I have carried a 640 J frame for 25 years in my career as a state constable and police officer in Pennsylvania. It was my backup weapon, and then it became my primary carry for off duty. It has been effective in situations where I had to produce a weapon to stop criminal activities while off duty. It is ultra concealable. I've carried it on my ankle, side, and my favorite pocket carry. These are fantastic weapons. And I will continue to carry it

I have a 640 pro, and I agree. It is my favorite j frame, and one of my favorite handguns. I carry it everyday, and I don't think the full loads are that bad. Then again, I put the crimson trace stocks on it, and they help. This revolver works perfectly, it has tritium sights, and it looks gorgeous. I'm thinking of getting another one just to carry two at the same time.

I'm retired law enforcement and revolvers are all I carry. I carry a 4 inch Model 10 and a 442 Centennial Airweight as back up. The 640 Pro is an awesome piece, but I'd likely carry 38s in it. I just dont think the weight of the Pro is worth it. I carry Underwood Ammo's 150 full wadcutters in my 442 and their 158+P in my model 10. The full wadcutter load is an excellent load for me because expansion in a J Frame is touch and go. The New York reload helps negate the capacity issue of my carry choices. If I was still a cop, I would possibly go with an auto. As a civilian, my job is to avoid danger at all costs.

oh for sure! I remember years ago (I believe I did vids on it) I tried my hand at a Colt Mustang XSP in the pocket. I thought it was working well (nice and flat also) and a nice compliment to a 1911 but it soon malfunctioned on me and I just never felt the same even though it was only a handful of times and most likely ammo related... the j-frame just makes me feel secure haha

  • @taasch2505

I keep practicing drawing from various positions between my Snubbies and my Subcompacts and simply put I draw the DAO snubbies faster than the ones with spurred hammers and I draw both faster than a semi auto. But sometimes the spur gets hooked and if I am in close quarters in the convenience store and I have to worry about a knife wielding assailant (most likely type of bad guy encounter actually).
I need a quick draw that I can quickly put rounds down range without:
    1: worrying about snagging
2: worrying about getting pushed out of battery
3: worrying about the first round sucking the bad guy's clothing in to the barrel and not being able to get off a second round
4: worrying about a fail to fire, fail to feed, fail to eject issue.
5: in some cases worrying about a safety
so in conclusion yes, the snub nose revolvers are still the kings of concealed carry. Idc what anyone says about capacity. If you cant make those first 2 shots count and then encounter a malfunction you're already dead. Need more rounds? yeah, I always carry 2-3 revolvers on me and practice NY reloads often. You worry about a longer distance shot? Get a S&W 638, load it up with semi wadcutters so you get good penetration at distances beyond 7 yards, have a cockable hammer that doesnt snag, maybe add a laser for good measure if you think the irons arent enough, bam you fixed your problems. JUST PRACTICE! The S&W 640 pro is my main carry, the 638 is my backup. If I open carry my 3" 686 plus the other 2 are riding concealed. I feel more than prepared for 99.999% of encounters. Even in mountain lion country. Aint no mountain lion withstanding a hardcast .38 +P, let alone .357

The critical defense in 125gr is a fine choice for a 357 mag out of those snubs. Now those I've shot out of the LCR AND SP101 2" barrel were accurate and made some noise on the gong. When using the 3" barrel SP101 , they really smacked the gong hard. Now, one load that im checking out is the Barnes TAC-XP 125GR SCHP. As to the 640 pro, that is a fine revolver. Around my area, they are a little hard to come by, but I keep my eyes open. Wouldn't hesitate to pick one up. The K6 Kimber is another revolver that is on the list.

Being all steel I find it a little heavy for pocket carry, but that’s just me. I put a pair of VZ grips on it which allows me to get a solid purchase for shooting both +P and MAG rounds. It’s accurate as hell too. Bought a Hellcat a while back, but I still find myself carrying this more just because it’s so un-noticeable on the hip.

Glad to see a newer revolver video from you. I always like your J-Frame and other S&W revolver videos. I had the 640 standard revolver but exchanged it for a 340 PD which REALLY has powerful recoil - I only fired ONE .357 round. I found that the 640 could be used to fire .357 without breaking my hand, but it still did hurt. I found the new classic model 36 w/+P is an awesome replacement - back to old school. The 637 and 442 are fine too with +P rounds (the 340 PD was tough even with +P .38 spl). I saw you "goodbye LCR, hello 637 etc. Thanks again for your videos.

Currently gaining in popularity, small frame snub revolvers have always been a great tool. While some still poo-poo revolvers and advocate only for high capacity pistols, to dismiss the benefits of a snub revolver is short-sighted.
I have a 640Pro; it’s a great handgun. I also have a 340 which in its own niche is really good. Pairing the two is a great defensive system.
I also advocate for the LCR and SP101, both also really good revolvers.

Thank you for this review!!! I have been contemplating purchasing one of these for a while. I currently have a Taurus 605, 357 mag which was my first revolver purchased a few years ago and I was on a budget (it's half the price versus the S&W) The Taurus 605 weighs roughly the same as the S&W 640 (I think the Taurus is actually 1 oz heavier) and I have carried the Taurus both IWB and inside of the pocket with a sticky holster with no problem due to the weight (You have to have a good gun belt). So I don't think I would have a problem carrying this gun inside of the pocket and the reason why I would prefer this over the Taurus is because one, it's a S&W, that's the Cadillac in my opinion for revolvers, and second my Taurus does have an exposed hammer and while practicing my draw with it, it does get hung up on the pocket every once and a while. Thank you again for the review!!!

Shoots great and I did try some 158 grain 357 loads and it was painful, but I am using 38+P and looking for some lighter recoil 357 loads, very happy with my purchase. It came with the original box and the previous owner had a trigger job action done on it and it feels great.

Way too much emphasis on sights and accuracy at distance in the review. Everyone is hung up on shooting groups with defensive close quarters weapons system. The sights are an upgrade but honestly not needed. I'll take them. But the feature I find best are the fact it is stainless, a little heavier, chambered in 357 and is cut for moon clips which I am faster at reloading than a semi auto. Those grips are terrible and should be replaced with the Pachmayr gripper grips.I wouldn't waste ammo or practice time shooting past 5 yards. Hits on the torso and head are what you are looking at. Practical accuracy not groups.
