Another name would be paint chips like you get at the hardware store
I'm thinking of sewing it on point with whole background 6.5" blocks to avoid some cutting and sewing. It'll make a smoother quilt to quilt on a domestic machine while also saving time.
That's exactly what I was thinking from the very beginning. Most definitely would save time with cutting, sewing and fabric
I agree with you but was wondering how you work out what size to cut your squares for the perimeter and corners
Louise, I think it’s called Pi (a math term). But do not quote me as I’m pulling it out of thin air. (Lol!). Multiply your block size by 1.414 and that’s the diagonal size to cut the side pieces. Please someone chime in and help with this. As I’m only about 12.5% sure of what I’m proposing. I’ve always found the quilting community to be lovely and warm. Hoping for the answers to appear soon! Happy sewing.
That's exactly what I was going to reply.

It's hard to believe that such a simple block could make such an impressive quilt!
That's exactly what I was thinking! 😊
I have been sewing for 55+ years - quilting for maybe 30?! ? Never thought about how much easier it would be to sew my finger pressed pieces fold-to-fold rather than peak-to-peak. This old dog is still learning new tricks! Thank you!
I see Jenny doing what I’ll call a square in a square @ 3:20. At first glance I thought this was 6 1/2” blocks created w a variegated Jellyroll, then background cut the same size and simply sewn as rows, on point. Then one wouldn’t necessarily need to make these as squares in a square. Lovely quilt! Happy sewing!
That is what I thought, too. I think that would be easier and maybe a little faster to.
I thought so, too. Much faster and easier. Still, it's a pretty look.
@@gracebalchThat is how I would do it and just use side setting triangles.
All I thought was “why”? All the blocks are now bias. Also it becomes over pieced IMHO. nice quilt, though!
Beautiful quilt. I’ve been working on a similar quilt (London Roads) with blocks set on point, but instead of those triangles the pattern uses full squares, which is easier and faster.
And no bias
I adore your tutorials. You, Natalie, and Misty make everything easy to understand and give son many of use inspiration and motivation. I'm so glad I found you 10+ years ago when I was making my very first quilt after my divorce. I'll be here for life and shopping with MSQC for life.
I love the color play. What a fun project!😊
What I love about this type of block is that you can use fat quarters instead of jellyrolls. I've got access to a lot of FQs in my area, and they're financially easier for me.
I love this quilt!! Happy 🎉4th everyone
Hi Jenny: I got your new book from the library!😊 I love it! As a begiinner your encourging advice was great! The story of your journey and your family made me melt! Thank for your book.❤❤❤
I loved the tip about how to make the block on point!! Now I know to cut a piece 1” larger than my block to get the right size HST!!
Happy fourth of July everyone at MStar . Hope you all had an amazing amazing Day today love your videos Jenny . Hey Jenny I would love for you guys to offer the free patterns for us to download for free. ❤
Feels almost illegal to be this early! Beautiful quilt and fun colors!
This is a gorgeous quilt!
Pretty quilt! I would love to make this. Everyone has preferance on how to sew and cut. Jenny your tutorials started me quilting. Thank you for another great pattern and tutorial.❤🎉
amazing
Thanks Jenny!
Beautiful quilt Jenny! Your tutorials are always so helpful. I’ve learned so much from watching your videos over the years. You are a treasure!! Thank you for all you do!! 😊❤️
An accessible quilt for sure! Great project once again, Jenny!
I love the little wreath that surrounds the friendship star!!!
Such a beautiful quilt 🩵 it is definitely going to be one that I will make. God bless you Jenny and family (MSQC), for all the time you take to do what you do.
❤
Thank you Jenny. These videos helped me cope during the pandemic, and they continue to set me at ease each week. ❤
Love this!
Great job, Jenny. I always love a free bonus project with the extra blocks. It’s great to have a spare table runner which makes a cute gift if you need one quickly. Many thanks for all of these quilt tutorials you have done through the years to teach us and inspire us.
Great idea for a quick easy gift and good for any beginner.
Just lovely, Jenny and team, special shout put to Ron. Hugs all, Chel 🌸
Love this quilt but I think I would make it with 6.5 inch black and set the whole thing on the diagonal. Yes you have setting triangles but less cutting and sewing.
Very nice quilt. I love the gradient of each block.
Just mine kind of quilt. Easy!
I am making this with some Jolly Bars I've had stashed away for a while. It's been a lot of fun to sew and quite easy. I agree with Jenny, sew your four color blocks together vs. a row at a time. I also increased my background squares to 8/8.5 which I found gave me ample room to make sharp points. Love this pattern!
I love this Quilt. When you showed the runner, it occurred to me that you could make runners in each colour or two of the colours to give as gifts. Thanks!
Hi Jenny, love all your tutorials. I also have a hard time with color placement sometimes and call on my husband to help with placement. I have some jelly rolls and I will make this quilt.
What a beautiful quilt. I think a boarder would have taken away from the blocks, so glad you didn't add one. Thank you Jenny for another great tutorial.
I love the quilt😍😍😍
What a fun quilt. Thank you Jenny.
Love this!!!
So pretty thank you Jenny❤
Jenny you are so amazing. I love watching you. This quilt is beautiful. ❤
Thank you Jenny for the tutorial.
Wow such a beautiful tutorial I love the colour nice sharing
It's gorgeous
Gorgeous colors!
Take a picture of the quilt once you've laid it out and perhaps that will help you see the fabric gradations. I do it to be sure I haven't turned a triangle wrong and for color placement. Love Missouri star tutorials. Want to try this one too! Thanks!
Loved that quilt. Can't wait to make it. Thank you
Quilt looks great but it would go together much simpler with the same size background square and layout colours as needed for gradient♥️🇦🇺
Jenny, love you guys' creativity and generosity with these quilts ideas. This is lovely and I will probably try it using ombre fabric instead of jelly rolls and assembling on diagonal not straight. I don't do well with bias edges 😢.
Love it!!!!
Jenny!
You can just cut 6.5" squares and do checkerboard pattern....you just cut along the edges at the end, cutting off the triangles that stick out.
There's no bias stretch to worry so much about!. Just need to add a triangle to the 4 corners of the quilt top to finish!
Gorgeous ❗️✂️🪡🧵
Jenny- this is such a pretty quilt. I ordered the Wilmington Essentials Dry Brush Stone Summit jelly roll yesterday. I was thinking View from Above- but maybe I'll make this... I do appreciate a dark background.
Love this one..
Great idea and great quilt.
❤
Why would you cut the black squares into triangles? Could you not just join them as a whole square?
My thoughts exactly. Just cut 6 1/2" black squares and sew the blocks together in a diagonal line. You would only need the large triangles on the sides and corners.
My thoughts exactly, but i know Jenny doesn’t normally do “on point”.
I’ve known quilters who were terrified of the idea of setting things on point. They didn’t like having to deal with the side & corner triangles, also weren’t comfortable with the diagonal rows. This method give a nice alternative.
It's beautiful, but why wouldn't you just sew the brown squares next to the 3-piece squares everywhere except the ends?
If I made this, I would cut the black in squares and sew the rows diagonally. A lot less seams involved.
How would this look with a white or cream color instead of black I'm trying to find a cute girl baby quilt please help
That would be very cute!
Depending on your Jelly Roll a nice blush (very light pink) would be pretty, too.
If that is not an option, I personally, would prefer a cream color. The colors would still come out nicely, but a bit softer as with a stark white background.
Take care - Europe ⚘
I agree with the masses! Why cut and sew all those black triangles?!?!?!
I wondered that too!
😊
Can you assemble the black block like Natalie did where you cut the square onto block and then cut the X opening. Then iron back.
You lose the points when you do the X method.
Not a fan of solids, but I think it would look nice with prints and some tonal where the black squares are.
Do you pre-wash jelly rolls?
I don’t pre-wash any pre-cuts (jelly rolls, layer cakes, charm squares etc) due to fraying, primarily, as even pinked edges can fray. And the extra workload of washing.
Actually I don’t pre-wash any fabrics for quilting unless they’re already dirty or likely to run. I like the crinkly look when quilts shrink a bit in the first wash and most fabrics seem to shrink similar amount.
I do tend to wash fabric for garments because, if they shrink after they’re made up, the end result can be unusable - unlike quilts!
Happy sewing 🧵
❤❤❤
Why didn’t you just use 6 1/2 inch blocks for background and then do just triangle on outside
Yup!
🔥🌿👍🏽👍
where is the links to buyh?

Jenny should really quit teaching people to cut the squares diagonally both ways. It creates 4 bias edges. You should only cut them across one time. New quilters may not know any better.
Wow, that's a lot of unnecessary work! Sew squares on point. Duh. 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Not everyone can handle doing it on point. It can be more time consuming, especially if you are not sure/or are afraid of getting things mixed up. At least if you are laying things out in a square like Jenny did, you are least likely to go wrong. My first on point quilt was very frustrating for me and I made a lot of mistakes in my layout. And I was trying to be super careful. As Jenny says, it all depends on how your brain works.
