  • How will a 65W system react when given a lower wattage "T" type processor?

    I always go by the numbers when tightening heatsinks down but I also only tighten one or two turns and move to the next screw and repeat until all the screws are tight to avoid putting too much pressure in any one area on the top of the CPU or bottom of the heatsink. I also loosen the same way.

      old fashioned perhaps but "tighten evenly" is my approach too.

    • @handmedowntech
      @handmedowntech  6 месяцев назад

      Good advice - I also find I sometimes have to tighten each one a slight bit so they fall into the holes in the MB

    • @TitoLukason
      @TitoLukason 6 месяцев назад +2

      exactly! Proceed almost as with head gasket torquening...
      One of the benefits of that is you need very little thermal compound on the CPU and it spreads evenly without sipping out.

    I'll bet the power supply requirement is something in the BIOS that is hard coded regardless of the CPU installed. Those tiny fans pull very small current like 0.12A to 0.5A at 12V would be 1.44-5 Watts. There should be a rating on the fan assembly telling volts and amps eg. 12V @ 0.12A just multiply the two that's watts. volts X amp = watts. My Elitedesk is running a software update right now or I would look. I just ordered a G3 to add to the fleet by the way. It's a 65W barebones for $35 with fan, caddy, sata cable. I ordered an i7-7700 and 16G ram to put in it. I've got SSD's laying around to put in it. I enjoy your videos. It's like stuff I do sometimes. These Tiny little machine's are fun to tinker with at home.

      I'm hearing from some commenters that they are able to run everything fine using the 65W vs 90W power supply. I would have experimented more but was concerned I wasn't booting up - word to the wise - don't use your primary machine for tinkering :)

  • @RedMAGACult

    It has been my experience that when you change out higher TDP CPUs with lower watt CPUs the system, although able to run the lower TDP CPU in a higher wattage system, takes some time to READJUST to the new environment. As you discovered, a 35 watt CPU will run in a 65 watt system. You shouldn't have to use the 90 watt PS because the CPU is not drawing above 35 watt. Therefore, you should be able to power a 65 watt system, that is using a 35 watt CPU, with a 65 watt PS that is adequate for a 35 watt system. However, you can also use the 90 watt PS because it can deliver the wattage required for the 35 watt CPU. On the other side of the coin, you cannot run a 35 watt system with a 65 watt CPU!

      It did sort of seem that way going the other way too (when I put everything back the way it was the booting took a couple rounds to come around )

    Great video 😊😊😊 .. I bought one lsst year that said it was a 6500T system , came with a full fat 6600 and a big old power brick. The little hard drive fan seems superfluous really as it doesn't do much for extra cooling . If you take it out the system still works , you just get a bios warning at startup. Still great little pcs for the money if you just want a media player/ browser.

Practically non-audible in desktop / CPU -intensive heavy tasks, currently under-volted GPU (about minus 20-30W power draw vs stock) make slight noise when gaming but cant hear it anyways while gaming.

      I'm assuming you have a G1? Everything I'm seeing only shows the G1 supporting the T series processors. I don't see mention of a 65W version of the G1. Which makes sense it was the first generation and HP learned more for the G2.

  • @MnemonicCarrier

    I have the 35W G2. I'm thinking about getting a 65W version with an i7 6700 as it has twice as many cores, just worried it's going to be noisy (my 35W G2 is silent most of the time). I run Linux on my little unit - love it.

    • @MnemonicCarrier
      @MnemonicCarrier 6 месяцев назад

      @@handmedowntechAh, okay - thanks for that. Might not be worth doing the "upgrade" then, as I really appreciate the peace and quiet (although the extra threads would be nice). These beautiful units make great Linux machines, but I could really do with some extra horsepower for my personal workloads (i.e. running Android Studio, Android Virtual Devices, compiling a ton of stuff etc...). I've been looking at prices, and I think I might be better off going for one of those "Mini Forums" type mini-PCs (with the Ryzen 7, 8 cores, 16 threads, Radeon RX 680m or 780m iGPU etc...) 🤔

      Le i5-6500 a besoin d’une alimentation de 90 W. Vous pouvez mettre le processeur dans le 35 W et utiliser l’alimentation 90 W. Il fera cependant chaud car il nécessite un dissipateur thermique en cuivre. Désolé pour la mauvaise traduction.
