i have a 3d printer, i wonder if i could design a wad like for a shotgun but for a 44cal cylinder. only question would be, would you rather have it like a cup to hold the shot, or like how you use the cardboard and just hold the back?
edit, i made a 44cal wad at 1.20mm tall (which is about 2x thickness of soda box cardboard, but i dont think the little puck form would ima try and design a cup type i guess?
I originally started carrying an 1860 Colt replica just for the shot load capability for hunting in the swamp many years ago. That was before the Taurus Judge came out.
I find a .44 cal percussion revolver more effective that CCI shot loads for revolvers.
For .44 cal, I use 20 grains of Pyrodex P, an over powder lubed wad, #5 lead shot compressed, and an over shot lubed wad.
For .36 cal, 15 grains Pyrodex P, an over powder lubed wad, #9 shot compressed, and an over shot lubed wad.
.44 cal is a more effective load, especially in a Colt Dragoon or a Walker.
Same load for a Colt or Remington revolver. Cap and ball revolvers are very versatile!
Follow Blackie's safety advice. Don't shoot too close to your feet or unintended target, and don't shoot plywood because the pellets can bounce back. Use eye protection.
I use # 12 shot for snakes. I have tried #5, of course, but the donut pattern reduces the pattern on target at ten yards. #12 is ultra-light, but, due to the intense pattern, takes out timber and sidewinders well on Scout outings.
My guess is old Sam the Serpent ain't much going to like the taste of that shot.
Great info Blackie! This process along with Guns of the West paper cartridges make things a little easier to carry other than a .410 SG…
I bet the 47 Walker would be ideal for a load like this!
Hi Blackie, did not know you could load shot into a black powder revolver. Thank you, great information.👍
Think I’ll try it wit couscous first ,hornets are devastating my lilac trees
Encore une excellente vidéo dans laquelle tout est parfaitement expliqué.
Même si on ne parle pas bien anglais, on arrive à comprendre car tu t'exprimes lentement.
Merci
You answered my live trap dilemma For large biting vermin.
Blackie , I don't own a Percussion revolver yet, but will probably change. Great Video and Outstanding Information as I have said many times You Are The Master Woodsman And Bushcrafter and you don't mind passing on the knowledge . Thank Again, Tim L.
Great video! Thank you for putting them out.
Thank you for the lessons here. Good to know that it"s a safe load if properly assembled. Good day.
Good Safety Tip on the Cyl. Gap, this also applies to any Revolvers. I recently had my Pietta 1860 Army out trying to Sight it in and wasn't thinking about the Gap. 25 grains of GOEX FFFg puts out a very Hot flame and I ended up setting my shooting bag I had under the Muzzle on fire, I spent about an hour and a half picking up about 200 little plastic pellets so as not to litter,
Can't wait to try, always kinda wondered if I could
I don’t even own one a revolver. But I support Blackie, so I made sure to watch (as I do every video) as well as like it. If you get to read this Blackie, Thanks for all the knowledge. I’ve made a lot of progress from your wisdom. Keep them coming! Ps love to cooking videos
Great info Sir!
Great info love all your videos
Excellent, thank you for posting.
My pleasure!
Good info, Blackie. Thanks.
Blackie, you are the Best!
Finally someone that goes to look at the target after the first shot ! I don't know how many snake shot cartridge video's I've seen where the guy shoots 2 or 3 shots into the target and then says it is a workable load. Thank you Blackie !!!
my pleasure
Good job Blackie.
This is an interesing creative practical, insightful idea of making your own Snake Shot charges for use in a percussion revolver.
The painted Soda Carton paper looks like an effective wadding material.
Author Hovey Smith, has used Paper Egg Carton and Styrofome Egg and Meat carton material as a Wadding materal for various percussion cap&ball revolver charges.
Snake Pellet/ BB loades for C&B revolvers has been on my mind for some time. I will be also conducting tests of various methods of Snake Shot loades to include Pellet/BB loades in Combustable Paper Cartridges made from Thin Bakers Wax Paper for percussion cap&ball revolvers.
Once you get the powder charge dialed-in you could cut a dowel to compress the powder with the rammer
What size shot do you use? I would assume #9 or smaller?
I just made some for 45 acp the other day, exactly like this, but I put a smidgen of glue on the over shot card
Hay Blacky try going to a drug store and get you some pill making jelliton capsules that are about 36 cal. After you have powder and wax seated in a chamber take one half of a jell capsule ( trimmed to properly length) fill capsule with shoot and insert into chamber. If not a tight fit put a wax wad or paper wad on top to stop capsule and shot from falling out. The jell capsule seems to hold the shot longer together like a shotgun wad and won't blow thru the shot. The empty jell capsule's come in a couple different sizes. They worked for me. Thanks for your videos and your info on BP and woods craft.
For shotguns equal weight of powder and shot is a good starting point.
You will find this is pretty matched.
In 12g a 1 ounce / 1 ounce is good.
in 20g it 3/4 to 3/4
I'd say 1/2 oz and 1/2oz is probley a max load for a .44
But I also don't believe in bird shot for snakes.
In my option and experience #4 shot is best for snakes.
Bird shot #7, or #8 is terrible. As is 00 buck.
#6 will work, but #4 is far better.
Never tried #2
Oh and the most interesting shot I used was dried navy beans. It worked at about 10 feet. But not something I'd use unless you have nothing else.
Long story. But the short version is.
The snake was right outside the door.
The only thing I had was a flintlock pistol .68 cal, powder and the navy beans. oh and one angry rattler at the bottom of the steps.
Huh never tried this before. Guess I will have to now. :)
Love your vids. Excellent presentation and content, with plenty of variations. Speaking of such, I have a hat very much similar to the one you have...scalp oils and all...how's about a vid explaining how to get those oils out...i have not figured out how to recondition my hat ! Thnx
Nice
Thanks
Maybe I missed it, what type of shot are you using?
Would like to see this in a test Blackie maybe a soda can or canned food or bake potatoes love ur videos bud thanks 😊
Use'e' the red dot. 6 grains, and primers will work if you add a few specks of powder inside the primer, and or wadding that can hold powder tight to the primer nipple. 6 grains will work well and safe for just about any load in any newly made 1851. And probably quite a bit more but 6 grains of red dot or shotgun powder works well.
I venture that a Dragoon or even a Walker would give you more room to work with in building a birdshot load.
Great video! Never tried it yet, have been meaning to do so. Along these lines, have you or have you seen anyone use the .36 Colt bullet through a .410 shotgun? I currently load BP .410 loads with 3 x .380 balls (full choke gun >.380, I think it's actually .395) and have a lot of fun with these. At 10 yards, will often stack the balls through a single hole, and 15 yards about a 6" spread, and at 20 yards, between 6 and 8 inch spread. With 22 gr pyrodex, the individual balls seem to have more visible destructive force than 9 mm ball rounds through my Canik! Thanks again!
Wassuh my guy
The "Blackie Atackie" 😆 🤣
Sir, this is great, Thank you, and if I may, permission to download? I have been waiting on this, but now that I have seen it, it has left me with even more questions. Have you ever tried heavier shot packed in wax? I am not even close to being as good a shot as you are, so the heavier shot might work for squirrel and rabbits. Maybe, I haven't tried it yet.
Helos watching you Blackie.
I was just thinking about this. As shot rounds are hard to find.
That's a hand cannon right there.
was you useing #9 shot or something smaller?
Should you also use grease on the cylinders to prevent the other cylinders from firing prematurely
Blackie could you use a felt tip wad to put on top ? Or would that cause a problem ?
Great video Blackie even with all the understandable disclaimers and admonishments. I was wondering if a pre-made shot package would work? Similar to Buck and Ball shot wrapped in paper ,minus the "ball". Say just using # 4 , #6 #7 ,etc shot wrapped in a pre made up paper projectile.
I have tried making those but hey will fly to target as a solid ( most of the times)
@@blackoracle69 That is what I suspected THX.
BTW, I have downloaded about 99% of your BP videos and saved them on Jump Drives for all my son and grandsons. Comes to about 5G's . With that and Mike Beliveau's videos I can get some great stocking suffers on 10G drives. Thank you again for your great content.
our 99 cent store sells cork disks on a sheet but they have adhesive on one side.
Would a hard vegetable (cork) wad do the same thing as the paper or does it need it to have some "give" to it?
Every time I go into the wood I load 5shots 3 = round ball or conical and 2 = birdshot.
Ball, birdshot, ball, ball birdshot…
In the 30s my grandfather as a kid in East Texas snuck out the family Colt 32-20 revolver. He wrapped his left hand around the cylinder and let one rip. Said it hurt so bad and was bruised, he stuck his hand in the creek for a while to ease the pain. Lesson learned!!!
yep i saw a 357 held against a leg to brace for a long shot ..it cut thru the heavy canvas pants and gave him 6 stiches to close it
Great story. Someone should do a book or video of collected stories like this. I have a similar story with a Winchester 94 in my early hunting days.
@@Curtislow2- I know your comment is 2 years old but I would love to hear your Winchester 94 story
@@BrockNessMonster1991 It's definitely a great learning story. But not one I am proud to repeat. Lets leave it with how easy it is to have AD using a Win style action.
@@Curtislow2 - haha understood, thank you 🙏🏻
Ask someone who hunts with a black powder shotgun! You load volume for volume loads! Birdshot in a rifle barrel don't work!! The shot spins in a donut pattern around the target!!!
Can you mix cornmeal with the shot under the overshot card as a buffer?
Blackie, my Ruger Old Army shoots high with .45 Colt in a Krist conversion cylinder. Should I have a tall front sight put on it? Of course, this happens at closer ranges. I know the heavier bullets exit the barrel slower and recoil affects the accuracy.
what would be wrong with using felt wads and bb's
they tend to walk forward when you shoot another chamber or in a holster muzzle down the jar of walking can cause them to creap forward
@@blackoracle69 how you fell about bbs too hard on rifling maybe
Have you solved the "donut pattern" problem due to the rifling in the revolver?
I have used gas checks to make a shot column and used 8's ,6's,and 4's from shotgun shells, any work. to buy 9 or 12 shot will be 2 lifetime supply.
Putting shot load in smooth bore pepperbox. Pietta has a single action pepperbox on 36 caliber revolver with elongated cylinder. Would that work for snake loads?
it should
Can you use BB's
What range would you get from this load? Could one get a squirrel 20-30 feet up a tree? Thanks
Do I understand correctly? .36 uses FFFF and .44 is FFF powder with this load?
I wonder how well this would work with 4.5mm bbs
I think I'll just keep snake shot for my smooth bore flintlock pistol
Have you tried a 45 cal shot cup?
It should work.
What if you put wax in with the shot to hold it in better?
That is what I was thinking
Then the shot will hold together all the way to the target, with no spread. This would defeat the purpose of loading it with shot in the first place.
@@James-dq3jo I think as soon as the powder ignites the pressure will separate it all, not sure though.
@@KevinSmith-os5yz It won't. But don't just take my word for it, try it out for yourself (legally & safely, of course).
Wax slugs are made like that for smokeless powder shotguns.
(By taking a cheep bird shot shell and adding wax to the shot to make a cheep slug.)
I want to do this to kill red squirrels at about 6 yards.
I have a 1977 Ruger Old Action Army stainless.
It's a rifled barrel not a smooth bore.
Not sure if that's a problem.
Why not regular wads
what size shoot did you use?
#8
I just asked this....sorry..lol
Thanks, at today's shot prices, I can't buy a hole lot of bags of shot to play with. And as you did all the research and testing,I want to tap into your thoughts.
I wanted to see what it did to a tatter.
If black powder revolvers were a religion you would be it's god!!! Thank you
It is, he is.
I may of missed it. What shot size are you using, or prefer?
#8 is my usual choice
Wouldn't this destroy the rifling or no? The only way I'd see that this wouldn't damage the rifling is if you use lead shot but even then if you're shooting lead shot all the time I assume it'd ruin the rifling.
Lead shot is perfectly fine. It's really soft. Definitely will need to really scrub the barrel though if you put a lot through. Or just shoot some regular rounds through after and I found it cleans it up good.
