The CS2 Update was expected to change Counter-Strike forever. However, for the smaller "Community Servers", fake servers and exploitation of Steam's Server Browser have confused users and hindered the scene. In this video, we go over misuse of "redirects" by servers in Rust, TF2, CS:S, and of course CS2, and how some servers use this to advertise (and how this leads to less players overall)

The CSS and Go community browsers were ENTIRELY unusable as of a year ago. Seemed like it's been going on for a long time. Thanks for the tips about those external server browsers though, didn't even know that existed!
This is an issue in TF2 as well. Servers will fake ping numbers as low as 20 and when you actually join it's up to stuff like 120. Sucks
6:49 - Gametracker doesn’t have an official support for CS2 servers but they can be found in Counter Strike Global Offensive tab. Anyway thanks for making this video. CS2browser should be more known to community cause steam browser is currently unusable because of those fake servers. I recently started my own little test server and if it wasn’t an unique mode, it would probably be empty.
Valve isn't even publicly traded, they are a small company. This is beyond their capabilities

Never saw any of your content before but your presentation is great bro.
This explains why I had such a hard time trying to get into CS 1.6. Every single XX/32 server with de_dust 2 just pushes you into a random modded server with fake ping.
Tips:
Use gametracker and set the country to where you know you'll have decent ping - game tracker reduces redirects by 75%.
Write "ping" in the console to see your true ping, and whether or not players are actually bots.
Game tracker is broken site that isn’t maintained do not use it for anything anymore.

I've noticed there were fake servers like this on tons of source/valve games for nearly a decade by now. I've been waiting for some other person to notice this
I mean this has been going on for years? its nothing new hahahahaha, fuck even the main server i used on GO KZG had servers from all over the world to redirect to main server.

Valve was always awful at making games and hosting servers, especially Steam, now they have this idea that will not help fight scammers.
CS2 killed community servers by ruining the browser
its been a thing since CSGO, and has plagued TF2 as well as CS Source
they get smarter with server filtering so the servers would still display even if you filter out all the possible options in the server browser. It's infuriating.

This is just an issue that affects all source engine games and its sad that Valve didn't take steps to prevent this with CS2.
Garry's Mod if you didn't know made there own custom server browser UI not just to make it look better and make it easier to browse servers but to fix this exact problem.
In Garry's Mod if you try to spoof the server list in anyway and it is detected or reported to gmod developers that servers IP will get blacklisted making it so the server will not appear in the server list. Repeat offenders can even have the name of there server blacklisted.
this is not something new, if you look at CS: Source server list you can find that almost all of it are fake servers, and if you blacklist the ones that have >32 max players there would be much less servers

Unfortunately, from what I've heard they would have to make a whole new networking system. Not so easy :/

There's an open issue on valve's github repo (iirc gold src) that has been an ongoing for years

Although that server browser outside of the game is stupid, it does come useful if you want to check if the server u play is full before you even launch the game.

cannot believe you said cs2 is an "UpGrAdE" 30 seconds in it may be an update but not an improvement over what we had(1 step forward and 2 steps back), only good thing that came from cs2 is the map creation engine
cs2 = downgrade, how you might ask? sub tick ruined the game 1month ago (peekers advantage anyone???? yes i know its fixed) and its STILL ruining surf, games crashing at pro events, cheaters everywhere without any form of Overwatch, and the rampant server advertisement spam that is worse than csgo ever was, All this so they can peddle more $1k+ skins to delusional blind fanboys
csgo > cs2 any day, there's a reason why half of the pros left cs2 to rot(shroud, tarik) just to name a few. Idk when but i do hope people wake up pull their heads from their asses and breath some fresh air for the first time in months of fart huffing copium

Cs2 community are trash and non existing, like fr link me at least one community sever with a fun mode on like zm escape or other things. There. Is. None.
You're clearly just making it seem bigger thing than it already is example: they're using it for profits and shit.
BUT in reality its to boost the player and server count of CS2 in TOTAL.
Sometimes overthinking isn't the right move.
Steam tracks players count from Steam directly (and it's pretty transparent too).
Iirc the issue is servers don't need a steam account to host a server, hence the massive fave empty server since anyone can do it
