    One of the gazillion things I love about Voiceplay, is that whatever ego each member and guest may have, they put it aside for the sake of the music. No lead singer unless the piece requires one. Voiceplay deliberately chooses to showcase everyone.

    • @OlArmySarge
      @OlArmySarge  25 дней назад +3

      Yeah, that lack of ego allows groups to stay together much longer than normal, but it is hard find those types of people who also have the talent you need for their parts.

    Left to right...
    Geoff Castellucci - bass, arrangements.
    J None - guest, former member, baritone.
    Eli (like jelly) Jacobson - tenor, rock tenor, lighting, arrangements.
    Cesar De La Rosa - baritone, tenor.
    Layne Stein - beatboxer, baritone, arrangements.
    Voiceplay has no lead singer. They all have parts to sing.
    Even Layne sings small parts sometimes. "Warriors" video earned him the nickname of VioLayne. He plays it again briefly in "The Lion Sleeps Tonight".
    J None was a member 2918-2021 when he joined the US Navy choir. He was stationed in Washington State but was promoted and restationed in Washington DC last year. Ever since he left he comes back when he can to sing with them. And all of their fans look forward to seeing him with them. We all consider him on hiatus rather than a former member. The last video he was in with them was "Hellfire" in October.

    In every art form there are artists, and there are craftspeople. In every art form, the masses prefer to see and hear what they've seen and heard before, so they favor craftspeople. Artists are constantly changing and creating. They challenge the form they work in. If what they want is the musical equivalent of a big Mac and fries, VoicePlay isn't their band. For those who have ears that enjoy being surprised, VoicePlay will do that for them. It's why they stay independent. They get to follow their art. Managers and labels don't like that, it disrupts the fandom. I didn't realize that VP has active detractors out there - but it doesn't surprise me. As for Layne's beatboxing? I've heard drummers say that they were fooled by the accuracy of his drums. But Layne doesn't stop there, he pulls out all kinds of funky sounds that we've never heard before. Not conventional. (his nickname, btw, is VioLayne). You ID'd J None (standing next to Geoff) as definitely a baritone. He's currently singing bass in the navy, but his original "role" with VP was baritone. (But sometimes he's hit tenor notes for them).
    I like artists who surprise me. Artists like Dirty Loops (they finally signed w/ a manager, but it's Quincy Jones and he doesn't get in their way), Dimash, Snarky Puppy, Chinchilla.

    • @OlArmySarge
      @OlArmySarge  25 дней назад +3

      Yea I have played a good deal of Dimash on my channel and will continue to do so. As for the lies about Layne's beatboxing, I just do not get the childishness of people who actively tried to keep me away from VP? Why? I am grown, I can make my own decisions.

    They're very different in style from the ones you've already done, but my favorite Layne moments are in Drunken Sailor and We Don't Talk About Bruno. There are tons more, but I can see you've already received other recommendations in the comments and don't want to overload you with too much. 😅

    Voiceplay doesn't really have a lead singer. They choose who fits the part best and then don't stay in their lanes.
    Eli the guy in the center has taken bass while Geoff sings Tenor.
    Cesar and J None both are classified as Baritones but can reach the rafters. J None is actually currently singing bass in the Navy (the name of the group just escaped me, someone help)
    Layne aka VioLyne also has a very sweet voice when he sings.
    Both Geoff and Tim are actually friends and a long running joke is that as Geoff's hair got longer Tim's got shorter. Check out Just Sing (with cc on, a must) for a fun little interaction.

    Looking at the group from your left - Geoff Castellucci -original member, bass + A0 growl, B0 subharmonic, F1 full chest, B4 sometimes mix, Bb5 falsetto (5 octaves +), J None - ex-member of VoicePlay baritone, recruited by the US Navy for his vocal skills - been promoted to bass, can easily do tenor, comes back when he can, Eli (like jelly) Jacobsen from upper bass, baritone, tenor, high tenor (rock god), Cesar de la Rosa (came on when VoicePlay lost both Earl Elkins (High tenor - original member left after 25 yrs for personal reasons) and J None) - baritone to high tenor recently hit C6 and D6 in The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Layne Stein - original member, started as baritone, when Scott Porter who was original beatboxer left for acting career Layne had Geoff get him started and Layne ran with it - best beatboxer around. All members of VP have worked there in Orlando with Disney or Universal and know a lot of great vocalists and since they are still a man or woman short, they can call on them as needed. I discovered Geoff doing the Monster Mash 2.5 yrs ago and from there found VoicePlay. I love everything about them, during covid they did a piece called Just Sing where proceeds went to musicians that were having a hard time during covid (if you react to it make sure captions are on, you'll learn a lot on the extras as well as the group). They spent a day up at Camp A Capella with kids singing with the kids there (Don't Stop Believin' - Journey), props and costumes are a part of most of their videos and often are auctioned so that kids will have a Christmas. Really good people.

    I enjoyed your reaction- thanks! I am glad that you are enjoying and appreciating the talent of Voice Play and disregarding the hate that you got from a viewer. I am glad I subscribed to your channel because you appreciate the diverse talent and different styles and genres of music covered by these groups. Sad that someone would hate like that as it is not a competition and both groups, Home Free and Voice Play are close friends very supportive of each other helping with arrangements at times and doing collabs together at times. You even noticed that the bass singers Geoff and Tim Foust even wear their hair the same way (they joke that it is the secret to singing the low bass notes). In interviews, if Geoff or Tim are asked who the better bass singer is they will say the other one- you can see and feel the love and respect there. You may enjoy the cover of "Survivor: Hillbillies Vs Zombies" that Home Free and Voice Play did together when they were on tour and really enjoyed each other.

    You want to really have some fun, wait till you get into their holiday offerings. Not only does VoicePlay own Halloween, but there are two specific Christmas songs they've done (White Christmas and Christmas Don't Be Late) that feature Layne's "slay bells" (sleigh bells).
    One significant note about Layne as a beatboxer: he specializes in electronic drum sounds.

    It's weird to me that there are people who love to hate on VoicePlay; that often seems focused on Geoff Castellucci and his crazy range being showcased. Geoff is probably the best known of the VoicePlay members -- he is fairly well known outside of the acapella world as one of the best contemporary bass singers currently. While his range is ridiculous and his tone is stunning, his vocal agility really sets him apart. Anyway, I'm enjoying your VP content and subscribed.

    I’m halfway through and heard the. comment someone made about the beatboxer (Layne). Wow, that’s crazy and I’m glad you took the time to come to your own conclusions. Layne is an extremely talented guy. He can sing, play violin, beatbox and he completely arranges about half of their covers, along with the artistic direction. Seriously one of the most creative and musically talented people I’ve ever seen. Geoff (the bass) arranges about the other half of their covers and has his own channel as others have mentioned. Also extremely talented. ❤

  • @DTA-Music
    @DTA-Music 25 дней назад +2

    No, they most definitely are not substandard! They do have their detractors, but I suppose that's true of most groups, even the really great ones. (Some folks in the a capella circuit are of the opinion that a bass should 'stay in his lane' and they get cranky when Geoff takes the lead or unexpectedly drops it into the basement. But his fans live for it.)
    It's hard to pin any of these these guys down to a specific role--they all have ridiculous ranges and swap the lead and other parts around in whatever manner they see fit. That said, the gentleman seated on the far left (Geoff) _almost_ always sings bass, but can get way up into the tenor range when he wants to; the one on the far right (Layne) _almost_ always beatboxes, but he also sings a nice baritone, as does Cesar, seated next to him. But the latter can sing a very high tenor, too. Eli (center) sings mainly tenor and has a background in metal, hence that lovely rock rasp you heard here.
    J. None (second from the left) is a former member and frequent guest, as well as the rapper you'll recall from Valhalla Calling. I've heard he sings bass with the Navy choir, but I've personally heard him take it all the way through the baritone and tenor ranges.

      Don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but VoicePlay and Home Free competed on the 'reality show' the Sing Off (Home Free won) and are quite friendly with each other, and they did a video of " Survivor, Hillbillies vs Zombies" that is a lot of fun. When Geoff first started growing out his hair (can't wait until you come across an older video with a babyfaced Geoff with super short hair), the resemblance between Tim and Geoff's long hair with a distinctive grey streak was undeniable. Geoff's hair has rapidly become more gray throughout but damn if it just hasn't enhanced his attractiveness.

    To be fair, yes they all have a good range. Geoff has the strongest bass but Layne, the beatboxer and even Eli, the tenor, can get down there when needed. J.None, the black guest singer here, sings bass for the navy Sea Chanters, but they can all reach tenor as well. Cesar, from Puerto Rico, is a baritone but has reached some very high and even whistle notes on occasion. Home Free's Adam is a brilliant vocal percussionist and VoicePlay's Layne has a different style of vocal percussion but is right up there with him for talent. Tim from Home Free and Geoff from VoicePlay are great friends, both basses, and there is no friction but I have on occasion seen some Home Free fans be rather dismissive of VoicePlay. It's sad though as there is room for both groups with their different styles, and there shouldn't be any unpleasantness.
