These are my favorite cars (f02), I've been researching, watching videos, reading forums for years, since 2017.
    A few things I've learned:
2008-2010, there was a class action lawsuit for the HPFP, extended the warranty for many
2012+ engine switched from N54 twin turbo to N55 single turbo
Transmission gremlins exist, makes it hard to pass smog, even if it runs smoothly. Transmission alsonhas separate computer in it, makes it challenging to repair
The only reason you should consider getting one is if you have extra time and income to spend. You can't just buy drive and go about your day with these cars like other non-European brands. You'll have to gather your thoughts every week or so, preparing and wondering what will fail soon or what part of the car you should focus on first, for maintenance.
I don't have that extra time and can't justify spending more than I have to for a car.
Also, stay away from 750s ( or thoroughly ppi them) as you'll have the same responsibility as the 740s but double the work and headaches.
If I had the time and made sense of the extra cash to spend on the caretaking, I'd choose a 2014 - 2015 740li. Unfortunately, theres not many large saloon cruisers of this class, let alone, non-european models to choose from. In a way it comes down to picking your choice of poison 😅
Good luck and I hope you won't regret your choice somewhere down the line if you do choose to pull the trigger on one.

Very interesting. I looked up this generation in my area. A lot of them are selling for less than expected. The 4.4 V8 engine has a bad reputation with cooling issues. I must say that is disappointing coming from BMW. I will say this is a beautiful car, a ‘saloon’ car. Thanks for the review! Can’t wait for the next one

N55 on 740i does not have any timing chain issue. timing chain guide need to be replaced if it is over 10 years old.

They don't built them like they used to. Nothing more expensive then a cheap luxury second hand car..

Stay away from all older BMW 7 series, they are nothing but problems.

You have the N63 engine which is a total failure. I have a 2015 with N63TU--> no issues. Cheers
