It's different but I like it. And as they say, it grows on you. I dont think the majority liked their album off the first listen. But as you give it a few listens then.. well... Tool.

When the single came out, I had to hear it about 5 times before it started to soak in, I wanted to like it more than I did, so it was a little disappointed but the rest of the songs turn this album into a masterpiece, such art in sound.

You are completely right. At first it felt less but with 3 years of listens it’s actually become my favourite as I’ve grown older. 18 year old me would of preferred Lateralus but 36 year old me is Fear Inoculum

I liked your thoughts on the album, pretty insightful. As a giant fan from the beginning I can honestly say that I loved this album from the first listen. There was 13 yrs of anticipation and as you touched on a sense of maybe this is the last Tool album. I liked how you put it "playing for themselves or just laying it all out there". ✌️

Can't get enough of that trivia you say? Okay here's a bit:
rhythmically speaking, that signature tool sound that consists of parallel phrases of different lengths that overlap each other and come out in the long run... patterns that phase through each other, Like poly-rhythms but on a longer scale, are derived straight from 1980s King Crimson. Crimson pieces like "frame by frame" or "elephant talk" would be perfect examples. The only place, in nature, that I've seen these techniques used would be in the music of the Balinese Gamalon Orchestra. I think this is where Fripp, of King Crimson, got it originally. Though I could have imagined that last part... though I don't know where else he would'a got it... The first part, however, I say with utter confidence though; because Maynard explained just this at a concert I was at- giving all props to the elder band, who had just in fact opened for them...
As the most guilty sort of party when it comes to music, I can affirm that upon familiarity with both groups and the music bits in question it is in fact obvious what Maynard said is. We know what we are talking about.
    peace and love.

So I go back to the beginning with Tool, I saw Tool's 38th show ever in 1992 in Seattle when they opened for Henry Rollins. We were living in Seattle in the height of the grunge scene and Tool came to town and changed the world.. For me anyways. I bought the EP from Adam and still have it along with the ticket stub. No band ever inspired me like Tool and I saw it all back in the day.
I've seen Tool over 20 times over 30 years and as a drummer that can cover a few of the easier Tool songs I love Fear and when I first heard the Fear album I cried my eyes out like some weirdo lol. The wait was painful. Fear is by far my fave! It grows every day and a simp musician like me I will never figure it out it's so difficult. That's why I love it and always will. But I do believe there is more Tool to come very soon! Peace!

Hearing invincible, and it's breakdown for the first time I did. I listened to the entire album at work in headphones obviously, went home told everyone to give me 16 minutes alone for 7empest that opening rift made me restart the song 10 times before I gotta full listen without back playing. I cried on the invincible breakdown like holy fuck this is my favorite band just chugging. Then I hear the rift to this and I'm like in the mix of wanting to scream and cry cause it was so fucking beautiful. Who can literally turn 16 minutes of a song this satisfying from first note to the trail off.

nice eulogy to your journey and respectful tribute to the band, man. i personally think it's a great set of songs. comparing one album to another seems trite to me now, given how our technology has advanced to seem to promote the individual track or the self-created playlist. no 'album' will ever have as much musical impact on me as Aenima, and much of that is down to where my life was at the time i discovered Tool, but the six 'songs' on Fear Inoculum are six of the best sounding pieces of music i have ever heard, a much welcome addition to an already near-perfect canon of work.

First time listens are tricky with TOOL, but I really enjoy the evolution of TOOL. Fear Inoculum comes from a seasoned band that doesn't want to stick to any rules anymore and just celebrate their craft. I can only hope they have one more album in them, now that they got FI out of their system.

It took me a month to admit it cuz the build was, to put it lightly, immense. For me, Fear Innoculum is step down from 10000 days, which is a step down from Lateralus, albeit a very small step. When the top of your ladder is wherr tools is a step down is still 1000 steps above the average anyway. Its still an excellent lp, and hard to match Lateralus, if even attainable ! They kinda made that bed for themselves tho, how do you live up to 13 yrs of hype and build up from a ravenous and arrogant fan base such as tools? Worse problems to have than god- like expectations

Yo! I'm having a similar journey with this record. Seems to me they took away some of the classic heavy Tool drops. Breaking some expectations. Now I'm listening to a new record. That caught me off guard, now in a good way. 7empst doesnt sound like Jambi. Invincible doesn't sound like Patient. Everything is new. And when Danny gives us that bounce with the clean crash on the downbeat. Hoo-whee! Justin setting the tone. Adam scorching the atmosphere with poly-16th notes or whatever, damn. It just gets better with age. I wonder if they released it too early! 😆

If you're looking for something to plug the Tool shaped hole then check out The Mars Volta. Not even necessarily for a reaction (tho thatd be cool haha) but even just in your own time. At times they honestly make Tool look standard! Cygnus... Vismund Cygnus would be a great track to listen to, I reckon you'd dig them. The guitar and drum work is just insane

this album disappointed many. the musicians.. are .... incredible. but this album.. it's jammed. its a jam album. they jam out. but really.,.no songs. yeah. they're awesome. but this is the antithesis of lateralus. its the opposite of unforgettable songs. its ... shit. compared to what they were capable. this album should of never happened
