Hello, in this video I show you how I fix my 1999 Audi a4 2.8 quattro tiptronic. When I bought the car a few months ago I noticed that when I put the shifter into tiptronic mode, it would not activate the tiptronic. This I found out was because my car was missing a magnet, and therefore would not recognize that I was shifting it into tiptronic. There are plenty of DIY's on the internet but I found no videos, so I made one myself :). Here is a link to a very helpful DIY: forums.vwvortex.com/showthread...
This should work with VW Passats's between the years of 1997-2001 with tiptronic as well as other Audi's with tiptronic. Please comment with any questions.

Go Timbers Tiptronic Army Audi! Nice! While you have the plate off, you can also pop the plastic indicator lens piece out of the ovals (heat it with hair dryer to release) and take some sandpaper to that pitted chrome for the "brushed" look. Not my fave look, but super easy improvement over the dinged up chrome. Mine could use re-brushing almost 3 years later, but you can see it in my cruddy tiptronic fluid change vid.

Thanks for this vidoe its inspired me again to try and fix my sons Mercedes Auto gearbox. This is the problem I have with a Mercedes CLS. Im thinking it may be a similar issue however on the mercedes you pull it all the way back to engage drive and then just nudged it left or right to change up or down however no matter how much I nudge it left ot right it just stays in drive. The gear lever travel in the left and right mode is so little Im not sure that Mercedes uses a magnet or not!!!! And help much appreciated.

If you break it you can just use a zip tie in the metal flat part of the sifter from metal and pull up the plastic piece under then the car will still work like if you had the button stuck but the interlock will not protect the transmission from accidentally dropping in reverse while in drive and driving you have to be carefull or until you replace it and also maybe just epoxy glue long thin super permanet magnets cut in to the stick also to have triotinic as alternative.

    Hallo,

Miguel Morales If either of those cars have tiptronic then definitely go pull the magnets. They should be less than $5-$10 each. I don't think there is anything specific about the magnets and so they should work for your car.

If your jetta's automatic shift assembly looks similar than it should be the same. I think 2003 may be too new thought and it might be somewhat different. I pulled my magnets out of a passat at a junkyard I believe it was a 2002.

If the magnets aren't missing than you may have a different problem. Or it may just be that your magnets are situated wrong. Also, make sure the magnets are still magnetic by touching a screwdriver to them.

    I have a 2002 audi a6 Quattro 2.7t Automatic
I started off with 2 codes and no check engine light I ran the computer, It was the Torque converter and a #2 Cylinder misfire. I could feel it kicking while driving so I replaced the spark plugs, checked the cylinder pressure with the tool it was at 130 supposed to be at 140 if correct my mechanic said it was fine , I gaped them all at 0.28 Torqued them all to 22lb. I Checked the coil packs and boots, They looked fine to me so I didn't replace those. The 2 codes went away, but when i was idling I can still feel a little kick every now and then, hmm?? After that..
    No check engine light
No codes pop up I drove it 50 miles+ before I ran the computer with the diagnostic scanner.
The car is in limp mode
PRNDS light stay on don't flash
When I start the car the PRNDS works in Drive if I put it there first but if I put it in Reverse after starting it up it goes striaght to limp mode again, because when I start it up and put the shifter straight to drive it will work for a little before it goes back in limp mode It first started with the tip tronic before any of the codes started now its in limp mode With the PRNDS all in red?? Any help or advise on where to start I try to do the work I can myself.
The Yellow coolant light is the center LCD screen were the service indicator is located in the center of the dash.
I'm pretty sure I have a leak in the coolant resavor. I can see the build up next to the front hose connected to the coolant resavor, and the yellow oil light indicater. For that one I think its the oil senser??
Any help for my situation will be much appreciated thank you.

Hey, does your lights on your dashboard light up since the magnet was broke? Cause My shift indicator has all the gears illuminated and shifts into drive perfect. But triptronic doesn't work at all can it still be the magnets or a Sensor?

Derek LaFountain When my tiptronic was broked, it would not show gears 1-5 on the dashboard. It would only show the automatic P,R,N,D. Once I fixed my tiptronic, it would show numbers 1-5 on the dashboard once shifted into tipronic mode. Does that make sense? I can try to explain better if needed.

Noob Mechanic when it shows PRND did it also show you which one you were on? i.e if you were reversing then it shows in dashboard R only without the other ones lighting up with a red square?

    Hi
I am sure you know what you are doing but after watching this I feel dizzy .
I think you should have some one hold the camera while you are performing.
    Cheers

why you need to have this magnet at the first place?

    • @Jacob190000
      @Jacob190000  10 лет назад

It tells your car when you want it to go in to Tiptronic mode. When the magnets touch, it sends a signal to your cars computer letting it know to switch to tiptronic.

If I wanted to be a purist, what would a new magnet assembly cost from an Audi dealer? I will be sure to bring a large tube of KY jelly with me!
