  • This is my test version for making a slip clutch chuck used for building fishing rods. I already have thought of improvements, but this one actually works quite well so it may be a while before I get around to trying something different.
    I do realize that there is a manufacturer who makes similar chucks for about $60 and I am sure they are fantastic. I was able to make mine for about $4 (the only items I had to buy were the PVC pipe cap, nylon washers and the bolt and lock nut). It probably isn't as nice but it is very functional.

      Thanks and good luck to you on making one! I am working on a new project you may be interested in too. It will use a spindle with bearings and a similar slip clutch chuck with a few changes. Some of the work I did here isn't 100% necessary. I would say you do need to remove the raised text from the bottom to make it smooth. You could do that with sandpaper on a flat surface instead.

    Nice. I thought of making something like this but don't have a lathe to machine the cup. Is it absolutely necessary to machine the cup? Can I use a pvc cap without the hex head? I think I'll use a piece of rubber inner tube instead of the packing material for longevity. Thanks for the ideas. 👍

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  4 года назад

      It is not necessary to machine the PVC cap and any cap will work. The tricky part is getting the hole in the cap centered reasonably well. I think you may like this idea I had a while back even better than the chuck in this video. It works great and is really easy to make too: ruclips.net/video/izd9-TLajbY/видео.html

    I'd like to know more about your rod holders you're using on the machine. What are they made out of?

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  7 лет назад

      Scott Trahey are you talking about the yellow and green part that supports the rod blank? If so the wood blocks and the plastic yellow circles and the green rod are all kid's toys I found at a thrift store. I glued the toy blocks together, drilled a hole in the wood block that was a tight fit for the green rod and it is just a friction/tight fit. the yellow disks fit the green rod tightly as well. The yellow disks can be repositioned as needed and they won't move unless you move them with a little force. I do not know what they are called but they worked well for a support. The plastic doesn't scratch the rod blanks either.

    Would a rubber flat washer work like the cork friction disk?

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  2 года назад

      Wouldn't hurt to try, but I usually use rubber washers to create more friction where cork tends to be slicker.

    What is the length of the 1/2" bolt and how is it attached to the drying motor. Thanks

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  3 года назад

      I just drilled it out and piece of wire through it later on. My motor has a hole in the shaft that the wire goes through to hold it onto the shaft.

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  3 года назад

      Oh, the bolt was either 2" or 2.5"

    Instead of the foam holder, try making one out of scrap tire innertube rubber.

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  7 лет назад

      John Santos that is a great suggestion. I actually did try that and the problem I had was cutting the hole. I had a hard time cutting the rubber cleanly. If you punch the hole first, then it about impossible to get it centered. I got good results with a thick latex glove. The problem with those is that they have to be replaced frequently. The slip commercial slip clutch chucks use neoprene rubber and I think that would be the best solution, I just didn't have any on hand. I may look at buying some in the future.

      I just traced a dime on mine and cut it out with scissors. Not as perfect as your work but it works for a homemade rod dryer I made. Probably not perfectly centered, but it holds the handle well.

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  7 лет назад

      You know, that gives me an idea! Next time you make a new rubber piece or you need a different sized one, go ahead and install it and then turn on your rod dryer and allow it to rotate. Then just use a white or silver colored marker and hold it in a stationary position against the tube as it rotates. that will give you a perfectly centered and marked circle to cut with your scissors. Seems like that would work out really well and I may try that next time myself. Thanks for the inspiration! If you try it that way, let me know how it works out for you.

      @@TheFishingHobby do that but instead use a brand new x-acto knife and blade and cut hole that way instead of using white or silver pen or pencil

      Seems excessive, doesn't it 😆
      I already owned the lathe, definitely wouldn't have bought it to make just this item. I actually own 2 metal working lathes now...they are kind of addictive so proceed with caution!

      @@TheFishingHobby it's definitely on the list of tools I want. I was checking your video out because I used to build rods for a shop forever ago, and now I've accumulated a few that just need a few repairs. I'm too cheap to just buy one, so I'll probably just make it myself.

      @@MrGibsn1960 Good luck with that and the repairs on the rods! I like repairing/restoring/rebuilding rods. Not as easy as starting with a fresh blank, but I really like some of the old glass blanks.
