We all studied at Neil Peart University. Such long hours of listening to great, carefully thought out drum parts. Neil has been studied more than most rock drummers. Bonham as well. Syncopation and substance. Odd meters are great. Thanks for sharing and great informative lesson.

Love this song as well as the simplicity of your breakdown. Looking forward to part 2!
00:52 you summed up succinctly what is so great about Neil Peart
Great video man best lesson on youtube. Short and simple and to the point
Thanks! very informative I connected with the way you went through the breakdown. Can't wait for part 2!! :)
Fantastic lesson. Love the clave references.
Great video, thank you very much !!!!
Nice job bro 😎
Very good stuff. I just started on this song. I love the clave concept for counting it. Seems much more natural.
Correct, about Neil's last name, but incorrect regarding the pronunciation of the song name.
it's YY Zed. (Canadian/English pronunciation, for a Canadian airport) :-)
Yeah Dave... You and Krieger from Archer make it a compelling argument. That is actually an argument I've heard from Rush fans forever! In, the US it's pronounced YY ZEE but in Canada they say YY Zed. It's "Zed" because of the airport code... but its "Zee" because the intro spells YYZ in Morse code. lol Personally I believe "Zed" is probably more accurate... It's probably how the guys in Rush say it... But I've been saying ZEE for 30 years, so old habits die hard. Thanks David.
Yeah, yeah... I know... but I've been saying YYZ my whole life and am not changing now :-P
“Zed”... you dork! Who cares. Lol
it's y y z, not y y zee
I loved this video! Can you do the same with red Barchetta please?
GOOD VIDEO!
could you breakdown LED BOOTS , jeff beck thanks
The beat was made by translating YYZ into Morse code and playing it
-.-- -.-- --..
That's sick
Enjoying your vids (P.S. the graphic doesn't show a kick your playing on the count of 3)
Its funny how something that sounds so hard to time out with your ear falls back to basic math.
I'm not very intelligent but I can play this song accurately without understanding time signatures or counting "1 e and a" or whatever. Anyone else?
Same
Thanks! Not perfect, but pretty close: www.dropbox.com/s/fu4dbb7mtcuncqb/YYZ_Rush_Chad_Drums.wav?dl=0
6.07-6.45 you write 4 kicks (as neil peart does) but you play 6 kicks...
Interesting... In what way do you see 6 kicks? I'm playing on the & of 1, the E of 3, and the &A of beat 5. Where are you hearing another two kicks?
To make it easier..study Morse Code
the Slight pronunciation variation in his last name isn't really that important really. I believe its more of a preference if someone wants or chooses to be technically correct to pronounce it how Neil does or weather its a more relaxed looser pronunciation as in "Pert" or Peeart , but its a common occurrence ,the correction of how people feel his name should be pronounced. Taking the time to express how you feel is the correct way to pronounce it wether right or wrong isn't going to change how the majority of people pronounce it. Maybe over the coarse of 30 years it may funnel down into a few generations & by that point we will be gone …...but.....Atleast they will be pronouncing Rush's drummer name correctly.
Neil dosent make the drum parts Getty and Alex do
No, Neil does. Sometimes Geddy and Alex will use a drum machine as they write some parts as a guide, but Neil always writes his own parts.
Actually, Getty and Alex are responsible for the music and lyrics, but Neil absolutely rights his own drum parts... and literally writes them out.
