Hi there, thanks for watching! Today’s video we will be doing another VS Video and compare the 2 Premium Formats for Hellboy. We will be talking about both the Monster Sized Hellboy and the Hellboy Library Editions and what positives and negatives come with both. Beautiful big boy for one of my absolute favorites. Having said that, I decided to stick to my Libraries and paperbacks. thanks for the overview. Helped firm up my decision.

Sometimes the formats and the design of a book just makes the reading experience so much better and it’s weird but true!
Monster sized all the way, i nabbed one basically mint for 65 bucks. I love having an entire story or series in one volume, a solid pillow makes for an easy reading experience
Monster size is great because it has so much but missing those 1 shots was a deal breaker for me personally.
Totally agree about the pillow! Some get upset about heavy books but I’m someone that loves them Thic!
Have first 6 Library Edition that cost me nearly 200$ new shipping include and love it.
Wouldn't switch for MS, can't handle a 1000 plus pages book.

Library is where it’s at for me better portability. Especially after reading all three Invincible compendiums although I like collecting things all at once lol
Yeah I gotta agree especially with the portability point. Monster sized is a insanely massive book so if reading on the move is a thing for you then don’t get that haha

Definitely! I’d read most of the Hellboy run originally in trades and it was certainly more enjoyable in the larger format. I found myself looking at the artwork a lot more than I used too. Great vid by the way mate

I went with the library editions and have to agree that the covers attract dust so easily, apart from that they are excellent. My concern with the monster size would be page sag and the cover on the spine looks a bit weak, but saying that will look awesome in anyone's collections.
Yeah they are magnets to dust and it’s a bummer! I have dogs and they don’t even enter where my books are and somehow dog fur is still on my library edition.
And yeah the cover looks weak but MAN that book is seriously dense! I think it could deflect a bullet (kidding obviously haha)

Great comparison. Thank you for this. Makes me pretty certain that I will only keep my Library editions and wont double dip (even though it is one of my absolute favourite comic runs). The gutter loss difference is a pretty big deal for me - its really well made in the library ones

Great video. I ended up going the library edition route. Tough call for me but thought the massive volume wouldn't be an enjoyable experience. Also it sounds like some extra content in the library Ed and better build.
More expensive but will be a good read. And I can buy the volumes as they go to n sale (bought 4 and 5 last night as black Friday deal)

I agree with the points you made. I’m a sucker for a all in 1 and it would of looked good next to big damn sin city but I just couldn’t do it because of the content even tho the chronological reading order sounds really nice.

I have both Library Editions and the MS now. Library Editions are the way to go to read. Whereas MS, I don't know why I bought it but all I know is that the brick is gorgeous and huge. 😂 Love Hell Boy. Such a great stories. 🎉

I went with the Library editions for my collection but I get the appeal of both. I also view them the same way you do, library editions for reading and monster sized for a collectors piece that you can still read.

I bought the monster sized. Sold all my trades apart from the 2 covering the short stories.
It's still sat on my shelf in its cellophane.
Bottom shelf though as that big boy would sag the above shelves 😂👍
That’s not a bad way to collect! Ends up taking up less space on the shelves in the long run.
And oh yes that monster needs to be on the bottomest shelf for sure!

Finding Volume 2 for Library Edition is harder to find than finding the Arc Of The Covenant
It is very hard currently but the library editions are evergreen so just give it time and they will come back my friend!

That’s I’m no super sure about since I don’t read digital unless I HAVE to. I would assume it would have all of Hellboy or Atleast enough to get started!

Personally it’s the library editions 100%. They are so much easier to read, the sketches are super cool to gain some behind the scenes stuff, the one shots are fun.

No Monster Sized does not have pancakes, honestly it’s missing a lot if not all of the short stories and one shots!
The Monster-Sized Hellboy is not out-of-print, it is out of stock. Cheap Graphic Novels is expecting a restock in January and are taking pre-orders for it.
I was told OOP from JP at OrganicPricedBooks who is pretty on top of that stuff for obvious reasons, but if they announced a Restock then that’s even better for those that want it.

Hey brother, question,: the issiues in "the complete shorts stories tpbs vol 1 y 2" is in all the library edition? or only in this tpb format?
I believe all those little short stories and one shots are on the Library Editions but I do admit I am not the leading expert on Hellboy!
But I have been told before that the Library Editions collect it all and monster sized does not.
I’ve never _personally_ found all-in-ones that appealing - I find them unwieldily and don’t end up reading them often. Even the Library Editions are a bit much, but Mignola’s art really benefits from the larger pages. That said, they’re second on the list for being rescued from a flooding house (first in the queue being my Usagi Yojimbo books).
No wrong way to collect my friend. What ever way you like to read best is the right way for you!

For Hellboy technically no.
You could get some TPBs or Omnibuses for the other BPRD material or in universe stories but that’s if you want everything related to the Hellboy world.

@@ManiacArtist83 if reading is your objective then I recommend going the boxset route 100%.
Monster sized is more a novelty/collectors piece and isn’t the EASIEST thing to read due to its size.

What’s the best way to collect BRPD?
The BEST way in my opinion are the Hardcovers Dark Horse put out.
The EASIEST way because the Hardcovers are a little harder to find and track down are the paperback omnibuses also put out by Dark Horse that have been getting printed lately.

The monster sized really did impress me with its binding, I was expecting it to be a rough one to open up but it’s not.
Is this similar to Omnibus Box set?
Not exactly!
It’s a large all in one edition and not like the box set that has individual books.
It contains all of the material minus the short stories and side stories.

@@DeathCherudim unless you just want a better collected edition for collectors sake then I would say no. If you want the material to just read and that’s it then you went a good route.

Nmc mentioned that paper quality is better on library edition and there are bleed through in monster sized edition
Yeah I’d say that also.
The library editions have such thick pages that there’s zero bleed through.
I would say though since most pages and panels in Hellboy are full of so much black that bleed through shouldn’t be a huge issue with both editions since bleed through 9 times out of 10 only really happens on all white pages.
Even then Monster Sized still didn’t have the worst bleed through I’ve seen.
