As an aspiring teenage conga player in New York in the 1960s I was completely blown away when my friend Tito put an album titled "Cachao and His Afro Cuban All Stars" on the player and Descarga Cubana began with that terrific Lopez double bass lick. Then Tata Guines began his intro solo. Up until then I'd only heard Candido and Mongo and a few others. Tata Guines' solos were completely different . Had to have that record so I bought one the next day. Also learned what "descarga meant". Long story short, in a few years I stopped playing drums and began earning a living, but I believe "once a drummer, always a drummer" so when the music is playing I'm always listening to how the drums fit in. I admire your work.
Before the was Changuito, Giovanni, El Panga, Papiosco, or anyone star Conguero we can think of, first came Tata Guines! Tata was one of the first to develop real technique on the Conga before it was a thing. Good work on exposing the masses to these masters 🙌🏽
Well said. I was about to say something like that and then I figured lets review the comments and you nailed it. There is a reason why all those guys on that list all say Tata Guines was their influence. And do not forget the late great Anga, Miguel Anga Diaz. Whom also credits Tata Guines, in fact it was reading about Anga Diaz that made me look into Tata Guines. Thank you for your post.
I love your work. every time I see your videos and sometimes I'm one or 2 weeks behind but when I get around watching again it gives me a lot of Energy to work on my drums I love you bro thanks a lot
A++++++ conga video! I love your videos & guiding me to better bongo conga playing that is what I need in my life. Your videos have helped me to improve my playing while enjoying it!
Oh yeah! You just gotta love it! I'll get started on that tomorrow! Looking forward to our surprise on Monday! Thanks so much, Eric, you're the best! 🎼🎵🎶🎼
Hey, watching "Tata" can make you want to run out and buy a set of drums....or stay as far away from them as you can..Lol, hey love your video's I'm hooked. ✌
Dear Eric, my wife became jealous, she says I pay more attention to your tutorials than her. Besides the joke thanks a lot for sharing your teaching it's so helpful! Look forward for future videos one-e- and two etc
I can clearly see your progression as a conguero as you continue your journey . I am grateful that you are sharing it with us . Also ,I appreciate that you are still using the original skins . I think it is important to focus on developing skill and technique .Buy new skins when necessary . Spending money on upgrades will not make you a better musician . Save your money and make an investment in practice time for the best results .Again , keep em coming !.
Tremenda clase Eric.
Random question brotha but do you by chance do one on one video lesions for a small fee lol? Jus wondering because sometimes it hard to keep pausing to pick up on something I fill I miss key parts or movements or jus not keeping up good ha ha ha I slow very new at this I ha e been wonting to learn for a long time finally able to. Hope u have a blessed day my brotha one love.
I wish there was a way on your videos to hear you just play the piece so I can hear it, see it, and practice it quickly, so I don't have to go through all the breaking down and talking parts. I like that you seem to usually play the piece right after the add, but here you only play like one measure slowed down! Please play for longer at slower speed so I can get this without having to watch for 15 minutes! I love that you spend time to explain the person and history involved too, but I want to be able to practice from your vids more easily, and I can pick it up just by watching it.
Saludos hermano. Would appreciate if you can do a video covering the technique of Latin Jazz master Jerry Gonzalez. He recently passed on October 1st. He and his brother bassist Andy Gonzalez are big contributors to the latin jazz idiom for the past 50 something years and have performed with the greats like Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri etc. Jerry's style was pretty unique so I would be intrigue to see/hear your take. Thanks maestro. Keep doing your thing it's all love. Ciao!
Te amo Tata!!! I am Tata...you are Tata...we are all Tata! Nice Break Down...Thank you again, Eric!!! Here, btw, is my favorite Tata Guines video ruclips.net/video/0jLZ09Ue31I/видео.html Tata "El Fity" is introduced @ 2:34 with Lucumi.

Does this work over both claves? Or just 3-2? It works better over 3-2 but can it be both?
This would certainly add a good dash of spicey if one can get up to speed on it....cheers Eric
