Few extra tips as someone who’s been skateboarding since I was 13 and am now teaching my gf how to longboard. I also work as a snowboard instructor and these tips apply to pretty much every board sport: 1. You are going to fall. We’ve all been there. Turn on the Xgames and you’ll see even the pros still fall. It happens to all of us from just learning how to ride all the way to learning a new trick. So don’t be scared and wear the proper gear if you’re worried about getting hurt. 2. Ever seen a jogger run by? How long did you think about them after they passed you? A few seconds? Maybe not even at all? It’s the same thing when you’re on a board. They’ll judge you for a second and forget so who cares what they think. 3. The community has all been where you were at some point. Some of the best people I’ve met in the sport only started a year or two ago. Most are willing to give you pointers and are extremely helpful. Anyone mocking you is most likely under the age of 15 and/or aren’t very good either. Just tell them their mom made you a bangin breakfast earlier. 4. Lastly, just have fun with it and learn to feel the board man. It’s not taking you for a ride you’re riding the board. Hope this all helps to any newcomers!
First off: You're adorable. Second: I just started university, im on campus and all the people here can ride a skate/long board and because of that, I just started learning. Everybody looks silly at first and anyone who judges you rather than admiring your determination to learn is an actual idiot. You’ll get the hang of it and have so much fun.
I feel like it's not just for the whole "looking cool and experienced", but these tips make skating much more efficient, fast, and comfortable in the long run than if one were to stick with the beginner traits, like pushing without fully swinging or bending the knees (making it more tiring for less speed and distance) and for things like turning without stopping, stopping, and picking up the board in more comfortable and quick ways.
As a newbie I'm using some of these tips and I have to admit that even a few of these steps that may seem unhelpful for many, can really help to create a feeling with the board. In the end it's also fun to create an extra feeling of control with the board without looking goofy 😅 Thank you for the video. 🤙🏼

Hey. I started riding boards in 1978 with my friends in a park. Back then we didn't know anything about style, although we idolised the California scene, mostly we made it up as we went along. Although I think this is a cool vid nicely presented, I'd say that skateboarding is about developing your own style. I'd say that's more important than trying to look like other established skaters. Do it your own way, develop your own techniques, while also paying attention to other styles. Forget about feeling embarrassed about how you look and focus on the feeling of the ride you're on. I can see so many skaters who adopt established fashions. We wore converse when we were kids, not because we looked cool, but because in the late seventies they were so cheap most kids in my neighbourhood had a pair and they seemed to suit our rough and tumble nature. Don't try and act cool. Just be cool and have faith in yourself. What other people think about you is none of your business.
Great video :) you really inspire me. I recently bought my first longboard after wantig to start skating for years. I have never been confident enough to try it and felt really uncomfotable as a beginner with the first steps of learning not knowing anybody who skates. Your videos really helped me to start and learn it. Still have a lot to learn but its a lot of fun, so thanks for the videos anyways :) greetings from germany
Just bought my first board last weekend and I was really getting the hang of jumping on my board while it was rolling but I busted my leg up pretty good yesterday, so I’m taking notes today! Thank man love your content 🥇
I'm 57, and ride a longboard - I used to skateboard as a teenager in the late 70's, though I was never particularly good at it. Being able to ride a skateboard of any type in your 50's puts you above the 75th percentile of people your age.
Tbh I feel super self-conscious at my local skatepark (it has a huge super smooth open area that’s great for practicing freestyle tricks and stuff) since everyone is supremely talented, and it doesn’t help that I have a bright red longboard with a flamboyant paint job on the clear grip lol. I feel like they’re all silently judging my unbalanced self XD
I just got my new longboard earlier and I've been watching your videos for maybe about 2 years because I find it so satisfying to watch so happy that I can finally try it on
perfect timing. I'm the beginner , just bought my first longboard yesterday :) hopefully this will help me with being more comfortable cruising around in public
What u can do is put your board down, push it away from you then jump on it ,as long as u lean forward there is no way you will fall back and with the momentum of your body the board will move forward with u so u can't fall forward aighter
I think the biggest thing that changed my pushing was simply keeping my balance in the board rather than moving my weight to the ground when pushing ... easier said than done as a beginner but once I knew what to do, it wasn’t long before I was 10x more confident on the board.
gottaluvlauren I got one about a month ago but only started riding it two weeks ago. I wouldn't say it's hard it is just odd. I suggest you try and learn how to get on it, leaning and get comfortable with how you want to cruise on it without moving first. I went on my drive way which has a very small slope and practiced standing on my board and rolled down and I found it really helped me learn how I’m comfortable standing and knowing how to keep my balance. You should also learn how to stand the oppositely how you naturally go to stand on the board. That could be “goofy”, which is your right foot at the front, or “normal”, with your left foot at the front. Then I focused on stopping myself, then pushing my self up and down the slope while focusing on my footing. One MAJOR TIP is that helped me was focus on your knees! It helps with basically everything I tried to do. I hope this helps and if you get one have fun!

Mine is so worn that I cant use the tail to pick it up without splinters. I probably always look so stupid when picking it up 😂
thanks for covering beginner themes, i really appreciate it =)
Glad you like it!!
Just ordered my first longboard ! Im 24 and hopefully i can be comfy soon to cruise around town ! Any tips on learning progression btw ? What to learn first etc :D
I’m 40 years old and just started learning on a longboard because my 13 and 9 year wanted to learn to skate. I look goofy majority of the time. Trying to not fall on my face is my goal. Your vid looks like expert level to me. Thanks for the tips!
See, I’m not afraid of people thinking I’m a beginner, but I’m deathly afraid of hills, and my entire town is hills
same, going back up is terrible too
you're so wholesome and helpful! i'm looking into longboarding to get to classes once i start college and happened to stumble upon your videos. thanks for making these!
Haha awww so cool
Man, this is such a well made and informative tutorial!! I was a skater in my childhood and I just started longboarding (at 36y). You definately gave me some good tips . Also, the production, the slow-mo parts and your teaching stlye... Everything was top notch 🙏🙏
I have a skateboard right now and is wanting a long board, I really would like to cruise with them but none of my friends are like that. 🤦🏻♀️ bummer
Hi
“Just kick your board up and grab it”
**Cries in no kick-tail**
Us the tip of your shoe and push really hard on the "tail" of the board
Been long boarding for exactly 2 days now
Im here not to look good but for examples of pushing - good stuff !!
Bro, im longboarding for 6 years now and after seeing this... i feel like a noob haha
Just saw this video accidently cause youtube wanted me to see it. How ever i really enjoyed the way you explain how beginner can get more energy on the board.
You are describing not only how it looks better, but you tell how you really get energy on the board, so it leeds to better flow. Really enjoyed this one
I just started longboarding thanks for the tips!💞
I'm a beginner never skated before and today I started and when I started it was soo easy thank you so much for the advice!
Underrated comment ❤
Hi, I'm here in Brazil.
I'm 54 and I'm starting on Longboard.
Sure. You are helping me...
Thanks !
The camera loves you my dude. I think maybe I do too.
Going to buy my first ever longboard this week! Preparing with you videos, can’t wait to actually try and practice these things!
I'm 56 and learning to longboard I'm truly not concerned if I look like a goober pretty sure it goes with the territory, I'm just having fun.
I'm 57, and ride a longboard - I used to skateboard as a teenager in the late 70's, though I was never particularly good at it.
Being able to ride a skateboard of any type in your 50's puts you above the 75th percentile of people your age.
Yooooooooo those trucks look sick wit the board. Great color choices
I just got my new longboard earlier and I've been watching your videos for maybe about 2 years because I find it so satisfying to watch so happy that I can finally try it on
I love the skating and longboarding culture and aesthetics
Hi bro, I'm from Brazil, and I start to learning about longboard in the past week, your videos help me a lot, thanks bro
I like how the title is how to NOT look like a beginner and you are just pointing at Yoth hahahah
perfect timing. I'm the beginner , just bought my first longboard yesterday :) hopefully this will help me with being more comfortable cruising around in public
Haha perfect timing indeed, have fun!!
I’m just struggling getting on my board and I look dumb 😂
What u can do is put your board down, push it away from you then jump on it ,as long as u lean forward there is no way you will fall back and with the momentum of your body the board will move forward with u so u can't fall forward aighter
I think the biggest thing that changed my pushing was simply keeping my balance in the board rather than moving my weight to the ground when pushing ... easier said than done as a beginner but once I knew what to do, it wasn’t long before I was 10x more confident on the board.
I want one so bad but I’m tryn to save money rk
Edit:I’m getting one tomorrow 😂
It's Mythi do you still longboard? and is it hard bc i might be getting one too
@@lozzyishere same
gottaluvlauren I got one about a month ago but only started riding it two weeks ago.

I feel so much better because EVERYONE had to start somewhere im still self conscious about me practicing around people but im getting better everyday so thank you for your videos!
"Bonus meme" meme hit me out of nowhere. Good job, you earned a like.
I needed this thanks bro 💙 from Australia
Ayeee much love
Who else came here ironically but started taking mental notes?
56 just got my first long board, loved boards since my teens was into the 70s skateboard scene.
I have a lot of trouble with picking the board up because of the boards shape
I have a drop deck board which makes it really difficult to pop it up by moving the back. Have you found anyway around this?
Good tips for beginners. I longboard for 3 years now and all you said I did intuitive.
I'm learning how to longboard to get to college as transport, but I'm also using it for a character in a video but my character has been long boarding for years, i have not, so i decided to watch this
The title is misleading actually. This video is making longboarding easier for us beginners! Very helpful thank you!
Didn't skip your ad hahaha
Picking up my new board tomorrow..
Haven't been on a board for about 30 years... Really looking forward to it!
Thx for the video!
I am a skateboarder why am I here...?!
For the lulz
The best tip ever is not to care. I remember when I first stepped on a longboard, I simply fell in love with it. I actually felt so good with it that I couldn't give a damn about how I looked when I was learning, I was having a blast 😂
What about stopping though? Especially stopping abruptly at higher speeds.
I usually step off and step on the board
Try to foot break
Time to learn to slide
I just got my first longboard and this video is so helpful (:
Any tips for picking up a pintail longboard?
James Connolly they are relatively easy to pick up, just make sure not to mistake the back for the front.
BurningBacons but the tail is so long, idk how to kick the board up high enough
James Connolly it just takes time to get used to
@@jamesconnolly849 ram it on a bump it flattens then it will be really easy
My dad had a longboard for like 10 years, but it was JUST the board, dregs paradox. Today we went out to a shop to make it usable and it has been the funnest thing I've done outdoors.
I cant drop my board Down because I have an arbor longboard and the wheels bounce when I drop it
Lovely tips about pushing, I saw a video of me pushing and I looked so weird, I prefer to be elegant. You’re an inspiration 🙃
I am a beginner and I just can't stop being afraid while skating//
Btw, video is great, thank you very much!
Same. 🙂
I have snowboarded for years and can rip but with longboarding it’s the pavement and stopping
Just got into longboarding with a couple of friends we always spend time either riding our bikes or long boarding or we longboard around our skatepark at night it’s pretty fun
Kudos.
Hope you'd give tips for drop-down longboards. Im used of cruisers and skateboards. Got a dropdown board as a gift and would like to learn more.😊😊
This video really helped me. Following through with my pushing leg gets me way better cruising speed. Seems so obvious now that I think about it.
thnx Bro , you are that smooth
not a poser and got the heart for noobs like me =)
Haha thanks
Starting out at 37 years old. Intimidating but I do love the 10 seconds of cruising until I fall off. Thanks for this video
How do you pick up your board, if it doesn't have a tail at all? Something like electric longboard or so..
might be heavy and slow, but pick it up by the side
Mine doesn’t have a tail but I can still kick it up the same way
I got my longboard about a month ago and I love it!!! I'm just starting to learn to ride switch, I normally ride goofy!
