  • The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake occurred off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia.
The quake triggered a series of devastating tsunamis along the coast of most of the landmasses bordering the Indian Ocean, inundating coastal communities with waves up to 30 meters.
This simulation shows the tsunami hitting Patong Beach, one of the worst affected areas of Phuket, Thailand.
The underlying model used to generate the scenario is the ANUGA hydrodynamic model which is a free and open source software tool, suitable for predicting the consequences of hydrological disasters such as riverine flooding, storm surges and tsunamis.
More information about the software is available: en.wikipedia.or...

The ocean going back out to sea, in the beginning of what happened, s what fooled people and children, into running into the ocean, where it was now shallow, as the water was sucked back out to sea. This simulation really should have made the beginning of the receding ocean a priority. An oceanic body of water that leaves the beach and is sucked back out to deep water is a huge sign of the beginning of a tsunami. Run to higher ground at the first warning of the ocean receding and being sucked back out to deep water. This will save your life.

@Hhh Szsz Have you any idea of the power of that Wave. Bear in mind, one cubic metre of water weighs a ton. I stayed in beach bungalows across the road from the beach, they were of bricks, obliterated. 😢

@@kennethwarburton177 what a kind and polite response you seem like a very nice chap! I have been fascinated and horrified ever since I first heard about the boxing day tsunami back when I was a school girl and it's really nuts the power water has like you said it is heavey, way more powerful than most people think when they think of water. Tops of giant concrete domes moved miles inland to rice paddy's, giant sea baring concrete barriers broken and tossed around. Water when in tsunami form moving at the speed of a airliner esp if the beach is low lying will ravage an area building material be dammed water is heavey and when moving at 500 miles an hour with all thay built up water behind it and then mix in the debris already picked up and you have a monster generating more power than an a bomb going off. Total destruction in some places and then due to the trajectory of the tsunami or the natural shape of a beach and there could be very little damage it all just depends. God bless! Hope you get to go back there on day if you wish. :)

@@trutherror I’d absolutely love to return to Phuket, what a beautiful place and it’s people. I’ve watched the documentary on that tragic event many times, it must have been horrific, Never underestimate the power of wind and water. Mother Nature is all powerful. We are at her mercy. Take care Crystal, and thank you for the reply. 🙂
