  • A quiet Saturday morning with my return at Plot 11 to do a time and motion study on the herringbone panels.
I'm looking forward to seeing the scaffold down and all this brick and cobble work on show.

It makes me upset that tattooed house bashers have more subscribers than him! He is a true master craftsman! Thank God (the Brick God) he decided to document his skills on here!

A interesting point you make. It says a lot about social media, and how fickle people can be.
There will always be a need for both types, and its good to document it all. I like the juxtaposition between the two.
Rob, will leave a great legacy of craft skills for future generations to enjoy and marvel at.

A standard set tile adhesive would be easier to stick them on I'd imagine. I have done a few kitchen decor walls with them, they can be very varied in sizes and drive you crazy. I used to use 10mm spacers or cut down door stop into small blocks but you usually need some wedges etc to take up the differences.

When they’re not balanced like that I like to flip/mirror the panel each time. I think I that looks best.

As always your attention to detail makes the job. You're a true craftsman. If you hadn't used "Grab & Bond" what other methods would you have considered using.

I'd prefer to use a flexible tile adhesive.

    Distant memory of the classroom/workshop.
Is the setting out board called a "Tracing Board?"
I can remember the plywood board painted white and we would set out arches etc.
Bricklayers have forgotten how to use the board but stone masons still use them.
Your video showed how it not only speeds up the process but eliminates small, un-sightly cuts.

Another great job, Rob. I'll be using a similar feature on the Tiny Barn project so watching with interest. Is the backer board a cement based board? Why do you prefer to use flexible tile adhesive? When grouting against the oak, how will it be sealed (as the oak is likely to expand/contract)?

    • @robsonger1
      @robsonger1  3 месяца назад

yes, it's a cement board. A flexible adhesive would allow thermal movement in the heat of summer and contraction in the colder months. The seal I put around the perimeter should hopefully prevent moisture from entering behind the board.

Are the backing panels screwed to timber battens, Rob?
Is there a way you could remove the backer board and work horizontally, lay all the slips so you dont need packers/spacers, and then bond and screw the panels back onto the framework behind once the slips have set?

A lot of prep involved but very worth it at the end.
Can’t believe in February it’s 3 years since we came down to visit .
    Cobble work looks amazing 👌🏼👍🏽🧱

Hi Rob, love your videos. I’m a young site manager working in Ireland and I was looking for some help. I’ve bricklayers due to start on site and I can’t seem to wrap my head around brick coordinating sizes ie CO-, CO and CO+.. I have the charts etc but just can’t seem to fully understand it and where each applies to. Would appreciate if you would be willing to explain over video/ skype? Thanks very much and apologies for the strange question ha

That’s looks another nice house mate😍 looks well!
How come you wet the bricks if you’re using ct1? And what you pointing it in lime putty?
Wedges might be a little easier maybe so you can see the brick more? Not telling you how to do it obviously cos you the man!😂👍 lovely job!

Hi Craig, we kept the brick slips dry throughout the summer when they were first cut so that they would be easier to lay, but after I tried to apply the adhesive directly to the back of the brick I noticed it just rolled off the surface and had no adhesion whatsoever, it was a layer of dust that laid on the brick. So I looked at the first ones that were already placed in the panel and they came off with very little effort. After dipping them they had a much better bond, so I kept with that.

@@robsonger1 yeah I guess it won’t stick to dust no matter how good ct1 is😂👍
Hey Rob do you ever use the tracer pencils? I’ve been on them a good year or 2 now I couldn’t change bk. save so much time, especially with what your doing intricate all time mate. There literally a game changer👍
