If I could sing with John Prine I could die happy. ESPECIALLY this song! I know most of his top songs by heart. Although I love "Souvenirs", I can't sing that one in public because my throat closes up and I cry. That song is an arrow through my heart, as many of John's songs are. "Please Don't Bury Me" would be my first choice if I could sing with him. I think there should be a PSA on TV and radio using that song to promote organ donation!
Colbert made no jokes, didn't mess around, didn't try to steal the song as a 'funny guy'...a true show of respect for John as a national treasure. Best video I've ever seen. It says so much
When I saw this clip on the Late Show with SC, it was when John was in intensive care. Stephen announced the clip as being made in 2017 but never made it to air. He was honouring John, who was in the hospital, fighting for his life. As soon as I heard the song, I knew I had a connection with John. Up until this time, I had never heard of John Prine. After the clip was over, I replayed it and replayed it again and again. Then I went to RUclips to check out this guy, who I never heard of in my 76 years on this planet. What I found on RUclips made me feel like I was living under a rock, all my life. I mean, I played in a rock n roll band in the 60’s and stayed interested in the music scene, after I stopped and raised a family, so one would think, I would have come across the likes of John Prine. Alas, nope. After watching several RUclips videos of his performance, I could tell why I felt this connection, the moment I first saw/heard him play/sing. His style of play, his choice of composition for his songs are exactly what I love to play and (try to) sing to my audience of none. I am simply amazed I have wasted so much of my life, not listening to this wonderful talent. While he is gone, and I’ll never see him live, his legacy will live on in my feeble attempt to emulate his creative genius, as I will learn as many of his songs as possible.....and there are plenty to choose from....and play them for myself and audience of none! Thank you John Prine and may you entertain God, as you have done for so many, here on earth.
Speaking on his song "Illegal Smile," John Prine said it wasn't about drugs or drinking, it was about finding humor in life's sad, dark, and downright crazy moments, and that was the philosophy behind all his music. Anyone who shared Prine's cockeyed sense of humor knows that it's rare to hear it expressed in music, or anywhere in life, really. As a kid in a dead-end town, in a not-the-best family situation, John's music was always a comfort, reminding me that life was sad enough to make you laugh and funny enough to make you cry. He may have been the best friend I never met. Rest in peace, John Prine.
It’s hard not to be crushed by JP’s passing....but these two minutes bring me pure joy right now. Stephen looks like an 8-year-old boy who woke up Christmas morning to find a puppy under the tree. R.I.P. John.....
I have to admit that I had a little something in my eye at this rendition. Mr Colbert was so respectful and therefore additive to this performance. For John Prine I have no words, just awe.
How ironic and sad. This song, the timing of the original recording and it resurfacing now and John falling ill to this terrible sickness that is sweeping down upon the world brings me to tears. This song should go viral. So incredibly beautiful hearing them together.
We're probably doing this for the internet Unless something terrible happens and we have to cheer up the world! Boy Stephen if you only knew then what was happening now in 2020!
Someone gave me a John Prine album many years ago and it sat in a CD box for many months. I decided to listen to it and have been a respectful listener ever since. John Prine is a national treasure.
Been a devoted fan since my sophomore year in college, 1975. Have seen him live more times than I can count & was never disappointed... What a might story teller; turned my kids onto him, too & they've loved him almost as long as I have!
You can tell that Stephen spent some time listening to John Prine throughout his life. This wasn't one of those things that he just learned the song for the show, although I'm sure he brushed up on the lyrics. But you can tell from his comfort level with it that he's been a fan of the song for a long time.
WOW and WOW!!! First saw John Prine in 1978 at The Wax Museum in Washington DC and have been a fan since. Last saw him maybe a dozen years ago, could be less. At first show George Stark of the Washington Redskins was there. I remember that because he was so huge and it was such a small venue. I love John, and his songs, and the stories they tell. Stephen did a great job singing with him.
Times are hard right now and sometimes you find yourself stumbling around youtube looking for something beautiful to lift your spirits and what ends up happening is you wander into a place that lets loose the floodgates of emotions that you've been holding inside for far too long. I grew up hearing his songs, but never knew his name. I just knew the melodies and words he crafted into songs that made you feel. I can't stop feeling now. His music is magical... and now I feel broken. All the frustration and feelings of hopelessness and loss have come out of me. But, at least those feelings are on the outside now instead of eating me away.
Rest In Peace mom , I hope you can hear this all the way up there in heaven. I know you loved this song. Thanks Jon I was blessed to be brought up with your music.
Aw ferchrissakes, am I alone in saying I think I can listen to Stephen sing an entire album of covers? What a sweet little duet by a musical legend and one of his biggest admirers. This made my whole freakin' day...
"In case something terrible happens..." 😭 We definitely need something to cheer us up now. Hang in there, Mr. Prine. Please stay strong and keep fighting. 💜
When I start feeling sad about JP's current physical condition, I remember that his soul, if not his body, is still very much in tact. Long live John Prine.
Years back I spent a great evening in the Key West High auditorium listening to John sing about life. It is a memory that brings a smile every time I think about it. Miss ya John.

Two of my favourite performers in their own right. You can definitely tell the respect level Stephen has for John Prine though. He looks like a little kid up there, just grinning from ear to ear. I loved the little point to him when the song started, just showed the awe he had. I do believe that it has to do with the Chicago connection with Colbert spending much of his time there during college. Colbert really does have a lovely voice though, especially on the harmonies and harmonies are much harder to do than they would seem. I know a lot of great singers who just can't seem to really do harmonies as well as you'd think. I do know however that very early on in his college years Stephen was the lead singer in a cover band. So he's definitely been singing for a long time and is comfortable doing it in front of an audience (you do see a lot of it now on The Late Show now. He's just so damn talented, just seems like a really nice guy, I find him rather attractive and he's funny and smart. His wife definitely got a good one but hearing him speak of his wife he loves her more than anything in the world. John Prine is just as he always is. Grew up with him and have seen him live a number of times. Not quite the same since the throat cancer but a great songwriter is a great songwriter and frankly most of the best aren't the best vocalists in the world. That something so TERRIBLE...not only for the world but for John himself!!! 💔 THANK YOU JOHN PRINE for SO MANY BEAUTIFUL MEMORIES...PRAYING FOR QUICK HEALING!!! We still NEED YOU! And thank you Stephen for another beautiful memory!!! You sing purdy darn good!!! 😄 BLESSINGS TO ALL! Stay safe & healthy!!! ❤️
Just saw this on replay tonight 3/31/2020. One of the nicest duets I've heard in a long time. Genuine, heartfelt singing of a tune ripe for the day we're in. Prayers going out to John Prine. Please God, don't take him this way. Thank you Stephen, for all you do.
I have always loved everything John Prine wrote, and this is one of my favorites. But I was shocked that Stephen Colbert did so well with this song. I have never watched his show, but I will now.
Gobsmacked to see that Mr Colbert has been singing with various musical legends -- not only that, but singing with a sweetness and an evident joy and with such appreciation for his musical guest. I love the moment captured here -- all the more in these dark times (that's the way that the world goes round...)
Not going to lie, I still miss John Prine, and it still hurts to know he's gone. But at least these videos help ease the sadness and bring a smile. What a story teller John was.
Mr. Prine legit liked how well Mr. Colbert knew his song and sang it like life depended on it. Absolutely beautiful moment to see! Rest in peace and harmony with God and the Universe Mr. Johnny Prine.
I saw Steve Goodman and Bonnie Raitt in Iowa City in the late 70’s. Have you ever heard Steve’s song The Dying Cubs Fan Last Request? My mom was a die hard Cubs fan for over 50 years! If there is a heaven or afterlife of some sort, l sure as hell hope she saw them finally win the World Series!!!😊
It's obvious Stephen Colbert knows he is in the presence of an icon, John Prine is humble and Mr Colbert showed his humility in singing with my hero. Thankyou, Thankyou , Thankyou, John Prine
to the man who meant so much to so many. Thank you John you will be so missed. My heart is broken. You've been part of my life for 40 years. love ur stories , like the happy enchilada (half an inch of water) song. You were my favorite hands down. Rest easy til we meet again.
It's 2020, Grammy night. Next time you have him on treat us with "Some Humans Ain't Human" and "That's How Every Empire Falls". He was presented with the "Lifetime Acheivement Award" by Bonnie Raitt tonight.
Stephen introduced me to John Prine and Pete Seeger back on the Colbert Report. Both are icons, not just in folk music but in American history, and they've revolutionized my view of the world and my fellow humans. Thanks Stephen!
This was SO special! Don't know how I missed it before now but knowing how much John Prine meant to Evvie & Stephen- what a moment for them & what a fabulous duet! I've always loved this song!
I have a folkie friend who sings this song and relates a story how a fan once asked him to sing the "Happy Enchilada" song. It took few minutes, but he finally determined she had misheard "half an inch of water" as" happy enchilada." This has been the "Happy Enchilada" song for me ever since.
Interesting, your folkie friend is merely performing the live rendition John does, in which he tells that story within the body of the song. This happened to John Prine, rather than your friend. But a great story nonetheless.
I'm sorry Stephen to hear your friend and singing buddy Mr John Prine passed away from COVID April 2020. I really enjoy listening to this song 'That's the Way That the World Goes 'Round'. Celebrating a life who brought much light to us through his lyrical story telling songs. And you as well Mr Colbert. Thanks for bringing great fun and entertaining to this crazy world via the Late Show.
"Unless something terrible happens..." Rest in Peace Mr. Prine.
right off the bat Stephen hit the nail on the head, and I'm crying before it even starts
I cry everytime I watch this.
Damn. It was all Stephan’s fault!?!
Stephen knows exactly how lucky he is to be singing with John Prine, and that makes this video all that much more special.
Marshall Farley right!!?? What an honor!!!!
Prine is absolutely the best his music is timeless
Agreed!

His admiration for the naked as the eyes of a clown lie is great. Can see it in hus face as he sings it, like what a great line
This will always be the "Happy Enchilada" song to me. We miss you so bad JP!

This guy, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, and Van Morrison were my childhood.
There is a tribute concert for Emmylou on the TV channel, Quello. You would love it! about $7/month to join and worth every penny.
You have impeccable taste in music! I hope you have children who are listening to these greats also. Music like this helps to heal a sick world.
I agree with you 100%!!!
I didn't know him , but I miss this guy , I loved his music .
God Bless. Sweet souls both of you.
His words are always in the back of your mind, and when you really need them they come to the fore.
Glad this popped up. Stephen sings well. John Prine RIP.
Prine on late night... can't get much better than that. Thanks Stephen!
This was amazing. I love you John Prine. Stephen your melody was impressive.
It's obvious Stephen Colbert knows he is in the presence of an icon, John Prine is humble and Mr Colbert showed his humility in singing with my hero. Thankyou, Thankyou , Thankyou, John Prine
In honor of John Prine he put up a good fight we will forever remember him. ❤️❤️Rest in peace❤️❤️
Something terrible did happen today. RIP John Prine.
😪
5/2/2020 and still hurting over the loss of John Prine. His music still makes me smile.
Two of the best people ever. RIP John and thank you for all of the wonderful music.
to the man who meant so much to so many. Thank you John you will be so missed. My heart is broken. You've been part of my life for 40 years. love ur stories , like the happy enchilada (half an inch of water) song. You were my favorite hands down. Rest easy til we meet again.
Prine is always a treat to watch perform, but Colbert was equally wonderful - really carried it off. Thanks guys.
My heart is warmed. Thank you guys..........
This hits different now
It's 2020, Grammy night.
We all love to sing this song... Thanks John, so grateful to have sung along a few times in my life at the Edmonton Folk Festival.
This was SO special! Don't know how I missed it before now but knowing how much John Prine meant to Evvie & Stephen- what a moment for them & what a fabulous duet! I've always loved this song!
Two minutes and forty seconds of heaven, much appreciated by all who hear it
Thank you John
I have a folkie friend who sings this song and relates a story how a fan once asked him to sing the "Happy Enchilada" song.
It took few minutes, but he finally determined she had misheard "half an inch of water" as" happy enchilada."
This has been the "Happy Enchilada" song for me ever since.
Interesting, your folkie friend is merely performing the live rendition John does, in which he tells that story within the body of the song. This happened to John Prine, rather than your friend. But a great story nonetheless.
I was hoping John Prine would sing the "Talking Taco" song.
Great, beloved songwriter. John will be missed.
Something terrible is happening....you may need to cheer up the world with this gem.
Makes me cry just thinking of all the wonderful memories Stephen has, but that's the way the world goes round.
Beautiful, Stephen! Bet this leaves some great memories
in terms of singer/songwriter I think you gotta put John Prine right next to Bob Dylan I encourage ppl to search him on YT amazing stuff!
John has always been a favorite!
I started listening to him back in ‘78
miles above Dylan
Every year that goes by and I hear this song i shed more tears than the last. Simple, beautiful, factual. All things we need in life.
I've seen Stephen Colbert sing with a lot of performers but his is the absolute best. It really shows how much he loves the music of John Prine.
I can't LOVE this enough! Praying for John to have the strength to heal from this virus. We need all of our storytellers and artists.
love you John, gods speed, love you too Stephen, stay well all.
Prine's music brings the best out in everyone.
God bless, John Prine!
Grateful to be able to hear this on the evening that it was announced that John Prone died of COVID-19
The Great John Prine and the Great Colbert!
Loved it.
so much funnier, down to earth, and talented than every other late night host. deserves more credit.
I thought I'd cried all my tears for John, but this lovely video made me cry again. ❤
