Very few artists can lay claim to being the voice and atmosphere of a generation...a particular time and place..for those who grew up and listened to this amazing music particularly in NYC..Paul Simon can lay claim...he is songwriting genius..one of a kind.
If you mention singer/songwriters of the past 50 years Paul Simon will be at the top of the list. Yes, there's others, but Simon is exceptional in his writing, singing, and guitar accompaniment.
I've struggled on guitar for years but recently really focused on working hard to improve and at last I can play and sing Me n Julio and it sounds good and its one of the most rewarding things I've ever accomplished.
Congrats, I love Simon and his collection was the first guitar music I ever bought but it is really challenging, he makes it look so easy and smooth but I can never get the cadence of playing and singing his songs at the same time, I dont know what is different about his music or why.
As a lifelong guitarist I can fully understand your joy in finally nailing a difficult song. I also have struggled learning many songs over the years and occasionally I would get one right. The Paul Simon tune I have spent the most time trying to learn is "The Boxer". Best of luck to you and God bless.

When I was a little boy in the early 70’s my parents divorced.... I’d spend the weekends with my dad... he was a very successful roofer spawning his business off my grandpa’s business... during my visits we would listen to “records” albums lol... he had everything from Elvis, zeppelin, who, grand funk.... Paul Simon and the likes... his “cool” workers would stop by and visit... my dad was such a fun dude even the guys working for him liked to hang out with him... One of my favorites was Paul Simon... one Sunday we were getting ready for the drive from east side of Cincinnati to BFE Indiana he said why don’t you take that Paul Simon album home. You don’t even know how happy I was. It was like taking him home with me. I had a little record player I had to plug in at the top of the steps by my bedroom in the old farm house I live in with my mom and stepping father.......... yep I meant that.. stepping father.. I remember one winter during the blizzard of 77 I was snowed in and couldn’t go see my dad.... I burnt this album up..... he died 11-24-17 68 lung cancer.... I love these songs
That was a really touching moment you describe ed about taking your father's record home ...you must have lived him very very much ...God bless you thank you for a very lovely story !!!
Well blow me ,I’ve been a Simon and Garfunkel fan since 60s but this Me and Julio rendition is truly AWESOME, and just proves what a unique genius Paul was ,is and forever will be. Thanks ,thanks thanks to both of you Paul and Art.
I used to check this record out of the library over and over again, and sit in my room every day after school listening to it. That’s about the same time my best friend started calling me Julio. LOL
Paul Simon and Paul McCartney stand apart as the two most talented and prolific singer/songwriters of the past 5 decades. Both with creative and diverse songs and musical styles.
Mr Colbert and all, it is You, Me, and Julio Down by the Schoolyard. Amazing show of entertainment here! Paul Simon is one of the very best in the business!
You have officially "Arrived" when you whistle with Paul Simon to "Me and Julio down by the schoolyard". This was the high moment of your life Stephen. You should have retired after that moment.
This performance made me want to learn this song on guitar and play it at open mics. Somebody commented they'd never heard that song played at an open mic before. Thank you, that's exactly what I was going for.
Hey Paul you are a musical legend, this gem of a performance is an important rendition of a classic - truly emotional. So that crap from that "bell-end", well he counts for zero but you Paul, this track, and so many more, well thanx Paul...
I once spoke to Jim LaBarbara, who is a well known radio host in Cincinnati who spent 40 years on the air waves interviewing and inttroducing acts like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, etc. I asked him what oldies musician was the most surprising interview he ever had. He said Paul Simon, but not for the reason you'd think. He said Paul Simon WAS a bit of a jerk. He took it in stride and figured the man was just having a bad day, but his attitude didn't change in other meetings over the years. That always stuck with me, and it is surprising for a guy that seems to soft spoken.
Paul Simon has been performing this song for most of his professional career. This is one time when Stephen Colbert joined him on the stage for some fun. So those of you who are complaining about it, have your little tantrums, and get over it!
Lately I just can't get enough of the 80's music and we wouldn't of had the 80's without Paul! I'm so glad I listened and grew up in the 70's to appreciate the wonder bands and music that was played.
Simon has a long history of cooperating with skits that make fun of him, and of various aspects, rumors, legends etc about him. A classic example was a SNL sketch in a turkey outfit. It certainly wasn't a glamorous rock-star turn. He made people laugh because he complained in-character, then conceded to play a goofy role, then explained why it didn't work. Whatever he's like personally, he's willing to do stuff where hosts and writers make fun of him. Oh, and a 1:1 pickup game with an NBA star, also on SNL, where he acknowledges the height disadvantage, but speaks as if he's got some moves that give him a chance.
There's an even more well-known and classic example than that. Check out the video "You Can Call Me Al" and watch Chevy Chase "sing" in place of Simon!
The basketball player was Connie "the Hawk" Hawkins, a precursor to Dr. J and the MJ of the early '70's. He's also famous for his quote: "The older i get, the better I used to be".

Without Paul Simon, the American songbook of the past century would have an enormous hole in it.
Paul is one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Period.
There should be a Paul Simon "Songsmith" award. He deserves the Nobel poet laureate award as much as Dylan.
He was my idol when I was a morose teenage poet. Now at 69 I only love him more.
Are you still morose?
