"Feeling the grip of the wheels pushing back against you of the pavement" This is some great adivce which was missing in most of the other helpful beginner videos out there. In the last few days I practised carving intensively and when I started to focus on the wheels pushing back through my feet, I got the hang of it. To me it almost feels as if the wheels are communicating with me through the pressure and let me know how I should handle the various types of pavement. Thank you Alex Hannigan, watching this video over and over again really helps me training the basics and I feel a lot more confident now when riding my longboard
nicely done. I am turning 58 next week and finally decided to buy myself the longboard I picked out several years ago that I have continually talked myself out of buying. I am very into roller skating and have been for 45 years or more.... I have a feeling this is actually going to make me better on my roller skates too.
I got the drop cat in May! Great board. Tons of fun. I put some 85 mm 83a Coumma wheels in it. It’s really fun now. The plow kings were to sticky for cruising around my neighborhood.
Awesome video! Skateboarding is one of those things where historically most people either jump into it out of chance, friends, or just want to do some sort of cool trick they saw someone do. Very few really focus on the basics or learning to ride it well. But with COVID, there's a huge demand and influx of people jumping into it alongside cycling. So this video is much needed! Plus, Alex and other Landyachtz team members have been scrutinized in the past for their lack of safety gear. But the reality is, helmet is the only real thing you need. The rest is just open space for scars with gnarly memories. This is kinda a redemption. Alex is amazing! McGangbang forever!
I'll be 38 this coming March. I bought a beer can board to learn on and it wasn't working out. I think I needed more flex in my board in order to learn and strengthen my core, so I bought a drop hammer, and it's getting delivered today. I've watched this video many times and I can't wait to put this to work on my new board! Thank you for doing this. The beer can board will serve as my rain board once I'm a confident rider.
11:23 is so true. I fell for the first time on my longboard yesterday, and I immediately got back on because I knew if I waited, I'd be too scared to get back on. I skated for another few hours after that

@@SheriJohnsonSJP oh sick! Good luck! I've been on the board a couple of times so far and I'll say it's a bit challenging but I can get on and off the board just fine now but I need to work on turning and properly stopping
@@frap7774 keep practicing and watching videos. I watched a few before I went out on mine for the first time yesterday. I was working on pushing, stopping and started working on turning. I think a lot of it comes from just getting comfortable on it which of course I too am working on.
Very helpful this all! Thanks a lot! I use to skate when I was a kid. Stopped some how when I was 12. Now I am starting again at the age of 53. Today for the first time. I understand I need patience and al lot of practice. Love it to feel the freedom of the board on my own... I don't care what people say. :) Thanks again!
Great video for beginners. I started skateboarding when I was 8, but no one taught this detailed, it was learn n go. I remember a friend of mine and I were going down a steep hill and hadn't learn to stop yet (your tip don't ride faster than you can stop -- wish I had that one). Well, she lost control of her board first, then I did. And we both flew into some parked cars (think dukes of hazard's but with a fail, body crash over top of car hood landing splat instead)... Anyways, still have a scar on my elbow like skrrrrreetch. Needless to say wish I had this video when I first learned. *also if you crash into someone's car while skateboarding no matter how you feel, get your board and run like hell before they come out and check their car alarm... luckily I *don't* think there was any damage to the car. Me, on the other hand, yessss.
I’ve been learning to skate (on my Tugboat!) for about a week and this has probably been the best tutorial I’ve watched. “Don’t go faster than you can foot brake” is definitely good advice, trust me hahah
Picked up a longboard about two days ago because I wanted something easier to ride than a penny and to pass the time to avoid going insane from being stuck inside from lockdown. I got a decent $90 40 inch board online and this video really helped me adjust to the change in size. I started practicing today and I'm super happy with the handling. It's so smooth and easy to ride, and the fresh air really helps open my mind back up. Something about timing a turn just right to carve near an edge is so satisfying. It's a serious workout on my feet. I'm glad for that, though. If it weren't for these Landyacht fellas, I wouldn't be out enjoying the cold morning breeze while I skate. You guys seriously inspired me. I hope to meet new people to skate with in the future and I really hope for the day I can get my first landyacht board. Much love, my dudes.
I just wanna say thank you for this video. I am a complete noob! No one around me skates and I always wanted to learn. I mostly wanna ride and this video has helped me so much. I’m having so much fun and your tips really helped a lot! Thank you!! ☺️☺️
Tbh. I wanted to skate when I was 13 but my board didn't roll easy enough, and when I had money I just forgot. But I got a new board that is really good for me. This video has helped me. I literally just practice standing on it in my room. This helped me with even that. This has been the most helpful video. Thank you 😊
Met you today Alex at the Denman “No Car Day” chatted about my old skate/surf days and how long it’s been. Ended up getting the ATV X Ditch Life… Love it! Now to change my goofy Mongo ways haha 😂🛹🤠😀
The Dinghy if anything is probably the easiest to slide on. Just do the same thing you would do on a normal board just not with as much momentum. Even a light kick with your back foot would break traction on a dinghy.
I just started today, and I didn't get the emphasis on foot placement. But thank God an older gentleman drove by, got out his van to give me some pointers. He rode around a bit on my board to see what I was working with then corrected my foot placement, told me to have my foot more sideways and to get more soeed before I get on. That Man saw a skater be born today. I was able to get on my board and ride around a bit. He told me that he was proud of me and to not give up. I was proud of myself! Blessed the man and his day and practiced for another 30mins. I was already out there for 30mins before tryna to just get on the dam thing. Thank God for that mans help, or I would've gone home earlier and defeated! Hopefully next time I can learn how to stop cuz that is my biggest problem right now and I got learn on somewhat of a slope. Hopefully this video can help with that cuz I was in the middle of watching it when that nice guy helped me out.
Great video learnt a great deal. just about to buy my first board since the 70's aged 54 so videos like this are invaluable as a lots changed since then.
that Golden rule - spot on. if you want people to hate skaters and cause you problems - ignore it. but if you treat the spot and people around you respectfully you wont have anywhere near so many problems like that
I went to RUclips to search on how to ride a cruiser because today I bought my first one and without realizing it I bought the same cruiser he has in the thumbnail of the video

Hi everyone, 43, just bought my longboard. Have wanted to get into longboarding for a while, so excited to try it out! So awesome to see that there's lots of older ppl like myself getting into it 😁

Great video with awesome tips and I appreciate the comments from the old dudes: 58 and just picked up a Drop Hammer to learn with my 12 year old daughter -- cheers!
I'm old af, and this is a perfect tutorial! The trick is, skate everyday! Or in my time, skate or...you know, if you know. Fun video! Love your boards too! My boy loves them, shows my age ;)
I just started skating again at the age of 32! After 12 years of not skating I watched this video before getting out there again and it helped me brush up on my skills. Not as rusty as I thought I would be. Now I'm bombing hills with my 10year old son!
just got a dinghy, ironically the exact one and graphic shown in the video. first time ever skateboarding. after this video i could push and kick turn but when i was proud and being cocky after kick turning for the first time i fell and ate sh LOL and i came back to the video and when i unpaused it alex said "when longboarding you are going to fall" such timing LMAO, btw i love the board 10/10 recommend for beginners or any skater
This has been actually most helpful! I am a complete beginner who would love to learn some tricks/longboard dancing, but so far i have problem with even keeping myself up on the board and riding straight. Thank you very much, I'll keep challenging myself and just riding more.
My mom just got me a long board and I’m trying to learn how to use it by going out often. This video was very helpful, thank you. It makes me want to try to develop my own style too
Honestly the helmet is under rated. So story time, my 16 year old self thought 'thats dumb and lame and no I'm not wearin no helmet' well. I ended up taking a nasty spill while goin pretty fast down a hill, hit my head real good. When I got up and got my bearings I realized I couldn't hear out of one of my ears. Definitely one of the scariest moments of my life. ALSO IF YOU'RE DOING SOMETHIN CRAZY DONT DO IT ALONE! I understand that some people might not have friends who ride, or they might like riding alone. But if you're gonna do something like bomb a hill or something, make sure you have someone else there. I got lucky and when I fell I was pretty close to my house, but if I had been even just two or three blocks further away I probably wouldn't have been able to make it house on my own.
I have spent about 1 year & a half learning to do some freestyle downhill on small hills. On Tuesday, I did my fastest, most fun & most technical carvey hill (probably reached about 20km per hour) - only to bail onto my head right at the end. 5 stitches later, I can't stress how important wearing a helmet is, it is not optional. Being overconfident leads to a lack of calm reasoning. Still had the most fun though, on my Landyachtz UV Bengal Tugboat!
thanks for this video! I bought my battle axe last month and I only know how to cruise with it but this showed me many practical things like carving and braking!!
I've been having a hard time learning foot breaking. As soon as I put my foot down I come to a complete halt, I can't figure out how to put less weight on that foot and slowly stop.
Practice balancing on your front foot while rolling at slow but comfortable speed on flat. As you get comfortable with that, just start letting your foot hang off beside you and instead of stepping onto that foot, just let it scrape the ground. Slowly begin shifting towards that foot little by little, you'll slow down to an eventual stop unless you pick that foot back up.
Start learning to control your balance on your front foot by pushing off and cruising for a bit without putting your foot on the board, then slowly lower back down to foot brake. Then push again and stop again. This will build up your front leg balance and foot braking ability. Practice it for 10 minutes each day then have fun as usual. Before you know it.. You'll be foot braking like a boss
start from a stand-still if that makes sense. use your foot to hold yourself at a stand-still and then slowly relieve the pressure off of your foot until gravity starts to pull you downhill.
and always keep your front foot at a slight diagonal when you are foot braking. you still might need to control your direction slightly even if you are foot braking
Just got my longboard in today and your video was really helpful. Your instructions were super clear and I was able to do just about everything you mentioned. Thank you so much!
Thanks guys for this video! 5th I’ve watched it! Went for my first session with the community here and I was super stoked!! Learned how to push and carve! We skated for 3 hours and I feel absolutely smashed.. need an ice bath! For someone whose never boarded ever, I was pretty happy with today! Thanks a bunch guys!

Got the drop cat a few months ago and it’s the best board I’ve ever ridden. U guys are the apple of longboards. QUALITY
Alex reminds me of Andy Dwyer from Parks and Rec
Its the laugh, very chris pratt
I'll be 38 this coming March. I bought a beer can board to learn on and it wasn't working out. I think I needed more flex in my board in order to learn and strengthen my core, so I bought a drop hammer, and it's getting delivered today. I've watched this video many times and I can't wait to put this to work on my new board! Thank you for doing this. The beer can board will serve as my rain board once I'm a confident rider.
No matter how many times I watch this, it just gets me even more hyped...
11:23 is so true. I fell for the first time on my longboard yesterday, and I immediately got back on because I knew if I waited, I'd be too scared to get back on. I skated for another few hours after that
I don't even longboard, I just like to see people happy on a board of their choosing. If you aren't having fun, then what are you doing?
Yes I'm starting to lose interest in video game y things like soda chips y candy y I'm starting to like vegetables a lot more before I liked vegetables y stuff but I didn't really want it but now I love it y candy is nice but I don't like it anymore I'ma try long boarding to have fun
Was just until I became a fireman that I began to have some interests. Now im cruising with my long board after 3 weeks watching these videos. Lavya Landyatchzz!
Just got my first ever longboard. Thanks for the tips! I hope im able to due well when i practice
me too..... looks like we are learning at the same time :)
@@SheriJohnsonSJP for sure, I will keep doing both of those things and definitely working on my confidence when riding the board
@@frap7774 I just posted a short from yesterday 😊
Very helpful this all! Thanks a lot! I use to skate when I was a kid. Stopped some how when I was 12. Now I am starting again at the age of 53. Today for the first time. I understand I need patience and al lot of practice. Love it to feel the freedom of the board on my own... I don't care what people say. :) Thanks again!
Exactly what I've been looking for. I'm making a longboard in my woodshop class and I want to be able to use mine
When the Aerobic Championship song came on, I lost it! Kudos team, kudos. 7:30
46 and got back ibto it a few years back - this video us great! Well helpful ta
Thank you!! ☺️☺️
This has been the most useful video to watch after watching a lot of beginner videos. It clicked for me with this video. Thank you!
This video is so good for beginners haha! Just got my board for my 21st birthday and I'm no small lad 🤣 this is gonna be one hell of a ride
Now this is a tutorial. Great job guys. I've been boarding for 10 yrs and still watched the whole vid
I had the green ebike with large side bags… the board fit haha 🤠
It's never too late to change!!!
Great video! Can't wait for the slide instruction, also please feature sliding with the Dinghy please.
Great video learnt a great deal. just about to buy my first board since the 70's aged 54 so videos like this are invaluable as a lots changed since then.
that Golden rule - spot on. if you want people to hate skaters and cause you problems - ignore it. but if you treat the spot and people around you respectfully you wont have anywhere near so many problems like that
Ty Parr playing as backgrond music makes this video pure gold even more.
I like how you swapped between all sorts of boards for the video. Made it clear that these are the general basics for all board types
I went to RUclips to search on how to ride a cruiser because today I bought my first one and without realizing it I bought the same cruiser he has in the thumbnail of the video
Pause at 5:16 when Alex says, "I love it!" He's mall grabbing!! and in the begining, he mentioned not mall grabbing. This is so funny. Keep up the great work LY!
Tugboat incoming this week, 38 and never stood on a board before! This video is great, thank you!
How’s it going so far? I really wanna get into skateboarding
@@eshwar6969 ive not hurt myself so far :D
Its difficult, more so than i imagined, but im getting there! I can cruise fairly relaxed but i dont dare do it when there is alot of traffic and such around as im not confident i can maneuver and/or stop securely enough yet!
The tip about putting your ankle against the board while foot braking is a life saver omg!
Ive been skating tech for over 20 years...why is this video so captivating!? Lolol
I LOVE that you guys used Stop Me if You've Heard This Song Before! And it's even MORE funny that its during the stopping part 🤣
Lol, this is actually a great light-hearted lesson on the basics on longboarding
I’m gonna start learning to skate tomorrow! My friend is teaching me and I’m so excited- he has a skateboard but I’m gonna buy a long board
could you please make a video about riding a longboard in the city? like how to get up small curbs etc
Got my first longboard today and had so much fun with it. I still need to practice a lot on my pushing and carving, but I'm so so happy and can't wait to skateboard more🥰!
Hi everyone,
43, just bought my longboard. Have wanted to get into longboarding for a while, so excited to try it out! So awesome to see that there's lots of older ppl like myself getting into it 😁
Been skating for 10 years and somehow I’ve still learned something new
I think u forgot to tell when to tight your trucks and what are the symptoms of lose trucks or tight trucks how to tight them correctly :) Some people have wobbles at 5mph bcs of lose trucks otherwise very good video keep the good work! :)
Just thrifted a LandYachtz crusier for 45$ at goodwill super excited to get into it
Just picked up a new dinghy blunt. Can't wait to try it out at the PNE parking lot. 😜
Now I'm bombing hills with my 10year old son!
omfg thank you so simple yet everything i needed to know
just got a dinghy, ironically the exact one and graphic shown in the video. first time ever skateboarding. after this video i could push and kick turn but when i was proud and being cocky after kick turning for the first time i fell and ate sh LOL and i came back to the video and when i unpaused it alex said "when longboarding you are going to fall" such timing LMAO, btw i love the board 10/10 recommend for beginners or any skater
I love this video! I'm just starting to learn at 31 :)
So confused but also happy I just watched a skateboarding video with patsy cline in the background, completely blew my mind
Sweet man! Great video, thanks for sharing the basics to get going safely and correctly, without bad habits, A+++++
This has been actually most helpful!
It makes me want to try to develop my own style too
Tutorial vids nice! Been waiting for these a while now
Honestly the helmet is under rated.
Wish this would’ve came out when I got my dinghy😂
I bought my first landyachtz skateboard and I am learning the basics. This video is made for me. Thank so much.
omg you released this video at the same time I got my first board

Lightly tap your "brake foot" don't set it down with any weight
start from a stand-still if that makes sense. use your foot to hold yourself at a stand-still and then slowly relieve the pressure off of your foot until gravity starts to pull you downhill.
and always keep your front foot at a slight diagonal when you are foot braking. you still might need to control your direction slightly even if you are foot braking
i love your vibe, it's like andy from parks and rec came alive, enjoyed every minute of the video ! thanks for this !
We need Carla to teach us some dance tricks next video
been spending quarantine learning how to power slide. learned a few tips from this video despite the experience i already had
Hahah lol the part of destroying your paint😂😂 genius lol but so true lol just skate it until you break it🤘🏼
53 years young and back on my Lush samba, awaiting delivery of my Carver thanks for sharing really good video
6:48 IM SORRY I CANT😭🤣🤣
Just got my longboard in today and your video was really helpful. Your instructions were super clear and I was able to do just about everything you mentioned. Thank you so much!
Bruh where was this filmed
Thanks guys for this video! 5th I’ve watched it! Went for my first session with the community here and I was super stoked!! Learned how to push and carve! We skated for 3 hours and I feel absolutely smashed.. need an ice bath! For someone whose never boarded ever, I was pretty happy with today! Thanks a bunch guys!
