since i made this video, ive learned a lot more about this fight and wish i didnt make this video so early. he feels so unfinished, with more bugs than ive ever seen, even though i said i wouldnt talk about them since they aren't intended. but at this point, it's probably more than worth mentioning considering he's been out for 2 months and hasn't been patched a single time and remains the most buggy fight i've ever seen on launch. anyways, just my perspective now that ive fought him so much more, wish they finished him before releasing. wasted potential

@@Eternal_Placidity while that's true that high damaging attacks deal high poise damage, these things don't have to be closely connected
If you would increase the pillar damage then the fight would be way worse imo, unless you would rebalance the damage of the entire boss around that, which is a possibility but then the standard attacks are weaker so that maybe also would weird for people like you
If you would decrease the pillar poise damage then it would allow the player to dodge in less effective ways for punishes. Phase 2 teaches you how to roll the attacks of phase 1 better so you can optimize your dodges and have better attack windows

The double slash is indicative of a problem that exists in a lot of ER bosses, it discourages aggression and actually interfacing with the boss in a significant way. You need to wait patiently for the boss to finish its anime combo and sneak 1-2 hits in, rinse and repeat.
They nailed it in Sekiro, where you can force the boss to stick to your own tempo instead -- IF you're skilled enough at the game. Being skilled at the combat in Elden Ring means being passive and extremely paranoid that the boss will do a weird combo extension that they SOMETIMES do and mess up your attempt.

Godskin Apostle has a double slash similar to that too. Godskin Noble has some pretty nasty combos that you just need to be far away from too, not to mention how lightning-fast noble presence is.
Another separate issue is that all of the above bosses have telegraphs that can't necessarily be reacted to, but rather need to be memorized. They have one or several jerky animations in the windup, or just have extremely unnaturally long windups to get you to roll early.
Sure, that's part of getting good, but I think reacting well as a result of paying attention is better than "oh I have to ignore this attack's telegraph and rely on brute timing instead."

  •  Месяц назад +221

He’s got 3 major issues imo
1: The cross slash. I don’t need to touch on this because any sane player knows why this is a problem
2: The readability and learning experience of dodging his clone attacks. The fact that (if you aren’t light rolling with a talisman I believe) you have to learn to dodge the meteors different in phase 2 to dodge the clone strike follow up, despite the fact that dodging the meteors via strafing like I learned how to do in phase 1 still technically works is really frustrating at least to me. I had to look it up after dying for awhile because I couldn’t tell what I was doing wrong and no wonder, I had to dodge a different attack completely differently to the way I dodged it in the first phase in order to be able to dodge the 2nd attack. This isn’t communicated effectively enough to the player and it really bothered me even though once I learned it became the most consistent punish window.
Edit for clarification: I already know how to dodge this attack. This comment was about how, depending on how you learned how to dodge meteors in phase 1 (strafing them versus running away) it would make it exponentially harder to dodge the meteor clone combo in phase 2 without any real way to figure out that you have to change how you dodge the meteors rather than changing how you dodge the clones. I’m sorry I poorly communicated this but that was the actual intent of this point and I guess I fucked up because I keep getting the same responses on how to dodge despite the fact I know that and I stated as such. My comment wasn’t “it was hard to dodge” it was “it was hard to figure out what I was doing wrong and had to change something that for all intents and purposes, the game said I was doing right initially”. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

    •  Месяц назад +3

@@theholypopechodeii4367 the rolling is irrelevant if you were able to dodge the meteors in a way that allowed you to dodge the clones I mentioned rolling because if you have light roll + talisman you can actual just dodge all the clones with rolling regardless so you can just run at Radahn while he is doing the meteor clone combo and be fine. Rolling is irrelevant otherwise since you are going to dodge in a way that usually outspaces Radahn. Now, if you are saying you were able to dodge the 4 clone hits with medium roll point blank I’d be impressed and would like to see it because my (admittedly brief) RUclips search brought up nothing on the subject.
TLDR: I only mentioned rolling because if you have light roll + talisman you just don’t have to care about positioning at all. Otherwise, rolling is irrelevant because you are relying on positioning instead unless you were alluding to being able to medium roll the 4 clone hits point blank and not get hit which I admit I’m dubious because my RUclips search brought up nothing.

I completely agree with the ruined boss idea, and is curious because the main issue I find with this boss, is the fact that it doesn´t feels "Elden Ring" enough.
You see, by all means it should be a banger. Well defined mechanic, well telegraphed attacks, good music, incredible visuals. A great challenge man!
And there comes the stupid decisions.
Appears the concept of removing what made ER bosses so appealing to begin with.
Concepts like "You can control the follows ups depending of your distance" are ignored in favor of RNG follow ups, one of them being one of the worst delayed attacks with no play around.
Concepts like frame traps...Why? Why on a community that has a lot of no-hitters you add unavoidable BS damage that only can be negated by other methods?
Increasing artifiaclly the hitboxes when a lot of the catch of ER bosses is to get on a good position in order to avoid damage no roll needed.
And of course visual design decision like not making Radanh Shadow be visible over the lighting, or Miquella hair being a visual clarity obstacle.
This honestly feels like an insult of what ER base bosses (including Malenia) were to a lot of people , and is heartbreaking that this probably rushed dissapointment has to close so overall good boss roster.

What I personally don't understand is why the attack comes out so fast. It isn't the first time From has designed jank attacks that can't be dodged merely with good dodge timings, good positioning has been getting more and more emphasis with Elden Ring really requiring you to dodge a certain way...
But if the double slash needs special treatment to be avoided effectively, why the hell does it come out so fast you basically have to hug his right kneecap the entire fight? At the very least, Waterfowl gives you ample time to try and think of a way out, be it running away, abusing freeze procs, ashes of war... or performing the janky dodge roll. The double slash doesn't give you anything, it comes out lightning fast and boom, you just took heavy damage.

I just think it's too damn much for the Souls system of combat. They're clearly hitting the logical limit of how much visual and gameplay "clutter" they can hit without making it completely unreadable to me. I beat him, sure, but I didn't have a ton of fun doing it.
I found learning his moves and dodge timings to be obtuse. The "positional attacks" feel arbitrary at times and extremely random, as it changes by the pixel. Sometimes he does double Lion's Claw. Sometimes he doesn't. Why? I couldn't tell you.
Waterfowl, the double slash, and a few other attacks are all able to be diagnosed with a similar issue, and it's that learning how to deal with them is an obtuse process. Dealing with Waterfowl consistently *requires* you to unlock your camera and do a little jig before it works. Why? I don't know, because I can't tell if the move was designed like that, or if that's a byproduct of them trying to make an attack that's nearly impossible to dodge while too close or locked on.
Radahn's tri-slash isn't as bad, but it's also super fast for no reason. So not only does it require a super specific timing and positioning, it also is one of the fastest attacks from a boss in the game with no option for "non-commital" choices unless you run greatshield or Deflecting Hardtear.
It's just annoying to want to learn a boss and either have to learn the RNG, bash your face against a wall until you just suddenly figure out how to dodge the attack, change your build, or look it up. I never want to have to look up a damn guide on how to beat a boss, especially in a FromSoft title.
I've beaten all of their modern titles, save Demon's Souls. Only achievement in Sekiro I'm missing is for getting all the skills which is tedious more than difficult. They have to shake up their mainline titles more than "It's Dark Souls 3 again" after ER.

It’s definitely a problem when the whole fight revolves around trying to avoid this move. But to be honest it’s not even just this attack either (though the cross slash is most of the problem) This whole fight if just dodging rolling is extremely restrictive and has virtually no room for any player flexibility whatsoever. Every attack has to be dodged the same way, mostly in the same direction with the same positioning. Compare this to a fight like Rellana that has a ton of different ways to approach her, dodge and position her moves.
Every hitless fight of this boss you see will be more or less the exact same. Not taking away from anybody who’s done this fight hitless of course, it’s an amazing achievement but I also know if I go into a hitless Radahn fight it’s going to be the same as the last 10 fights I watched. And honestly that’s kind of disappointing, and all because of (mostly) one attack. This makes the boss feel like a “sekiro boss in ER” in a way more than other bosses because there is virtually one way to approach this boss if you want to consistently dodge his attacks. So in all honesty my main gripe with this fight, bullshit aside is the fact that it is very restrictive. You play it one way or get fucked

When Radahn starts the meteor attack by slashing the ground, you have to dodge towards him in order to maximise the distance between you and him (he'll fly behind you, so dodging towards him before he starts flying will increase the distance between you). I found that only by dodging forward and then running back as far as possible (and turn left/right and jump or roll the meteors at the last second) will the clones not be able to reach you. You can also try the light roll or Bloodhound step to increase the distance the initial roll does, but this is not necessary.
Also if you're not trying to get a no hit/damage kill, you can simply deflect the 4 clone hits, then roll the real Radahn, then roll again after a short delay for the light AoE. If done correctly the only damage you'll take is an inconsequential amount of holy chip damage from deflecting the 4 clone hits.

I do like the general idea of the fight, and from an artistic standpoint, everything is great: the music, character design, etc. However, the execution felt really rushed. It's like the developers wanted to create the hardest boss fight in the game but didn't have enough time, so they made a lot of questionable decisions just for the sake of difficulty. I cannot see Mesmmer alongside Radahn and say they are from the same game or made by the same developers; the difference in quality is gigantic.
My main problem is that 'rushed' feeling. I see the clone attacks and just think they are goofy. It reminds me of those mods in Sekiro that make Isshin more difficult by adding a lot of clones and afterimages on the screen. It's something that I did not expect from FromSoftware. That one attack where he goes to the right and summons one clone is fine and badass, but all the other ones just feel like they were made for the sake of difficulty, which is sad.
Normally, the difficulty is created by adding cool and different ideas to the fight, like Isshin using a sword, spear, gun, and lightning. Radahn HAD this opportunity with his blades, gravity, bloodflame, and Miquella, but for some reason, they decided to put three gravity attacks, one bloodflame attack, and Miquella's holy attacks in everything he does. The only good ideas are the rings of light, which Miquella learned from Radagon; they are cool. I feel like if they had more time, this fight could have been one of the best, if not the best, they ever made. But I don't know, two years was a lot...

I think the main problems this boss has are as follows:
    - That one cross swing that's essentially unavoidable
    - His second phase consists mostly of screen cancer
    - The terrain in the fight is just awful

Sorry but malenia’s waterfowl is way more fucking annoying than any of radahns moves including the cross slash
at most i get hit by the second hit of the cross slash and i agree that it needs to be nerfed but dodging waterfowl is so fucking inconsistent and requires so much practice and absolutely REQUIRES a tutorial to dodge and even then it’s annoying
besides, the cross slash isn’t even that annoying. if you’re a normal person playing the game normally without doing dumb shit like no hitting and RL1 and enforcing arbitrary challenges onto yourself and then complaining about the boss being too hard, you will not care about getting hit once by radahn. it’s like a quarter of most normal players’ health bar at that point.
people acting like one move ruins radahns entire fight are honestly extremely unserious

I have been noticing more and more that a Souls boss’ entire difficulty very often comes down to their worst attack. If they have just one single attack that’s super fast or disproportionately hard to deal with in some other way, the entire playstyle against them can be vastly altered in a usually kinda bad way if you want or need to play it safe. The Radahn Cross-slash, Malenia WFD, Oceiros instacharge, Radagon’s shotgun and/or hammer thrust, Logarius’ instant sword swipe, Ludwig’s triple stomp, there’s just some attacks so bad you have to abandon punish windows or entire playstyles because either your positioning isn’t perfect, you don’t have the time to dodge the gamechanger if you punish, or it requires a timing so much earlier than everything else that it just puts you on the edge of rolling every twitch immediately the whole fight, even if all their other attacks are chill.

There’s not enough jumpable attacks, and the ones that you can jump look silly. You can jump those light pillars that come from the fucking sky, but not the ones from the AoE. It’s just sad, because every other DLC boss did really well with this with the exception of Metyr I guess.

This is the only take I've seen of Radahn on YT I fully agree with, I feel like most of the other complaints are genuine skill issues from people who can't bother to learn his attacks. That said, his cross slash and arena are gaping holes in his design that need to be changed ASAP.

tbf it only really effects no hit runs, which has been annoying me in my attempt at a no hit parry run I have been working on for a bit now. Otherwise it's not that big of a deal, it doesn't do that much damage to only get hit by 1 of the 2 slashes. And I feel like the average player complaining about this boss isn't even good enough at the boss to identify the problem correctly, they barely distinguish the moves apart from each other.

Can we talk about there being no real reason to jump over his stomps? There's not enough time to punish it with most weapons and the terrain messes up your jump sometimes, it's disappointing because it was so fun and reliable to do in the godfrey fight whereas here it's just kinda another move you have to roll. It's alot less interactive

    • @Sirhaddock
      @Sirhaddock Месяц назад +15

@@Ghorda9whether or not you think no-hit is stupid, nothing in these games should be this demanding to dodge for the sake of regular players. It’s annoying for no-hit runners, but we’re more likely to figure out something bullshit to get around it. For regular players though the result is that they have an RNG chance of losing to a boss they’re already struggling with and getting frustrated, as well as them being less likely to realise that it’s impossible so they’ll just blame themselves and lose motivation. It also just means for those players they’re forced to make a tanky enough build to survive that attack, which removes some freedom and agency when deciding how to level up / what armour to wear.
The thing that made these games special was that they were difficult because they were complex, not because they were unfair. Things like Metyr laser, Romina’s instant AOE and Radahn cross slash contradict that.

I really wish more no-hit runners discussed boss design and process. A lot of common critiques I see are usually from people who’ve only beaten the boss once and never again. Learning them hitless has changed my perception of a huge number of the game’s roster, and it’s nice hearing someone experienced discuss them too!
Side note: thank you for making your fights so cinematic and stylish without going overboard in the video titles. I’ve seen too many ‘epic cinematic’ fights where half the time is spent running away from attacks instead of actually dodging them properly.

I just played thru the dlc last week and the double slash literally made me switch to a crit parry build. Its still very hard to parry, but i learned that he tends to go for it after his stomp and grab. The other parriable moves are more reactible have very lenient windows, so id basically always be looking at his left shouldee for the startup. Two other things to make it more consistent is to always be in his face and to keep him facing you. Parrying also avoids lots of the holy attacks from happening in phase 2

That cross attack sums up what it feels like to fight him for me. There is a clearly optimal way to fight him (which you learn very quickly and is actually part of the problem) which makes every fight just feel outright tedious.
Also personally, i don't care if it's a new model with new animations and a (technically) new moveset, they've reused the character and the idea which really detracts from the hype. This also makes learning the boss even quicker, and thus even more tedious since you're just waiting for him to do something you don't already intuitively know how to dodge from the first fight.
