Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup ruclips.net/user/postUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.

Thanks for the tip on double guide wrapping and the cottons. Never thought about doing a double overwrap on the guides before. Just finishing off a build at the moment, rebuilt my ZZIPLEX beach caster. Removed the fixed reel seat and changed for a sliding reel seat so I can have the reel near the bottom of the butt section which makes it easier to pendulum cast. Took all the handles off and used an X-wrap style heat shrink instead. Added new ZZIPLEX decals and new guides, high gloss rod varnish. Did a blue under-wrap (A) with a white inlay (2 wraps) (A) with a black over-wrap (D). Will try a double over-wrap on my next build. Just waiting for the CRB drying tent to arrive from France to UK and bought a 100w enclosure heater 230v to pop inside the drying tent. Great videos. When you do the underwrap for a double-foot guide, do you give it a real light coat of a thinned out thread finish before putting the guide on? Or are you putting the guide right on the underwrap thread?
Hello mate. Great video, very helpful gonna have my first go at whipping roller eyes on and have one question, do you have to do an under wrap first on a roller eye 60-80 lb class rod. Cheers.
If I choose to keep the true color of the thread should I add color preserver on my regular nylon thread vs using pre-treated thread. Also does one method cause more issues with bubbles in epoxy?
All great questions and I am actually releasing a video next Monday on this topic. Please watch it and let me know what you think. That being said, yes, if you want to keep the original color of regular thread than you can use a color preserver, 3-4 coats. Once you put your finish on, be sure to use your torch to remove air bubbles. Hope this helps.
On heavier saltwater rods would such a technique be necessary on the ferrules too? Or could I get away with a longer single layer wrap and two coats of finish? Could it be done without affecting the action of the rod too much ? Thank you
@@sebbosaurus - up to you, and the rod your building. If I’m double over wrapping with D size thread it is most likely a one piece rod, but I would match the ferrule wrap if it’s a two piece rod - single wrap.
Terrific video, thank you. I'm getting ready to redo a couple of old 6'6" rods (25+ years old) from the ground up. I want to match the eye wraps to some others I have. They have a dark blue metalic under wrap (much like what you show) with gold trim bands in the center and on either end. The eye is wrapped with black thread. Seems a simple enough wrap for a first timer. Based on your information and as this is a 40-50lb rod with medium-heavy guides, I'll be double wrapping the black. I do have a question though. I'm trying to pick out the correct metalic threads using pro-wrap. I did some stop frame analysis of your video and it looks like the 'D' size blue metalic has a SKU of RNM-D so I'm at the right color chart. The problem the color chart is terrible, I can't make out any metallics in it. Any chance you know the name of the color??
Doesn't having to constantly release more thread from the spool drive you nuts? Surely it's possible to adjust the spool tension spring so that long, flexiible guide draws it off automatically.
@@ianb4801 - great question Ian, and some times I just like to have the tension tighter when I am trying to control how tight the thread is wrapped. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Nope. I know some people do that, but I do not. I try to make sure I apply enough epoxy on my first application to ensure it seeps through all the threads. This is another reason why I don’t use color preserver as well.
Makes it too difficult to then secure the guide in place from my experience. Plus it is also unnecessary weight. On top of that it would cause uneven epoxy with it being thicker on the bottom
