest build, I have removable floor panels in the nesting boxes. Makes for easy cleaning- you just have to put a container under there and sweep the bedding out.
I’ve been planing and stressing out over my coop build since I got my chicks two months ago. They’re sick of sleeping in a crate in my basement so thanks for making this seem less overwhelming. I’m using pallets so your other video was also very helpful. I’ve watched about 20-30 videos and this one is the best. Would you consider posting a update of the coop with chickens living in it with any comments about how it’s doing now? Thanks again.
Thank you for this video and plans. I recently just finished my eagle project which i did a chicken coop. Without these plans i don't know where i would be right now. Thank you
Thank you for sharing all your experiences in making this coup. The fact that you shared the plans as well is awesome, I will be sending you a PayPal gift, many thanks.
Thank you so much for your time and trouble in making and posting this video. It is so very well done and breaking the whole thing down into steps makes it feel very doable.
My wife bought 5 little chicks a week ago. So, I've been tasked with building a coop. I've pretty much settled on this one. I just started pricing out the materials and the lumber costs right now are killing me. I know they are elevated everywhere currently. With just the lumber and all the screws alone I'm already at 470 dollars. I don't really have much choice due to the time limit I'm under but I have a feeling this thing is going to cost me a thousand dollars by the time I'm done. Still, I figure if I'm going to do it I want to do it right. Thank you for providing this video, plans, and material list.
Yeah the price of lumber is ridiculous! I built a workbench a few months back, and it cost me a hundred bucks. You can save money by cutting corners, but like you said, it’s better to do it right. Lmk if you have any questions as you build
@@E_Fleming Thanks for the reply. I just picked up the lumber today. I'll try to gather the rest of the materials during the week and then maybe start building next weekend. I'll send you pics when I'm done.
This was amazing anyone can overhaul this coop and make there own masterpiece your video and stuff was a blessing. I am raising chickens and ducks and this video was super helpful. God bless happy new year
There is a missing part. You build the base frame and put the floor, then you build the walls frame, and the you start to build and install the roof. After you build the nest spaces, but we never saw you fixing the wall sides. It's a very good work, not on my level, but it showed the logical way to build and I appreciate. Thank you
I didn’t show every single part of the build, or I would have had 30-40 hours of footage to go through. Hope it at least gives you a good idea of process.
+Kristopher Luke Hey Kristopher, I'd love to add some pictures of your coop on my flickr page if you are willing to send some my way. My email address is listed on the plans. Congrats!
Best set of plans + tutorials I've seen online for chicken coops. Heck, for any project. Above and beyond!!! Big props for putting all these resources together! Can't wait to start my coop this weekend :-)
Hey. I know this is an old video, but thank you so much for sharing! I just got some baby chicks & looking to buy a coop but they're so expensive (not too sturdy either). Your instructions are so simple that I can build one myself that's more sturdy than the ones I saw in the store. Thank you!
Nice build! I appreciate you taking the time. Lots of good ideas here for the coop I am about to put together. I like the ease of cleaning out the nesting box idea. That is great! Thanks!
I've been watching as many videos as I could find, building the coop and your's is #1. I was planning on purchasing a kit from Carolina Coops but the $2800 price tag is a bit steep, even though they use alot of Douglas Fir and the include a spacious attached run. I think using your awesome walk through, that I may build my own the coming Spring. Thanks!
This is a great video and very well detailed and explained. I had watched your other video of your coop and loved it so I decided to watch this one too. Tried looking at the plans and will go back and look at all the photos but it's late and being more visual, I wanted to watch the video first. Although I must admit, for someone who's never built anything before it is a tad overwhelming. This doesn't have to do with you, it's very well explained, it's just here I had thought it was "only" screwing pieces of wood together and "not that hard" and it appears there is a lot more to it than previously thought.. LOL I'm sure it's not as difficult as it seems though and if I was actually out there trying it I may pick it up faster.
A great tip for buy shingles for odd projects... If you take a stroll down the shingle isle at Home depot you'll find that there are many bundles of shingles that are torn open for one reason or another. At Home Depot an open pack of shingles is %50 off regardless if there are missing shingles or not, this is perfect for projects like this since most people only need a couple packs and it doesn't matter if they are miss matched... :)
Love this video have not been abel to find a coop like this one, its almost exactly like the one I will be building. However it will have a side slide coop door instead of the Guillotine chicken door beautiful coop.
What a generous person you are to spend all this time and effort into helping others, thank you! I'm eager to make this coop. I'm not a 'builder' typically so please forgive me if this is a really stupid question. I can't seem to figure out at what point you move the structure over to its permanent location (would it be too heavy/awkward at the end? Do you build it where you plan on locating it?) and a follow-up question to that... does it need to be anchored down somehow to the ground with cement posts or something? We live in an open area so it gets very windy. Thanks again for your help!
Not a dumb question. You probably want to build this in its permanent location. I ended up selling the coop that I made for this video. With three people we managed to load it onto a trailer... but it wasn't easy. In terms of anchoring, dig a down about a 12-15 inches for each "leg" of the coop. and put a bag of quikcrete in each hole. Thatll add about 320 pounds of weight. If you want to make sure that the post doesn't pull out of the concrete, you could add a couple screws to each post before adding the concrete. (the screws will stick out and and make the posts less slippery, if that makes sense).
You don't have to be sorry brother. You did a great job. I am from the same profession, i have my own furniture and joinery mill here in Kashmir. You did only one thing wrong and that is compromising with safety. Hope you will understand. Stay safe. 👍
Thanks for the response, and I understand. I should definitely be wearing glasses and ear protection. Is there a specific part of the build that I could have done more safely?
@@E_Fleming If you want to cut any piece of tin or any other metallic material you should always wear a safety gloves. Because the roof tin in your video seemed very sharp.
In the process of finishing a coop based on this design - though I doubled the dimensions, and made a 4'x8'. I want to confirm that the channels milled out of the 4"x4"s are in fact easier/quicker with a circular saw. We tried it both ways specifically to see which was faster, and while the router was in fact leaving a prettier cut, the saw was much more efficient, and I challenge someone to come out and tell me which beams were routed which way.
I did my 4x4 notches with a miter saw, but I believe a circular saw would have been better (you can set a specific depth and not worry about overcutting). If you got a nice look with a router, go for it! Pressure treated wood tends to be so wet and sappy, it often gunks up a router.
Could you just ask your wife if you could just come here and build this for me !! LOL I love this coop and guess im gonna attempt to do this on my own. Wish me luck :)
If my chickens saw this they'd take me to court. They call two old 2'×2'×3' shipping crates (that dont have tops) turned and stacked onto of each other and screwed together home, lol. That end of their run has an old truck bed cover for its roof. I live out in the country though. Nice henhouse!
I did a chicken coop 2.0 video- a new build w a couple new features / construction techniques. That coop has removable nesting box dividers and a trap door in the bottom for real easy cleaning. Check out the long version w commentary or the short version. If nothing else, check out my new way of notching the posts. It’s the first segment in those videos.
Do you remember the angle of the cut for the nesting boxes. I am doing the roof differently (covering and entire run which also includes the coop) and sloping it away from the nesting boxes so the snow and ice won't pile up at the nesting box. Anyway - the tip you give in the video about the angle is that it is the same as you figure out for the room. I can't see any dimensions in the plans that would allow me to calculate the angle. I helped my kid with trig the other day and I think I could actually do it!If you can't recall the angle (to set the chop saw), i'll just eyeball it and should be good. Thanks (Great job btw and thanks for this!)
Has been very helpful, though my nest door and main door warped right away, so I had to incorporate some extra fastening at the "open edges" to hold them down flush.
flemwad18 I should say, building an actual frame for the large door would help with warping, but you have me thinking about nesting box door solutions. hmmm.

I am almost done with this build!! walls and roof go up this week! Thank you for your detailed explanation! I will definitely be donating
Kayle Rivers how much did everything cost?
Cost ?
I wish I saw this a month ago! I would have rethought a few parts of my build! Nice!
You're a really wonderful person to share like this. Which I could have made one myself. Well done, thanks for sharing. Blessings!
Thanks!
I love it. I think every back yard should have one. Perfect for a few hens.
An outstanding video I have looked at a lot I do mean a lot so I can build a coop, this is by far the best, GREAT JOB !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like all of your hard work and attention to detail. Good job.
I'm super excited about this, I have already bought a prefabricated one but this looks nicer and well worth it, thank you!
You can use a torch or a blow dryer to heat the vinyl to form it around the wood better.
You did a great job on the coop and on explaining each step.
Great Job Mr Fleming
con pochi utensili, hai fatto un capolavoro.
Great video. Thanks for teaching us how to build this chicken coop!
Bless you your a good man. Many thanks for sharing.
Excellent vid for us DIY types who ain’t carpenters!
Thank you! That was my primary goal!
Thank you for sharing. this is a professional job. Great video.
Great presentation!!
Thank You!!! I really appreciate this video. Now I can show it to my son and a family friend, so it will be easier to build my coop.
Very nice little chicken cook I'm going to do one just like this
Thank You!! I build a 6x5x6 H and just prime the plywood but I really do think I will go back now and lay the linoleum
Very extensive tutorial. Very similar to what I plan to do.
I think you are doing a great job, thank you for this video. God Bless
Love this video have not been abel to find a coop like this one, its almost exactly like the one I will be building. However it will have a side slide coop door instead of the Guillotine chicken door beautiful coop.
thank you my friend every spring I do a major project for my yard and this is the one for this spring thank you for sharing
I just saw your generous donation. Thank you so much! Have a great Easter and please let me know if you have any questions while you build
Ah...also please let me know if you find any mistakes in plans so I can make changes for others.
william shidal Did you get around to starting your coop this weekend? How's it going?
going very well
flemwad18 2 more weekends and im done easy to follow plans and directions
Great video!
Best video.Thank you so much.
On my to do list for memorial day weekend. Fingers crossed!
Good luck, and brace yourself for the crazy cost of wood. I believe it will be at least double what it costs on the supply list.
Great job. You are a real Craftsman!
Muy buen trabajo , te felicito
Esa casita para gallinas está bien construida y sólida
Lo único que veo es la escalera para las aves. La pisada es muy grande para ellas. También faltaría otra ventana para ventilación
Pero muy buen trabajo
Bendiciones hermano
👍🙏
By the way this is the most easy and the one I'll build thanks to you
What a generous person you are to spend all this time and effort into helping others, thank you!
How much did you get for the coop?
Flemwad18 you did an awesome job on the coop and the video. Thank you very much for sharing.
Really enjoyed you! Even your Squinty sun face! Thanks for the video!
@@E_Fleming
If you want to cut any piece of tin or any other metallic material you should always wear a safety gloves. Because the roof tin in your video seemed very sharp.
Yeah, I think I even commented on that in the video. Really not sure why I wasn’t wearing gloves! I have them and the tin was definitely sharp!
Your video has given me hope. I think I can build this. I have some of the tools so that will help excellent tutorial. Bless u.
Nice build thanks for sharing God bless.
Great video. Lots of detail. Thank you!
Great video, thanks for that......thinking the lumber will be likely 3x what it was back then......lumber price is so high!!
Yeah it’s crazy!! I built a simple workbench in the fall and it cost me a hundred bucks.
Could you just ask your wife if you could just come here and build this for me !! LOL I love this coop and guess im gonna attempt to do this on my own. Wish me luck :)
I will use these plans, thank you so much from Sweden
You are welcome! Best of luck and let me know if you have any questions.
If my chickens saw this they'd take me to court. They call two old 2'×2'×3' shipping crates (that dont have tops) turned and stacked onto of each other and screwed together home, lol. That end of their run has an old truck bed cover for its roof. I live out in the country though. Nice henhouse!
very good. some excellent tips.
Your voice is so relaxing
The four most important things in life are Subscribing, liking, watching the ads and of course finding the bunker.
Excellent, comprehensives.
Thank you so much for showing this!🐥🐥
Thanks for sharing
Great video! I will use many ideas from your build. Thanks!!!
Thanks (Great job btw and thanks for this!)
thank you for teaching off a building Chicken coop I already started another different.
Thank you so much, you did a gr8 job :)
Nice job, thank you for the great video.
Thank you. You are awesome, I appreciate all your info.
Muy bien maestro Fleming!
Very nice!
Has been very helpful, though my nest door and main door warped right away, so I had to incorporate some extra fastening at the "open edges" to hold them down flush.
Lonnie Lyman Interesting, I had the same issue with my nesting box door. I wonder if that could have been prevented somehow?
flemwad18 I should say, building an actual frame for the large door would help with warping, but you have me thinking about nesting box door solutions. hmmm.
