  • Corsair's new 7000D Airflow & 7000X cases are now out, priced high and XL-sized. These are for "E-ATX" builds and compete vs. the Fractal Meshify 2 XL and O11 XL. Review tests thermals.

This review of the Corsair 7000D Airflow & Corsair 7000X looks at thermals, noise, and build quality. These cases are built for larger computers, so water cooling is highly compatible with the chassis, as are large motherboards ("E-ATX," although there are issues with EATX in this case). The Corsair 7000D Airflow follows-up the Corsair 5000D & 4000D, so we compare the three cases in this review. We'll also look at the 7000D vs. the Fractal Meshify 2 XL, Phanteks Enthoo Pro 2, and Lian Li O11 Dynamic XL. Large tower cases are a smaller market and highly competitive, so the 7000D has a hard fight ahead of it.

I kind of like the trend of having different sized cases with the same design like this and the fractal design cases. I think it's a great way to stop wasting time on usually pointless innovation and just focus on what works and iterate on it. It would be great if we actually get something close to perfect in the coming years that fixes all the recurring issues caused by cutting corners and shortsighted construction.

I really like the 7000D. The build process was fairly painless due to the good design and sheer amount of space in there. 140cm fans provide lots of airflow, easily keeping a 9900k (5ghz all cores) and 3080ti temperatures under control and the system is not particularly loud.
My only niggle is that I wish they would provide a fine dust filter for the side radiator panel. You only get a fine filter for the front panel. The coarse vent will allow too much dust into the case/radiator if you use it.

    • @lfscrazy

@@justinnesbit3948 CPU is cooled with a front mounted BeQuiet Silent Loop 2 280. Also at the front another 14cm fan blowing at the GPU. GPU is air cooled. On top there are 3 14cm exhaust fans. 1 14cm exhaust at the back.
So it's cold air in at the front, hot air out the top and back.

    • @justinnesbit3948
      @justinnesbit3948 2 года назад +1

@@lfscrazy Thanks for the response. I was unsure of what the best way to channel airflow would be. Couldn't determine if the design of the case is meant to push air out of the front, top and side, and draw air in from back. I will most likely waterblock AIO my GPU and get an AIO for the CPU, each with 2 or 3 120mm fans/radiator. I wouldn't mind maxing out all fans spaces if it makes a diff.

Excellent video! Thank You! I think I finally found the replacement for my Corsair Obsidian 800D. I am on my 4th build in it and I've been using for 12 years. I love the Obsidian 1000D but it's soo big and the glass is smoked so it's hard to see through.
I love the super thick side panel. I have to use adhesive putty to hold the center of my side panels in, most of the time they are just off.

I got the 7000x because it's gigantic and shiny and full of pretty colors. I've got 12 RGB fans running in it (4 front and side, 3 top, 1 rear). I paid 35 bucks or something after the fact to buy the top airflow panel to improve flow coming off the radiator fans -- best of both function+aesthetic worlds, albeit at a hefty price. I know the current trend skews towards smaller form factor, less garish RGB... but I don't care. I love this case. :-D

Something that'd be nice to see for these case reviews is some sort of "standardized" way of testing the case if all the fan slots are occupied. Obviously for low/mid ranged cases the stock config is more relevant
, but especially for these large cases its pretty safe to assume people will be shelling out for extra fans as well anyway. Whether that be for RGB fans or just plain ones. If you can budget for such a large case, I think its safe to assume you can budget for fans lol. Particularly for a case like this with side intake, that would certainly help the thermals of even the solid panel versions that otherwise look disappointing performance wise.
I say this as a 5000X user where with all the fan slots populated with corsair QL fans (not exactly great airflow fans) and I see only about 1C difference for both GPU & CPU swapping between glass and airflow front panels or even removing it entirely. At that point, the trade off is way more acceptable than the review would imply.

But it should have been an opportunity for the manufacturer of a big case to enable the customer to use it not only for show but for something productive too.
Let´s be honest Big Towers are rare these days. And when they come out the usually lack in useful spots for things the typical big tower buyer needs. HDD cases (or lack of) or a second Mini MB hardpoint or a second PSU slot.
Enthoo Pro 2 comes to mind which others just that, but with a disappointing build quality.

Building in a drive bay which does not hinder the front fan support is probably not that easy. And fan as well as radiator support is the most important criteria for cases meant to be used for excessive watercooling. Nowadays it is probably more likely to sell such a large case to someone who wants to build a large watercooling loop than to someone who actually needs a drive bay.
