  • I made this edit of all three Ridley themes in Samus Returns mixed together so they transition into each other. That spot between the second and third phase was really tricky. Hope you like! I originally made this because it's part of a soundtrack mod for Terraria, but I figured I would share since I liked how it turned out.

    most people think that Proteus Ridley is here just for fanservice, but in reality his appearance at the last moment after almost all the Metroids were wiped out trying to steal the last Metroid from Samus helps to connect the Prime series (because of him being Meta Ridley) to Super Metroid and the main series. That's what I like about his implementation.

    • @raetekusu1
      @raetekusu1 2 месяца назад +4

      It also a) shows how Ridley knew the baby metroid had been transported to Ceres, and b) made his "unexplained" return after being blasted to smithereens in Metroid 1 only to show up in Super not unexplained anymore. It really ties not just Prime to the main series, but also the main trilogy together.

      Considering Raven Beak mentioned he can clone Samus. I think he may have a cloning facility off world. It also implies that he's who the Federation got the ability to clone Ridley from. If that is true. He may have already cloned him again and a new Ridley is about to get released.

    I absolutely love the intensity and the climax, Metroid is one of the only game series, where the fights aren't filled with any funk, or epic, or horrifying music, its just intense, like every encounter can be your last, and its so good here, because with each phase more and more beats are added and you feel so stressed from the intensity of the combat, knowing that you have come to far into the fight to lose.

    A shame Ridley just got shoehorned into the plot for this game. He just shows up to grab some Metroids. Diggernaut, on the other hand, gets _way_ too much foreshadowing for a character that doesn't really have to do anything with the plot, foreshadowing that could've spent on Ridley to make the best boss of the game even better.

    • @chrispork1443
      @chrispork1443 2 года назад +15

      Are you forgetting that Super Metroid happens IMMEDIATELY after Metroid II / Samus Returns? It’s no longer a coincidence that Ridley steals the baby Metroid almost right after Samus leaves Ceres.

    • @themindfulmoron3790
      @themindfulmoron3790 Год назад +3

      @@chrispork1443 No, but what is strange is that the canon now has to bend over backward for any of that to make sense. Ridley shows up more dangerous than we've literally ever seen him outside of Phazon enhancement, gets his shit absolutely rocked by Samus and the infant Metroid, and before even making sure he's dead, Samus just leaves.
      Even if we ignore that, why does he show BACK up literally hours later, once again at completely full strength, and lead the assault on Ceres? Why does he bother fighting her even briefly when he JUST got his ass handed to him earlier that SAME day? Especially since he, realistically, hasn't had any time to recuperate. Now it just looks like he either magically got all of his strength back despite having very little to harvest in the way of biomass (an ability most Metroid fans don't even know he has because it never comes up in the games), or he rushed himself to make the assault on Ceres despite not being physically ready, and despite apparently being a great tactician, he literally opened the door for Samus to go in and finally actually kill him later that day.
      He doesn't even bring back-up despite the fact that we know he HAS backup! Why would he show up to fight Samus, at the tail end of one of her adventures, with no help? Did he assume she'd be distracted by the infant Metroid? No, because he had no way of knowing about it! Did he assume he'd be able to take her alone expecting it to not be there? That doesn't work because this would be the literal seventh time in the timeline she's whooped his ass one-on-one. He should know better by now!
      Ridley showing up doesn't even work within the story of Samus Returns as a twist. People who weren't familiar with the way the original game goes didn't have any context for it, and the people who were weren't surprised because of Samus Returns pacing issues.
      The original Metroid II sought out to demonstrate the life-draining effects that Metroids have on an ecosystem by showing you the decay of that ecosystem the further in you go. The deeper into the planet you get and the more dangerous the Metroids became, the fewer predators you could find. Eventually, all you're left with are tiny little prey animals because that's all there is left to hunt. The tunnel before the Metroid Queen was quiet and lonely, and the tunnel afterward was serene and introspective. The first tunnel is just you, just Samus, proceeding onward... alone. The second tunnel is less lonely, as a beautiful melody ramps up while Samus and the baby climb out onto the planet's surface, together. No upgrades to find, no enemies to fight, just you and the Metroid alone, but together. And then you enter your ship and just, leave. Metroid II's ending was hopeful. It was always supposed to be. As if, after literal genocide, there was still somehow room for compassion.
      Anyway, instead of any of that, in Samus Returns both of those tunnels are absolutely chock full of dozens of enemies you've already fought dozens of times, removing literally ANY payoff that sequence might have had. No, there are challenges to overcome, upgrades to find, places to explore! The tunnels even look indistinct from the rest of the game. So when Ridley shows up, it's not exactly a surprise. The original game at least felt like it COULD have been building up to something, but Samus Returns completely misunderstands the meaning of the original game. Ridley doesn't subvert anything because there's nothing to subvert. The atmosphere is dead. Even the moment where you find the baby doesn't seem like anything special. The way the game paces itself, the baby Metroid just seems like a sudden neat post-game gimmick. And when Samus and the baby reach the surface, instead of a calm beautiful walk to the ship, suddenly green storm clouds build as the music turns dark and sinister, so Ridley showing up doesn't come across as any sort of surprise.
      Make no mistake, Proteus Ridley, outside of being a fun boss and perhaps the best final boss in the franchise from a gameplay perspective, is one of the absolute worst things about Samus Returns. It doesn't work within the game's story, it doesn't work in the larger universe, and honestly it just comes across as overindulgent. C'mon guys, we get it. Ridley is iconic. Even non-Metroid fans know him. We don't need to shoehorn him into a remake of a game he was never in to begin with! C'mon, even AM2R got that ending right! Metroid II was always better for not including him! It'd be like if Marvel announced a remake to Spider-Man 2 (the Sam Raimi one) where Sandman showed up at the last minute and almost killed MJ or something.

    • @Mac14329
      @Mac14329 Год назад +7

      He didn’t just show up to grab “some Metroids”. There was only one Metroid left: the Baby. And he wasn’t “just shoehorned in”. The point of Ridley was to both foreshadow Super Metroid and further establish the Prime games as canon, as shown by his cybernetic parts.
