So that's what it is! I've been trying to approach this cinematic look for some time now but never realised it could be achieved with a diffusion filter. Gorgeous photos!
Yes sir! There are other ways to get this look too. You can get an old UV Filter and smear a small amount of Vaseline (or nose grease as some people will recommend) and that will give you a blurrier look. Perfect for dreamier scenes. Cinematographers used to “Net the Lens” meaning they would put some white or black netting over the lens and it had the same effect. So grabs some fish-nets and get creating haha
@@PhotoCinematica That is really helpful! I'd love it if you could make a video outlining all of these things that make a still photo look cinematic ❤️
@@PhotoCinematica thank you for the instructive video, very helpful. Although, could you link that step up ring pls 🙏 . I hope one that I get featured on Photo Cinematica, definitely my top 3 reference photos page ☺️
Great video, very informative. I've been looking at the K&F equivalents of these. Step up rings are a good idea, however weird 77mm on a 43mm thread will look haha.
I got mine last week, but unfortunately I haven't got the chance to try it yet. stoked to see what kind of images it can produce combined with the sirui 35mm anamorphic (which hopefully it will get shipped in the next couple of weeks). great video and lovely images, keep it up!
@@PhotoCinematica I do have a question. Do you understand the difference between the black/white/other types of halation filters? And which Tiffen were you using for your shots?
If I’m not mistaken, the colour (black, white etc) is talking about the colour of the texture on the glass used to diffuse. White texture will give the image a lighter glow and the “warm” will add a warmer glow to the highlights. Here I was using the Black Pro-Mist
Ahhh I'm so torn between the choices! I'm thinking of getting a Tiffen BPM but I'm really unsure wether I I should choose 1/8 or 1/4 (sadly both is not quite in my budget). I'm shooting a short film in December and I think the effect could make the A7iii's footage looks a bit less digital. But I also don't want it to be too much :/ And now Moment released their CineBloom filter which also looks super interesting! What are your thoughts? I want the effect to be subtle but also not too subtle - I think you get the struggle hahah :,D
I think the 1/4 is a good balance and looks great in the day and sometimes too much at night. Maybe the 1/8 is the way to go if you’re shooting at night?
@@PhotoCinematica Hmm ok, the film will have both day and night scenes, so that's not going to make my choice easier, but I'm tending to go for the 1/8🤔 Thanks for your insight!🙌🏼
I use the 1/8 from time to time, definitely should give it a shot at night though. Feels like a great look :) I often found it too intense indoors during the day the highlight blooms really take over the image even on the 1/8.
You can make a DIY pro-mist filter with a hair spray and an UV filter. Just spray it from about 30 cm on the side facing the inside. It's gonna last forever and gives you a quite similar result to other filters. it won't be as good as a Tiffen or a Moment Cinebloom. But is a nice option if you wanna try this kind of effect
I got my Tiffen BPM 1/4 last week and did my first photoshoot with it last Sunday, I absolutely love the effect and the feel it gives to the pictures but I agree that sometimes it's a bit too much. Maybe sometime in the future I'll buy the 1/8 to have both options, but for now I'm really happy with my purchase and really excited to see what I can do with it.
Did you get to try a Schneider Hollywood black magic? I'm looking into Moment Cinebloom instead of the tiffen BPM, but the Schneider sounds interesting, yet not a lot of footage to find.
It is indeed funny. I bought the black pro mist 1/4 back and January and I decided, in random, to make a couple of videos for it just now. And then I realised that they have become quite popular in the last couple of months. In any case. Nice video. I should take it out for some night street photography as well.
I have the Tiffin black promise filter 1/4 I was wondering how to make my images look more like a film primarily cine still 800 u nailed the look bro not just of cine still but film what do u do in post process could u plz make a video
Thank you for this great video, would you share the name of the music at the beginning 0:26 until 0:33s? I love this sound and would like to have the full track.
Hey! Awesome video I’ve been wanting to know how to create this cinematic look for some time! I was wondering, I use the Leica Q which has a fixed 28mm lens, do they make those filters for 28mm?
@@PhotoCinematica yeah I had a quick google and it turns out it has a 49mm thread! I’ve ordered a tiffen black pro mist 1/4 for my Leica. Excited to get stuck in with it, thanks again!
I get that these kind of filters can "protect" harsh highlights while adding that glow, but is there a advantage of using a diffusion filter over underexposing to protect highlights and adding glow or soft focus etc in post? Thats my typical workflow right now, but i've been eying these filters for awhile.
To be honest I’m not too sure, but I feel like I can usually tell when a blur or similar effect has been added after in comparison to an in-camera effect
Amazing shots, great job! I am looking to buy a 1/8 filter, do you have any experience with it, or any of you guys in the comments? I am scared this 1/4 will be too much, but this 1/8 I would like to use more even in daylight. Any advice? Thanks
I heard that the longer is the focal length of the lens the more intense is the effect. Have you tried with a zoom lens and test if the intensity varies?
I haven’t actually tried this! I used a 35 and an 85 in this but couldn’t see a difference as a result of the focal length. But I imagine a more compressed image would make the halation seem more severe
I got a cheap diffusion filter called Cokin Diffuser 1, since you can't get Tiffen's anywhere here in Poland. It's way cheaper but I wouldn't recommend it as an alternative, cause it just blurs the image as if your lens was dirty 😅. Still, I paid very little for it so no regrets :) P.S. another great video Jack! Love this channel👏🏻

I'm curious but how did you design your intro and credits shots? I really liked the moving film look of the intro and the font and style you used.
All made in premiere pro! Using scale and key frames 👌🏼
@@PhotoCinematica Cool thank you, Really dope work! You should do tutorial videos for this, your aesthetic is immaculate!
great vid! Do you make the opening animation on adobe premiere or AE?
Premiere! Nothing too complicated ✌🏼
@@PhotoCinematica Cool! A pretty neat trick that you try in AE is add jitter to the text which really adds to the nostalgia
I heard you say "daisychain" do you work in anything audio related?
I don’t haha

I think the 1/8 is probably the one for you. It won’t be as intense at night and will add a nice softness to your day shots 👍🏼
Thank you, love your stuff, cheers 😎
Would the 1/4 Tiffen be closer to 10 or 20% moment diffusor? Great video mate
Not sure to be honest. I would go 10% if you’re not sure. I find that sometimes it’s too much
@@PhotoCinematica Cool thanks man. Just bought the 1/4, I don’t mind getting wild with it 🥴
How do you find the size you need based on the lenses?
I’ve a: Sony E PZ 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6
It should say on the front of your lens. Usually has a circle with a diagonal line through to symbolise it
@@PhotoCinematica • yes! Thanks a lot, I always wondered what that was 🙏
It’s usually on the lens cap too.
I'll take your step up suggestion one further: buy filters BIGGER than your biggest lens. so you can stack filters without vignetting.
What don’t do you use for your intro?
I heard that the longer is the focal length of the lens the more intense is the effect. Have you tried with a zoom lens and test if the intensity varies?
I haven’t actually tried this! I used a 35 and an 85 in this but couldn’t see a difference as a result of the focal length. But I imagine a more compressed image would make the halation seem more severe
I've done my own black pro mist filter by waving a standard UV filter through the spray paint of a black spray can
That’s awesome! Did it work?
bangers at 2:14!

Ah that’s a shame! Still good as a last resort I imagine! Cheers Dániel ✌🏼✌🏼
gorgeous pictures! do you shoot with or without a tripod at night? ps love your channel!
Hey! Cheers! These are all handheld. Rarely use a tripod for my digital photos at night unless I’m after something specific 👌🏼
Love it! Really hesitating between the 1/4 and 1/8 versions :s considering their prices I’d rather pay only once haha
Do you think you’ll shoot more day or night photos/video?
@@PhotoCinematica I’m buying this filter for night shoots only. I actually purchased the two 😏 whoops
Good choice ✌🏼
Are you using a filter for this talking head video?
I went with another brand as I found Cinebloom radiates too far across the entire photo instead of keeping the bloom nearer to he source of light.
Who did you go with?
Get those effects with a cheap plastic Holga M adapted lens. Halatian galore
Are u saying that everybody that uses diffusion filters saw it from you and copied u? 🤣
Not quite. I was saying that at the time of making this video, there was a bit of a boom in videos about filters so I wanted to add my thoughts ✌🏼
