  • Hunting for fish in a Tiny creek. Graeme heads off into the countryside trying to grab a bit of river fishing action before the season shuts. Finally the water is in good condition but he only has a handful of small pools to try. Will he catch anything? or remain biteless? Then he is off to work on his daughter's house, cracking on with a week of painting, maintenance and carpet clearing hoping to buy himself some more fishing time...then, after getting an enquiry from someone wanting to start shark fishing, he travels to his local Tackle Up fishing store to investigate a rumour they have a great deal on some used big fish reels...it’s all in the mix this week a bit of everything,so sit back and enjoy.

    Rigs are so complicated nowadays. As long as swivel eyes are covered, I don't care for sleeves, clips, multiple beads and whatnot. I suppose if you're going to cast for a monster and not check your tackle for a day, tidiness is essential. Remember when tackle shops smelt like varnish and wicker, with a whiff of maggots?

    When I was a kid I loved fishing in little runs like these, I still do, but where they used to hold native perch species they tend to be over-run with carp and tilapia now. They can still be great places to fish if you're happy hitting the ferals for a session, which I'm partial to.
    Where I live, weekend fishing is a pipe dream due to the huge crowds of people. I live on an island in south east Queensland and it's connected to the mainland by a road bridge. We're less than an hours drive north of the state capital so it can get fairly hectic. The problem gets compounded by the island forming the top of a large bay and this part of the state having the highest rate of private boat ownership in the country. There are 2 marinas, 3 major and 3 minor public boat ramps within a 2 mile stretch. Fishing mid-week or in the dead of winter is about the only time you can cast without hitting a tourist in a boat or having your lines run over.

    Those plastic double ended disgorgers sink as I found out to my cost. I've lost two so far. A good tip is drill a wine cork and push the disgorger through but make sure its a tight fit so you can slide it to the top end when using it. It will float if dropped in the water by accident. That tackle shop had everything didnt it? In the latr 50s the only grounbait I could buy was a sack of Spratts silvercloud in a cloth sack and you used to soak the whole sack in water if I remember correctly.

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  Год назад

      I remember the "cloud" bait. We used it for Roach and Rudd. It would still work today (that's if we had any Roach & Rudd left !) Dare say the Carp would still move in on it and spoil a light floatfishing party though.

      I think Quint's was the black version,and single speed,not Hi-speed which is red..I have had plenty of big fish on those old star drag reels,but on fast running fish like Wahoo and Blue Marlin they heat up the drag washers and you had to pour water over them .I have had them get so hot over the star drag that you couldn't hold your hand on it..Good old workhorse reels though..They do the job.

I find myself overwhelmed by all the different patterns of fly's and would love to see a vid of what fly's you have had success on and most importantly what fly to use at what time of year. Ive looked through your videos and haven't found the info i was quite looking for so if you could spare the time to make a video sharing your knowledge that would be greatly appreciated and would hopefully improve mine and many other beginners fishing. kind regards.

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  Год назад

      The thing is there must be thousands of different flies. All trout anglers probably carry too many,yet catch on maybe half a dozen of their favourites . Have you tried looking in a secondhand bookshop and seeing if there are any fly fishing books that might give you some tips. A lot of "the right fly to use" is actually just personal preference . The trout can change what they will take from one day to the next.

    Grease, THANK YOU. Totally captivating little video. You remind me so much of my own father. As a child of maybe 4 years old I did exactly the same kind of fishing, mostly in forest spring fed streans and tributaries of the river Arun. I'm 61 now and ole Fisty my father died in 2009. So long gone.
    I'm full blood Romany, born in the vardo. My father worked for cash only, ( obviously ), and was a true country man, as I am. But, have been just a little bit indoctrinated by modern fishing practices etc. Anyway could talk for hours but not by messaging hurts my thumb.Hahaha. If you ever want to talk old school, and fishing in general, by all means message me and I would be happy to share my number. I'm certain we'll have a lot in common

  • @johnhanson8442
    @johnhanson8442 Год назад +1

    It’s soul destroying that these back waters off the main river don’t seem to hold the fish I used to catch back in the 60s (yes I’m old ) it’s just the same for these small creeks I’m sure it’s due to pollution of the land (fertilisers). It seem s that chub are the main fish to catch. Roach,dace and bleak seem to have disappeared

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  Год назад

      may well be correct.There is a small stream near to me that was full of Chub ,Dace,Perch,Gudgeon when I was a kid. Good flow,and plenty of swims. When I drive past it now (almost 3 times a week ) its just an overgrown ditch with barely any flow and trees now growing into the river. That is deffo water abstraction I feel,as there are housing estates popping up all over the place. What I don't understand is that nobody even seems interested in getting in,clearing weed,creating swims,cutting down overgrown stuff etc..Its just left to virtually close over. I see it on many rivers ,large or small,but its the smaller streams that seem to suffer more from neglect. The problem is that the current generation have no idea what the streams looked like 50/60/70 years ago,unless the older anglers tell them. Not that anything will ever be done.

    • @johnhanson8442
      @johnhanson8442 Год назад +1

      @@TAFishing Totally agree. Here’s a thought when we started fishing back in the 60s carp fishing was not really herd of. The rivers were in great condition and that where you started and learnt all the skills ie long trotting ledegering etc and the main skill water craft . Also a lot of club members used to do working parties to look after the river it used to be a condition in the club rules, that you had to attend so many. Most of today’s young anglers go straight to carp fishing as they can catch big fish straight away without having to really learn anything. RUclips videos are filled with carp fishing and the tackle shops so they can find the information to catch easily. It took me a long time to catch big fish a 3lb roach a 20lb pike that was for me the thrill of fishing trying to catch the biggest of all the river species and you had to work at it. Not sit by a lake and wait. I’m not saying there is no skill in catching carp as due to my arthritis is what I do these days, the water craft I learnt years ago still comes into play big time. I hate to think what the state of the rivers will be after I leave the planet. I shall fish till I can’t get to the water but not in the winter as affects my hands. I miss it enormously. Can’t beat a frosty morning with the sun rising just as much as a summers early morning with the sun just starting to rise. That’s my sort of light rant

      Only if I find a boat like the self-drives out of Devon or Ireland. I quite enjoy those,those hopefully I can track something down.

    Please don’t start using American names Graham,this is the UK and we have streams or rivers...we do not have creeks.

      I love the word "Creek",it winds people up ...!!! I don't know what the problem is...What about Fareham creek ?? I looked up the UK definition. A creek is smaller than a river apparently.

      i miss the fishing part,but I won't misds all the launch/retrieve/trailing/bearing greasing,constant checks of everything etc. Hopefully I can get out on the ocean soon in someone else's boat and just enjoy the fishing part of the day.
