I’ve watched all your Africa build videos and really enjoyed them - great attention to details. We did Morocco this time last year and our tour guide advised on a “spare spare wheel n tyre!” We bought the 6th but in hindsight should have got a tube/ repair kit, something to think about. Good luck
Thanks very much Perry. Sounds like you had an amazing adventure. Thanks for the tip, the Aussies often run 2 spare wheels, especially when taking on some of the outback tracks. Like you say it’s a bit of a balancing act really. Looking at the likelihood of 2 blowouts vs the extra weight you have to carry and the space it takes up. Some people have said don’t take a winch because it’s wasted weight but we like the comfort of having it, it’s hard to know what gear to take. We’ve always got puncture repair kits, Jon’s obsessed with them 😂 so will definitely have some with us.
Something worth fitting to the rear door is a strut,iv not long since fitted one to mine and what a huge difference it make's and only around £50 for the kit 😎
Thanks Keith, yes we’ve fitted one too and can’t believe how much better it makes the back door! So much sturdier and will be much safer for cooking on 👍

Wow you two that defender is well fabulous it looks the real job. John have you thought of that full time I mean as a proper business? Or is that not the point as it’s all about touring just a thought. Hey Jess what’s wrong with your back door did it get stuck or something 🥰 ? Glad you got black Max Tracks and not those orange ones. Well done Jess he deserved that it might quieten him down a bit but I doubt it , buy the way did you find out what he’s on cos I think I may need some 🥴🥴😵💫 John what sort of battery system do you have in the land rover ? Thanks you two all the best great show and I’m learning a lot, take care Jon 🇦🇺🇬🇧
Thanks Jon we love her. We have 260 ah of AGM batteries which charges from our solar and dcdc charger. We have thought about building full time but think it would take the magic out of it if it wasn’t for us to use and go on adventures
What perfect escapism watching your build series. Really inspired and impressed with both of your skills, attention to detail & banter. Can I ask where you got your gas struts from & how did you calculate the right force needed?
Thanks kamran that’s much appreciated, we got the springs from a company called metrol springs, if you like I can send u the part number of the springs we got, They went up in force by about 50%, so from 500 - 800n 400-600n and 150 - 250n, we spoke to someone who had previously replaced the springs who suggested what rating to go for 😁

real good build mate ...id throw in a small rechargable chainsaw like a ryobi why for one you can cut a path through any fallen trees also and cut fire wood for an out door fire
Just watched all your Defender build videos while also seeing your Morocco travels. Great to see how it’s working out. Just one question though - how on earth did you find a Defender in such brilliant condition to start with?
😂😂 cheers mate, we got so lucky to be honest, went to look at one for the same money and was a wreck, thought this is going to be a nightmare, then found one on auto trader from a garage near Bristol, one owner from new and full service history, couldn’t believe it 🤷♂️👍
Hi terry, I know the compressors aren’t the best out there but bang for buck id say they are great, it’s a 2011 with 130k miles, hi mileage I know but 1 owner from new, full service history and only landrover parts used, he kept all the receipts and it’s immaculate 👍
We are out in it for the first time in Norfolk tonight and plan to test it out round the UK for a bit, then we will do the sprinter build and travel for a while in that before coming back to this and heading down to Africa, through Spain. Well that’s the plan at the moment anyway 😂
Hi wibble, thanks for watching😁, we have done a cost breakdown and complete cost of the whole build which will be out on Saturday if that’s any good to you
@@wibble_wibble7133 that’s amazing 🤩 you will love it! There’s nothing like travelling with your own home! Our favourite messages are when people say that it’s made them want to try something or brought back memories for them 💙
Hi there, I’ve been following your camper build, nicely done, I saw the chassis in a previous episode, is that not the 110HD? Looked like it with the extra platting and the double springs? I know they go to 3.5t. Thanks for the compressor idea! Gonna do the same with mine
Thanks mate, yep you’re right it’s a heavy duty 110 but not sure why it’s only rated at 3.2t, I was surprised to see it on the log book too to be honest 👍
Hello. Can you tell me what specs your upgraded gas struts were changed to? I saw 800 mm by 800NM are listed on an Alucab source but I feel these are more likely direct replacements rather than upgraded ones. Thank you
So we replaced all 6 springs, 2 @800nm 2 @ 600nm and 2 at 250nm, of u send me an email insta or Facebook message I can send u exact details of u like 👍
Oh mate …. We will be well overloaded by the time all that goes in, although it will quickly be underweight again as it won’t take her long to eat through it all 😂
Yeah we are a bit soft over here on weight limits compared to the rest of the world, apparently it’s all changing tho due to EV vehicles and them being heavy
Hi guys. Just found your channel and subscribed. Great build so will be binge watching to catch up. Love the interior living space with standing height due to the Alu Cab roof system. Great final touches with attention to detail and practicality. Great job all round. One thing I found which you may be interested in, seeing as Jess is handy with the sewing machine. It’s a rear door shelter cover used on a new style landy. Thought it might be an idea for you to use with the outdoor shower. I know you have the 270 awning but Could be adapted to also create a screen when showering if the awning is not being used or both. Great channel guys and look forward to your adventures. ruclips.net/video/1H-IKr16uzQ/видео.htmlfeature=shared
Thanks Ashley 😁 and thanks for watching, this is a brilliant idea, definitely making this, also the awning is great but it doesn’t cover the back door to the roof fully so this would then work with that too, also could use it on its own for like a small awning if I can’t get the awning out, like where I am now for example, thanks very much for the suggestion 👍
@@truebluetravellers you’re welcome. Would look forward to seeing how it turned out when you’ve done it as I haven’t seen one available for the older style landy’s. 👍🏻
220kg for food , pots and pans, clothes, chairs, spares, tools, cameras, laptop, drone etc is not enough, getting it up plated to 3500 gives you a bit more leeway though.
We did weigh everything but we are going to check it again now it’s fully packed to see where we are at. If we’re close to the limit then we will up plate it 👍

Such a brilliant build! We‘ve been traveling around Southern Africa with our Landy, on and off, since 2019 in a self build not half as good as yours. It’s all about your own experiences, so go and grab them! Cheers
Thanks so much. You’re so right, we love building campers but we love using them even more! Your adventures sound incredible! One of my favourite sayings it’s is ‘Get after it’ and it sounds like you’re doing just that 👍😃
amazing build guys, hope you have many happy miles ahead
Thanks very much Glen, that’s lovely of you to say 💙
Well done, guys. What an amazing job, we look forward to you guys travelling in it. Congrats again 🎉🎉👌👍👋
Thanks guys, hope your managing to get out and about in the hiace 👍 😁
love your pranks while building
😂😂😂 thanks 👍
Damn going to miss the build but looking forward to seeing it out in africa hopefully, and look forward to te next and the laughs that you bring along the way.
Love and blessings ❤️ 🙏 on your travels
Cheers scott 😁👍
@truebluetravellers no worries, absolutely love what you have done and have given me so much inspiration to crack on and get me a 110 and do what you guys have, won't be as good as not mechanically minded as you 🤣
@@scottcain1903 Wow that’s such a lovely thing to say, stoked that is given you the big to try overlanding and build. All the best with it mate 👍💪❤️
@truebluetravellers thank you means a lot, safe travels ❤️🙏
Great build ,the only landy i can afford is an rc one😅,never the less its a landy of sort
When you visit my birth country, remember the region called Mpumalanga, worth traveling thrue.
Legend 👍😂 everyone loves an RC car. Jon says the defender ones are mint! I will put that on my list thanks very much for the tip 😀
NO WORRIES,MAKE SURE TO VISSIT Bourkes lucky potholes, and the manny various waterfalls also.
Great content Guys 😂Love your Channel ❤
Thanks very much 😊💙
Brilliant build guys, really loved watching all the progress; inspirational - best of luck on the trip. Awesome adventures await 👍
What a lovely thing to say, thanks very much James 😃❤️
jeez you make the build looks so easy..
😂😂😂 thanks, the summer days helped 😊
What boxes do you have mounted on the roof?
They are called Plano boxes
www.planostore.com/large-plano-sportsmans-storage-boxes-heavy-duty-pack-of-two
Wow you two that defender is well fabulous it looks the real job. John have you thought of that full time I mean as a proper business? Or is that not the point as it’s all about touring just a thought.
Hey Jess what’s wrong with your back door did it get stuck or something 🥰 ? Glad you got black
Max Tracks and not those orange ones.
Fantastic build guys, I’ve loved every minute of it, looking forward to the next one.
Cheers Steven, just off out in the old beast now 😂👍
What perfect escapism watching your build series. Really inspired and impressed with both of your skills, attention to detail & banter. Can I ask where you got your gas struts from & how did you calculate the right force needed?
Thanks kamran that’s much appreciated, we got the springs from a company called metrol springs, if you like I can send u the part number of the springs we got,
They went up in force by about 50%, so from 500 - 800n 400-600n and 150 - 250n, we spoke to someone who had previously replaced the springs who suggested what rating to go for 😁
@@truebluetravellers Thank you - part number would be great. I recently built my own roof top tent and can’t for the life of me get the strut spec right.

X2 of each of these, the company is very helpful if u call them to discuss your requirements too
@@truebluetravellers thank you so much. Have a great time in your new camper.
nice idea✌
Thanks 😁
Looks spot on great little build
Now when do you want us to drop the Orange110Beastie off for you guys to do our interior build i cant seem to weld wood back together 😂
😂😂😂 yep can’t beat working with metal hey, aluminium cabinets would be mega but a friend was saying he got a quote for some £7k😂😅😅, wood it is then
Fantastic series! Really enjoyed it. What rocksliders/side steps have you got on there? I've been looking for ages for decent ones
Cheers dale 👍 just got them off eBay mate, real good to use as steps too,
but they are quite heavy, also they are quite slippery but I’ve fitted a small strip of 3m grip tape/skateboard tape along the top so now they are spot on 👍

Epic build. What are the dimensions of the bench/sleeping platform downstairs? thanks
Thanks very much, sorry we have recently sold it
I LOVE YOU GUYS...
Thanks 😁
real good build mate ...id throw in a small rechargable chainsaw like a ryobi why for one you can cut a path through any fallen trees also and cut fire wood for an out door fire
👍👍👍 love this idea 👌
Just watched all your Defender build videos while also seeing your Morocco travels. Great to see how it’s working out. Just one question though - how on earth did you find a Defender in such brilliant condition to start with?
😂😂 cheers mate, we got so lucky to be honest, went to look at one for the same money and was a wreck, thought this is going to be a nightmare, then found one on auto trader from a garage near Bristol, one owner from new and full service history, couldn’t believe it 🤷♂️👍
Can you somehow post a closeup picture of the jack handle modifications you used to install the gas struts?
Yeah course, if you send me a message on instagram or Facebook I can send you one 😁
I just managed to do a freeze frame and then zoomed in… now I can see what you did to compress the gas struts! Thx!
快乐的一对佳人😁😁😁
what an amazing lady Jess is! A dream partner; beautiful and so damn handy!
She’s a keeper for sure 👍👍👍
Sehr schick 🍺👍🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Thanks 👍👍
I have the same air compressor! Think I've cought up with your Defender build but I don't know what year it is and how many miles it shows?
Hi terry, I know the compressors aren’t the best out there but bang for buck id say they are great, it’s a 2011 with 130k miles, hi mileage I know but 1 owner from new, full service history and only landrover parts used, he kept all the receipts and it’s immaculate 👍
So where are you going in it?
We are out in it for the first time in Norfolk tonight and plan to test it out round the UK for a bit, then we will do the sprinter build and travel for a while in that before coming back to this and heading down to Africa, through Spain. Well that’s the plan at the moment anyway 😂
What are the storage boxes on the roof? They look to be a good size
The are called Plano boxes mate
www.planostore.com
@@truebluetravellers spot on. Thanks
Great series of vids! Looks like I’m going to have to buy a Landy 😂 what was your total cost for this build?!
Hi wibble, thanks for watching😁, we have done a cost breakdown and complete cost of the whole build which will be out on Saturday if that’s any good to you
@@truebluetravellers that’s amazing, you have inspired the wife and I to have a go!
@@wibble_wibble7133 that’s amazing 🤩 you will love it! There’s nothing like travelling with your own home! Our favourite messages are when people say that it’s made them want to try something or brought back memories for them 💙
Not custom but bespoke 🙈😂
Whats the name of the pop up roof and bed,and roughly costs please
It’s called an alucab and it’s costs about £9k, we did a video breaking down the costs of the whole build if that helps 👍
Let there be more Jon’s in the world
😂😂😂😂 thanks 😊👍
What springs did you use to replace the original Alu Cab closing springs?
From a company called metrol springs if u message me on Facebook or instagram I’ll send u the info mate 👍
Hey! How is the quality of those Carbest windows you have? The price is quiet good, but have you some long term experience? Thank you in advance!
@@truebluetravellers ah I think the 130 is for 3.5t :) anyways nice build, all the best!
What brand are the wheel chocks?
Sorry what do you mean by wheel chocks
Hello. Can you tell me what specs your upgraded gas struts were changed to? I saw 800 mm by 800NM are listed on an Alucab source but I feel these are more likely direct replacements rather than upgraded ones. Thank you
So we replaced all 6 springs, 2 @800nm 2 @ 600nm and 2 at 250nm, of u send me an email insta or Facebook message I can send u exact details of u like 👍
Love it! :-)
Cheers mate 👍
You remind me of guy Martin minus the speed engineering things
😂😂😂 don’t give him ideas!
How much do you fink it would have weighed it Jess' food was loaded John boy? ❤❤❤😢😢😢
Oh mate …. We will be well overloaded by the time all that goes in, although it will quickly be underweight again as it won’t take her long to eat through it all 😂
That was light for the weight my 130 empty is 2.56t with the camper it's 3.58t
If we’re close to the limit then we will up plate it 👍
A truely magnificant bild Jess n John. John, i fink you are a genius mate. I'm prowd of you bofe. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
